AIDS and multiple sclerosis: neural and mental features.

The presence of mental disorder and cognitive functioning were examined in groups of 20 multiple sclerosis (MS) and homosexual acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) ambulatory male outpatients matched for disability and demographic features. Patients who were somatically ill, had past central nervous system infection or tumours or abused intravenous drugs or alcohol were excluded. The groups significantly differed in mental symptoms and mental disorders (DSM-III classification) seen currently and after the diagnosis of MS or human immunodeficiency virus-1 infection. AIDS patients had pre-e

The Memory Assessment Scale: A Population-based Cognitive Impairment Screening Instrument.

This study re-examined the Memory Assessment Scale (MAS), a brief memory test developed in Hawai'i in 1987, to assess whether it remains a valid and reliable cognitive impairment screening tool in Hawai'i. Patients suspected of having neurocognitive dysfunction were divided into 2 groups (those with and without mild cognitive impairment) based on their results on a battery of neuropsychological tests. No differences in MAS scores were found between patients with and without mild cognitive impairment. Further research with the MAS comparing patients with mild cognitive disorder to healthy contr

Social anxiety disorder treatments: psychosocial therapies.

Controlled clinical trials in social anxiety disorder (SAD) have shown benefit with the use of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapies as well as incorporation of combined therapeutic modalities. This article briefly summarizes the literature on the outcome of group and individual cognitive-behavioral therapy for SAD and concludes that individual therapy is superior to group therapy. Finally, the article discusses comorbidity of depression and SAD and its implications for cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Basic principles for applying cognitive-behavioral therapy to anorexia nervosa.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy continues to be one of the recommended evidenced-based interventions in the treatment of eating disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is clearly of benefit in anorexia and bulimia nervosa, can be learned in a reasonable time, and is guided by manuals on cognitive-behavioral therapy. This article looks at theoretic and clinical interventions in the treatment of anorexia nervosa and suggests strategies related to effective psychotherapeutic treatment that can be used across a continuum of care.

Precision cognitive neurorehabilitation: dose, adaptivity, digital therapeutics and implementation.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive deficits are determinants of long-term disability and socio-professional reintegration across neurological disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite evidence supporting cognitive neurorehabilitation, its implementation remains heterogeneous, and therapeutic parameters are insufficiently defined. AREAS COVERED: The authors reviewed the published literature from PubMed and Google Scholar from 1 January 2015 to 30 June 2026, supplemented by seminal publications. Clinical trials, systematic reviews, met

Microglial TREM2 and cognitive impairment: insights from Alzheimer's disease with implications for spinal cord injury and AI-assisted therapeutics.

Cognitive impairment is a frequent but underrecognized complication of neurodegenerative and traumatic central nervous system disorders. Although research on Alzheimer's disease (AD) revealed that microglial triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) plays a critical role in inhibiting neuroinflammation and improving cognition, its contribution to cognitive impairment following spinal cord injury (SCI) is unclear. Evidence from AD shows that TREM2 drives microglial activation, promotes pathological protein clearance, and disease-associated microglia (DAM) formation. SCI patients

Eye-tracking training improves visuospatial working memory of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder.

Given the close connection between eye movement and frontal lobe functions and some evidence supporting the effect of eye-tracking training on enhancing cognitive performance mediated by the frontal lobe, this study aimed to explore if after-school eye-tracking training can improve the visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and cognitive flexibility performance in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study is a non-randomized cluster trial. Forty children from eight primary schools were selected, half receiving eye-tracking training

Cognitive Impairment in a Child With Anti-N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptor Encephalitis: A Case Report.

Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptor encephalitis is a complex autoimmune inflammatory neurological disorder that presents with epileptic seizures and rapid functional deterioration, including movement disorders and cognitive impairment, especially in young patients. Despite aggressive initial treatment with immune therapy, such as corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin, and plasmapheresis, patients often need intensive rehabilitative therapies for their long-lasting deficits. We report a pediatric case of anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis in Korea that presented with symptoms

Divergent relationship between brain structure and cognitive functioning in patients with prominent negative symptomatology.

Investigating commonalities in underlying pathology of cognitive dysfunction and negative symptoms in schizophrenia is important, as both are core features of the disorder and linked to brain structure abnormalities. We aimed to explore the relationship between cognition, negative symptoms and brain structure in schizophrenia. A total of 225 patients with Schizophrenia spectrum disorder and 283 healthy controls from the Norwegian Thematically Organized Psychosis (TOP) cohort were included in this study. Patients were categorized into four patient subgroups based on severity of negative symptom

Introduction to a theoretical model based on embodied cognition: a pilot study of the diagnosis and treatment of hemiphobia.

PURPOSE: Neurorehabilitation programs have traditionally followed the mind-body dichotomy proposed by Descartes, which resulted in the creation of divergent theoretical frameworks. The purpose of this pilot study is to present a transdisciplinary proposal that integrates human experience via the embodied cognition concept, that is, to explore how the individual relates from their experiential totality. We illustrate this model with a case report: a woman with a physical imbalance caused by stroke, which we diagnose as an experiential disorder and we treat using a transdisciplinary approach. M

Outcome of extremely low birth weight infants: what's new in the third millennium? Neuropsychological profiles at four years.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants, even those not presenting severe neuromotor sequelae, continue to be at risk of developing multiple, complex disorders involving the cognitive, emotional and behavioural domains. Follow-up protocols are able, in the short term, to identify subjects at risk of developing major sequelae, however they fail to identify all children at risk of developing disorders. AIMS: To investigate the cognitive, neuropsychological and behavioural outcomes of a sample of ELBW children at the age of four years in order to identify characteristic profiles.

Anosmia predicts memory impairment in post-COVID-19 syndrome: results of a neuropsychological cohort study.

Recovered COVID-19 patients frequently suffer of cognitive disorders. Several etiopathogenetic mechanisms have been considered for the brain complications in COVID-19 but results are uncertain. Amongst them, an olfactory route to SARS-CoV-2 brain infection might explain cognitive and memory disturbances in post-COVID-19 patients, given the cooccurrence of anosmia and possible underlying limbic involvement. The aims of the study are to investigate cognition of patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome, and to find clinical factors predicting cognitive and memory impairments. 18 patients with post-CO
