Strategies to reach and motivate migrant communities at high risk for TB to participate in a latent tuberculosis infection screening program: a community-engaged, mixed methods study among Eritreans.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, migrant populations with a high tuberculosis (TB) incidence are an important target group for TB prevention. However, there is a lack of insight in effective community-engaged strategies to reach and motivate these migrants to participate in latent TB infection (LTBI) screening and treatment programs. METHODS: In cocreation with Eritrean key figures and TB staff, we designed and executed six strategies to reach and motivate Eritrean communities to participate in LTBI programs, in five regions in the Netherlands. We registered participation in LTBI education and

Perspectives of Vietnamese, Sudanese and South Sudanese immigrants on targeting migrant communities for latent tuberculosis screening and treatment in low-incidence settings: A report on two Victorian community panels.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) elimination strategies in Australia require a focus on groups who are at highest risk of TB infection, such as immigrants from high-burden settings. Understanding attitudes to different strategies for latent TB infection (LTBI) screening and treatment is an important element of justifiable elimination strategies. METHOD: Two community panels were conducted in Melbourne with members of the Vietnamese (n = 11), Sudanese and South Sudanese communities (n = 9). Panellists were provided with expert information about LTBI and different screening and health communicatio

Piloting a participatory, community-based health information system for strengthening community-based health services: findings of a cluster-randomized controlled trial in the slums of Freetown, Sierra Leone.

BACKGROUND: Although community engagement has been promoted as a strategy for health systems strengthening, there is need for more evidence for effectiveness of this approach. We describe an operations research (OR) Study and assessment of one form of community engagement, the development and implementation of a participatory community-based health information system (PCBHIS), in slum communities in Freetown, Sierra Leone. METHODS: A child survival project was implemented in 10 slum communities, which were then randomly allocated to intervention (PCBHIS) and comparison areas. In the 5 PCBHIS

Effectiveness of a community paramedic-led health assessment and education initiative in a seniors' residence building: the Community Health Assessment Program through Emergency Medical Services (CHAP-EMS).

BACKGROUND: Seniors living in subsidized housing have lower income, poorer health, and increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases and falls. Seniors also account for more than one third of calls to Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This study examines the effectiveness of the Community Health Assessment Program through EMS (CHAP-EMS) in reducing blood pressure, diabetes risk, and EMS calls. METHODS: Paramedics on modified duty (e.g. injured) conducted weekly, one-on-one drop-in sessions in a common area of one subsidized senior's apartment building in Hamilton, Ontario. Paramedics assessed c

The impact of a single round of community mass treatment with azithromycin on disease severity and ocular Chlamydia trachomatis load in treatment-naïve trachoma-endemic island communities in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma, a neglected tropical disease, is caused by ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends three annual rounds of community mass drug treatment with azithromycin (MDA) if the prevalence of follicular trachoma in 1-9 year olds (TF1-9) exceeds 10% at district level to achieve an elimination target of district-level TF1-9 below 5% after. To evaluate this strategy in treatment-naïve trachoma-endemic island communities in Guinea Bissau, we conducted a cross-sectional population-based trachoma survey on four islands. The upper ta

Increased use of community medicine distributors and rational use of drugs in children less than five years of age in Uganda caused by integrated community case management of fever.

We compared use of community medicine distributors (CMDs) and drug use under integrated community case management and home-based management strategies in children 6-59 months of age in eastern Uganda. A cross-sectional study with 1,095 children was nested in a cluster randomized trial with integrated community case management (CMDs treating malaria and pneumonia) as the intervention and home-based management (CMDs treating only malaria) as the control. Care-seeking from CMDs was higher in intervention areas (31%) than in control areas (22%; P = 0.01). Prompt and appropriate treatment of malari

The Mexican-American Trial of Community Health workers (MATCH): design and baseline characteristics of a randomized controlled trial testing a culturally tailored community diabetes self-management intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been recommended to reduce diabetes disparities, but few robust trials of this approach have been conducted. Limitations of prior studies include: unspecified a priori outcomes; lack of blinded outcome assessments; high participant attrition rates; and lack of attention to intervention fidelity. These limitations reflect challenges in balancing methodologic rigor with the needs of vulnerable populations. The Mexican-American Trial of Community Health workers (MATCH) was a blinded randomized controlled trial testing CHW efficacy in improving phys

Correlates of body fat distribution. Variation across categories of race, sex, and body mass in the atherosclerosis risk in communities study. The Atherosclerosis Risk in communities (ARIC) Study Investigators.

Though central adiposity is a strong, independent risk factor for cardiovascular and all-cause mortality, relatively little is known about its determinants. To characterize the association of central adiposity with several of its possible determinants, while describing variability in these associations across sex, race, and level of body mass index, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of 15,800 white and African-American men and women ages 45 to 64 years participating in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities baseline survey, 1987 to 1989. After adjustment for other possible determinants, A

Physical performance and DEXA-derived body composition in adults with Parkinson's disease participating in a community-based exercise program and community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder strongly associated with ageing that directly affects mobility and physical function. Although regular exercise is widely recognized as an important strategy to attenuate functional decline, limited evidence has simultaneously examined physical performance and body composition assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in adults with Parkinson's disease participating in community-based exercise programs, particularly in Latin American settings. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted. Adults with PD parti

Calcaneal quantitative ultrasound reference distributions in Tibetan adults aged 50 years and older across five high-altitude communities: A community-based cross-sectional analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS) may support skeletal risk assessment where dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is unavailable. We described sex-specific QUS distributions in older Tibetan adults and examined associations with age, body size, and community-level altitude. METHODS: This community-based cross-sectional analysis included 445 ethnic Tibetan adults aged ≥50 years from five communities at 3,650-4,797 m. Calcaneal QUS was measured using a GE Lunar Achilles EXPII. Group comparisons used parametric or nonparametric methods as appropriate. Sex-specific multivariable line

Design of an implementation research study for a digital omnichannel community engagement and risk communication intervention for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases in India: the OMNIVEC-India study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs), such as malaria, dengue, and lymphatic filariasis, pose significant public health challenges in India, contributing significantly to the nation's morbidity and mortality. In this scenario, digital technology promises scalable, contextual, and user-centric interventions for behavior change. However, systematic and comprehensive community-based digital approaches for VBD prevention in India are limited. This study, therefore, aims to co-design a digital omnichannel Community Engagement and Risk Communication (CERC) intervention for VBDs in collaboratio
