The physical and psychosocial impact of a school-based running programme for adolescents with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with disabilities have fewer opportunities to participate in community-based fitness programmes. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a school-based running programme at a local middle school in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, on fitness and quality of life (QoL) in children with physical and cognitive disabilities in a life-skills classroom. METHODS: Nineteen adolescents with diagnosed disabilities including intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome were recruited from three life-skills classrooms to participate in a school-base

Nannies Go Rogue? A Call for Research into Nanny-Induced Elderly Abuse in China.

Older people often face varied and vicious abuse from care workers. Situations are often more pronounced for older people who live with additional cognitive or physical difficulties, such as dementia and disabilities, the prevalence of which has been on the rise in China and elsewhere. Recent discoveries of elderly abuse in China, which span from alarming levels of verbal, physical, psychological, financial, to sexual abuse, are all caused by nannies or "bao mu". Different from Western countries, the word nanny is often used to refer to people who offer caregiving help in residential settings

Human adaptative behavior to Antarctic conditions: A review of physiological aspects.

The Antarctic environment induces adaptive metabolic and neuroendocrine changes associated with survival, as well as increased risks to physical and mental health. Circadian disruption has been observed in Antarctic expeditioners. The main consequences appear in quality of sleep, which can affect physical and cognitive performance. Physiological adaptation to cold is mediated by the norepinephrine and thyroid hormones (T3 and 3,5-T2 metabolite). The observed changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis of expeditioners varied according to temperature, photoperiod, time spent in the

Unveiling teachers' beliefs on visual cognition and learning styles of deaf and hard of hearing students: A Portuguese-Swedish study.

Vision is considered a privileged sensory channel for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students to learn, and, naturally, they recognize themselves as visual learners. This assumption also seems widespread among schoolteachers, which led us to analyse the intersection between teachers' beliefs on deaf and hard of hearing students' academic achievement, visual skills, attentional difficulties, and the perceived importance of image display in class. An online survey was designed to analyse the beliefs of the schoolteachers about the deaf and hard of hearing students learning in educational setting

"Artificial Intelligence" for Pharmacovigilance: Ready for Prime Time?

There is great interest in the application of 'artificial intelligence' (AI) to pharmacovigilance (PV). Although US FDA is broadly exploring the use of AI for PV, we focus on the application of AI to the processing and evaluation of Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) submitted to the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS). We describe a general framework for considering the readiness of AI for PV, followed by some examples of the application of AI to ICSR processing and evaluation in industry and FDA. We conclude that AI can usefully be applied to some aspects of ICSR processing and ev

Neuroimaging Guided Transcranial Electrical Stimulation in Enhancing Surgical Skill Acquisition. Comment on Hung et al. The Efficacy of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Enhancing Surgical Skill Acquisition: A Preliminary Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Brain Sci. 2021, 11, 707.

Surgical skill acquisition may be facilitated with a safe application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). A preliminary meta-analysis of randomized control trials showed that tDCS was associated with significantly better improvement in surgical performance than the sham control; however, meta-analysis does not address the mechanistic understanding. It is known from skill learning studies that the hierarchy of cognitive control shows a rostrocaudal axis in the frontal lobe where a shift from posterior to anterior is postulated to mediate progressively abstract, higher-order contr

White matter plasticity in healthy older adults: The effects of aerobic exercise.

White matter deterioration is associated with cognitive impairment in healthy aging and Alzheimer's disease. It is critical to identify interventions that can slow down white matter deterioration. So far, clinical trials have failed to demonstrate the benefits of aerobic exercise on the adult white matter using diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Here, we report the effects of a 6-month aerobic walking and dance interventions (clinical trial NCT01472744) on white matter integrity in healthy older adults (n = 180, 60-79 years) measured by changes in the ratio of calibrated T1- to T2-weighted

Data-Limited Deep Learning Methods for Mild Cognitive Impairment Classification in Alzheimer's Disease Patients.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is the stage between the declining of normal brain function and the more serious decline of dementia. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the leading forms of dementia. Although MCI does not always lead to AD, an early diagnosis of MCI may be helpful in finding those with early signs of AD. The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) has utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of MCI and AD. MCI can be separated into two types: Early MCI (EMCI) and Late MCI (LMCI). Furthermore, MRI results can be separated into three views of axial,

Effect of Exercise Interventions on Health-Related Quality of Life After Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Exercise interventions have been shown to help physical fitness, walking, and balance after stroke, but data are lacking on whether such interventions lead to improvements in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). In this systematic review and meta-analysis, 30 randomized controlled trials (n=1836 patients) were found from PubMed, OVID MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL, SCOPUS, The Cochrane Library, and TRIP databases when searched from 1966 to February 2020 that examine the effects of exercise interventions on HRQoL after stroke or transient ischemic attack. Exercise interventions resulted in

Effects of Differential Strategies of Emotion Regulation.

Patients suffering from mental disorders, especially anxiety disorders, are often impaired by inadequate emotional reactions. Specific aspects are the insufficient perception of their own emotional states and the use of dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies. Both aspects are interdependent. Thus, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) comprises the development and training of adequate emotion regulation strategies. Traditionally, reappraisal is the most common strategy, but strategies of acceptance are becoming more important in the course of advancing CBT. Indeed, there is evidence that emo

Parents as interventionists: Addressing adolescent substance use.

Much research and attention has focused on addressing the extremes of the adolescent substance use spectrum: either the prevention of substance use prior to its onset or the treatment of those with a substance use disorder (SUD). Little research has looked at adolescents who fall mid-continuum. Adolescents who use substances in this mild-to-moderate range may be efficiently and cost-effectively treated using brief interventions based on cognitive-behavioral (CB) and motivational interviewing (MI) strategies. Accessibility and feasibility of providing interventions may also be enhanced by train

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Pharmacotherapy for the Treatment of Tobacco Use Disorder in Primary Care for Resident Physicians.

INTRODUCTION: Though the prevalence of smoking has decreased, it remains the second leading risk for early death and disability worldwide. At the primary care level, the combined use of behavioral interventions and pharmacotherapy has been shown to be more effective in reduction of smoking. Among behavioral interventions, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) provides a useful framework for helping patients quit smoking. METHODS: This 90-minute workshop was led by two facilitators, a general internist who practices as a primary care physician and a clinical psychologist with content expertise in

Sleep in the United States Military.

The military lifestyle often includes continuous operations whether in training or deployed environments. These stressful environments present unique challenges for service members attempting to achieve consolidated, restorative sleep. The significant mental and physical derangements caused by degraded metabolic, cardiovascular, skeletomuscular, and cognitive health often result from insufficient sleep and/or circadian misalignment. Insufficient sleep and resulting fatigue compromises personal safety, mission success, and even national security. In the long-term, chronic insufficient sleep and

Synthesizing Missing PET from MRI with Cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Networks for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Multi-modal neuroimages (e.g., MRI and PET) have been widely used for diagnosis of brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) by providing complementary information. However, in practice, it is unavoidable to have missing data, i.e., missing PET data for many subjects in the ADNI dataset. A straightforward strategy to tackle this challenge is to simply discard subjects with missing PET, but this will significantly reduce the number of training subjects for learning reliable diagnostic models. On the other hand, since different modalities (i.e., MRI and PET) were acquired from the same sub
