Artificial insemination is a valuable method for facilitating genetic exchange between captive colonies of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and for the maintenance of genetically important remnant populations. However, to reduce potential disease transmission, their semen needs to be screened for venereal diseases caused by organisms such as Chlamydia species. Semen samples from 11 koalas, eight of them with clinical signs of cystitis, were examined for the presence of Chlamydia by an optimised PCR assay. Chlamydia was detected in semen from seven of the 11 animals.

Penicillin and chloromycetin were regarded as the sign of resistance to antibodies of R. leguminosorum USDA2370 and S. xinjiangnesis CCBAU110 respectively. Using the protoplast fusion technique, USDA2370 and CCBAU110 were successfully fused. Fusion hybrid can inoculate in the leguminous of parental strains respectively. There were apparent differences between parents and fusion hybrid in cell morphology, colony and pattern of whole-cell protein. The values of DNA homology between fusion hybrid and USDA2370 and CCBAU110 were 56.6% and 10.2% respectively.

The fast-growing nontuberculous mycobacterial species Mycobacterium chelonae was isolated from six captive South African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) with chronic weight loss and nonhealing ulcerative skin lesions. Three of the M. chelonae isolates were evaluated to confirm the species identification using polymerase chain reaction restriction analysis. Disease associated with M. chelonae is reported mainly in people and in fish. To our knowledge, this is the first report of disease associated with M. chelonae in a colony of captive Xenopus sp.

P. carinii infection in red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus), born and maintained in a laboratory breeding colony, was examined by histopathologic examination postmortem. P. carinii cysts were detected in 6 of 10 red-bellied tamarins examined, by using Grocott's, toluidine blue O and immunostaining with avidin-biotin complex using antisera for rat-, simian-, and human-P. carinii. The results obtained from the present studies imply that P. carinii may be an important pathogen in this species.

A 8-year-old boy presented with scaly plaques of both soles and left palm of 4 year duration. The plaques were well defined scaly, fissured and hyperkeratotic resembling palmo-plantar psoriasis. KOH preparation of the scrapings revealed round, brown, thickwalled bodies with planate division. Grey black, velvety folded colonies were seen in culutre on Sabouraud's dextrose agar. Lacto phenol cotton blue preparation revealed Fonsecaea pedrosoi as the cause of chromoblastomycosis.

We report the case of a 34 year old woman with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis with hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES). Although chemotactic activity of neutrophils was impaired in this patient, neutrophils accumulated in the lungs as assessed by bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) counts. In addition to antibiotics and oxygen therapy, the administration of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) resulted in a remarkable recovery.

We describe a patient with acute lymphocytic leukemia and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis of the brain and spinal cord. Despite treatment with six antituberculous drugs and a steroid medication for 11 months, there was no appreciable clinical or radiological improvement in the patient's condition. Within 5 months of initiating adjunctive therapy with IFN-gamma and granulocyte colony stimulating factors, substantial neurological and radiological improvement was noted. The identification of specific cDNAs by screening filters impregnated with DNA from phage or bacterial colonies is a time-consuming and expensive undertaking. We have developed a rapid and inexpensive method for identifying specific cDNAs that involves hybridization of cDNAs to specific oligonucleotides bound to nylon filters. Using this method, we have identified specific cDNAs for a human B-cell growth factor from different cDNA libraries. The total processing time was 3 days, and 30% of the cDNAs selected by this method were correct.

We report a case of Felty's syndrome in which neutropenia was corrected by a short-term treatment with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF, 5 micrograms/kg/day s.c. for 14 days). Absolute neutrophil counts rose from 0.1 to 2.2 x 10(9)/l and remained > 1.0 x 10(9)/l 8 weeks after discontinuation of the GM-CSF therapy. A flare-up of arthritis and a decrease in platelet counts were observed.

The authors report a case of a 51-year-old woman, living in the extreme west of the Santa Catarina State (South of Brazil, near the Argentine border), who presented a vegetating plaque in the foot, associated with inflammatory nodules in the leg, according to the sporotrichoid form of chromoblastomycosis, with a histologic pattern distinct from the commonly observed. In culture the fungus produced exclusively and repeatidly colonies of a Cladosporium type. More detailed studies of the fungus made by Dante Borelli of Venezuela, proved it to be the type of a new species of Dematiaceous mould.

Actinomadura pelletieri causing white grain mycetoma pedis in a 32 year old farmer is reported. The right foot was swollen, firm painless, non tender and had a number of small nodules breaking down to form sinuses. The seropurulent discharge contained dirty white grains measuring 0.5 to 1 mm, composed of unfragmented filaments of bacterial width. Histologic examination of the biopsy material revealed the characteristic granule of A. Pelletieri and culture yielded typical coral red colonies.

The sensitivity of parenteral inoculation of colony reared male Aedes aegypti and mammalian cell cultures for isolation of Japanese encephalitis virus and dengue virus were compared. The mosquito inoculation technique proved to be more sensitive for the isolation of dengue virus from the sera of febrile patients than did the mammalian cell cultures (Vero and BHK21) employed in these studies. Mosquito inoculation proved to be no more sensitive that the mammalian system for the isolation of Japanese encephalitis virus from field caught female mosquitoes.

Sera from some groups of germfree mice were examined for reactivity against Sendai, reo 3, Theiler's GD VII, ectromelia, and mouse hepatitis virus antigens. Of 51 sera collected in September and October 1976 and in August and September 1977 from one germfree mouse breeding colony, there was no positive reaction against all the antigens tested. Moreover, the attempt of virus isolation from homogenates of various organs including lungs, liver, kidneys, and intestines of 6 germfree mice was unsuccessful.
