[Radionuclide determination of the state of the venous blood return to the heart in diagnosing pulmonary hypertension].

The method for quantitative evaluation of the transfer of 90mTc-albumin bolus to the heart through the vena cava superior system in scintigraphy on the commonly used gamma chambers with a computer PdP-11/40 is substantiated. It was established that in patients with pulmonary hypertension the average pulmonary circulation time is reduced and the bolus is retained at the level of the trunk of the pulmonary artery, whereas in diminished contractility of the myocardium of the right heart the rate of venous blood return to the heart is reduced and the bolus is retained at the level of the subclavia

Reactivity of Cobalt(III) vs Rhodium(III): Role of Multispin Energy Surfaces in the Regio- and Enantioselective Intermolecular Carboamination.

Asymmetric nonannulative intermolecular carboamination via C-H activation represents a powerful strategy for converting inexpensive alkene feedstocks into value-added products. A comprehensive study was conducted on the reaction mechanism and origin of selectivity with acrylate and N-phenoxyacetamide as substrates, which affords valuable unnatural tyrosine analogues with high regio- and enantioselectivity. By integrating detailed computational studies with available experimental evidence, we demonstrate that the observed selectivity is governed by reduced activation strain energy in conjunctio

Photonics Breakthroughs 2025: Mask-Based Integrated Miniscope for Large-scale Volumetric Imaging.

Mask-based integrated microscopy represents a powerful computational imaging paradigm, enabling 3D imaging over a large field of view within a thin device footprint. This architecture leverages a thin optical mask to encode object information onto a camera sensor placed in close proximity. A major challenge in this field is to maintain high reconstruction quality amid low signal-to-background ratios, while simultaneously reducing computational requirements to allow for larger reconstruction volumes. Here, we describe a significant breakthrough in this area: DeepInMiniscope, a system featuring

Multistate Ferroelectric Memory for in-Memory Differential Computing in C‑Axis‑Oriented HZO‑ZrO2 Films Enabled by Interfacial Engineering.

The von Neumann bottleneck limits energy-efficient computing. While ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (HZO) memories are promising for in-memory computing, achieving high speed, endurance, and reliable multilevel control remains challenging. This work addresses these challenges through interfacial engineering with an ultrathin ZrO2 seed layer. Atomic-resolution microscopy reveals that this interlayer promotes preferential c-axis orientation of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase, aligning the polarization axis with the applied electric field. This enables nanosecond (6 ns) switching, long

Quantum-Driven High-Throughput Docking: Advances in Molecular Scoring and Drug Discovery.

Computational methods are consolidated tools in early drug lead discovery. Among them, high-throughput molecular docking (HTD) is widely used to identify bioactive compounds within large chemical libraries by assessing likely binding modes and assigning docking scores. These methods also inform how hits may be modified to improve protein-ligand interactions, thus guiding lead optimization while reducing time and cost compared with experimental screening. For more than a decade, advances in methodology and computing power have renewed interest in applying quantum mechanics (QM) to macromolecula

Biomechanics of the retina: experimental and clinical perspectives.

The retina is an essential component of the visual system, a delicate neural tissue that converts light signals into electrical impulses and links the visual environment to the brain. Its structure and functional performance depend on multiple layers of interconnected cells and extracellular matrix components that together provide mechanical support. The retina's biomechanical properties, including elasticity, stiffness, and tensile strength, govern how it deforms and recovers under physiological load and mechanical stress. Quantifying these properties is essential for understanding how the re

Optical Neuromorphic Computing Based on Reconfigurable Excitonic Devices.

Optical neuromorphic computing offers promising avenues for real-time image processing and low-power artificial intelligence. Here, we introduce and experimentally validate a fundamentally new computing paradigm that exploits optical exciton dynamics in two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. The type-II band alignment and high permittivity (ε ≈ 19) enable exciton control, achieving an exciton-to-trion ratio of ∼7 under electric field modulation at room temperature. Quasi-linear trion photoluminescence acts as an optical synaptic response, with weights dynamically tuned by substrate vo

Structured interconnectivity optimizes neural geometry for balancing specificity and generalization in object recognition.

Balancing specificity and generalization in object recognition is a significant challenge for biological and artificial visual systems. Here, we investigated how the brain addresses this challenge by examining the relationship between interconnectivity of neural networks, dimensionality of neural space, and levels of abstraction in representing objects, employing combined neurophysiological data from macaques and computational modeling. We found that higher interconnectivity within area TEa of macaques' inferior temporal (IT) cortex was associated with lower dimensionality and greater generali

Aortic Displacement of a Pulmonary Stent: Multidisciplinary Approach to Treat a Rare Complication.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein (PV) stenosis is a rare complication of radiofrequency-based pulmonary vein isolation (PVI). Its therapy consists of PV stenting. CASE SUMMARY: A 67-year-old woman underwent a thoracic computed tomography scan after left PV stenting for stenosis after PVI. The scan revealed the stent missing in the left inferior PV and worsening high-grade stenosis. An abdominal computed tomography scan identified the displaced stent in the aorta, just above the aortoiliac bifurcation. Digital subtraction angiography also revealed moderate stenosis in the right common iliac artery.

Emergency Plug-assisted Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration Using an Optimo 9-Fr Balloon Guiding Catheter: A Case Report.

Gastric variceal rupture requires rapid hemostasis. When an abdominal balloon catheter is unavailable, alternatives are needed. We report emergency plug-assisted retrograde transvenous obliteration performed with a 9-Fr Optimo balloon-guiding catheter in a 59-year-old man with alcoholic cirrhosis and fundal gastric varices. Under balloon occlusion, balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous venography delineated the variceal complex. A 10-mm Amplatzer Vascular Plug II was deployed via the Optimo, followed by stepwise injection of gelatin sponge particles through a high-flow microcatheter. Complet

An automated network-based tool to search for metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer.

The development of computational tools for the systematic prediction of metabolic vulnerabilities of cancer cells constitutes a central question in systems biology. Here, we present gmctool, a freely accessible online tool that allows us to accomplish this task in a simple, efficient and intuitive environment. gmctool exploits the concept of genetic Minimal Cut Sets (gMCSs), a theoretical approach to synthetic lethality based on genome-scale metabolic networks, including a unique database of synthetic lethals computed from Human1, the most recent metabolic reconstruction of human cells. gmctoo

Hierarchical computation of 3D motion across macaque areas MT and FST.

Computing behaviorally relevant representations of three-dimensional (3D) motion from two-dimensional (2D) retinal signals is critical for survival. To ascertain where and how the primate visual system performs this computation, we recorded from the macaque middle temporal (MT) area and its downstream target, the fundus of the superior temporal sulcus (area FST). Area MT is a key site of 2D motion processing, but its role in 3D motion processing is controversial. The functions of FST remain highly underexplored. To distinguish representations of 3D motion from those of 2D retinal motion, we co

Latent tuberculosis and computational biology: A less-talked affair.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a pervasive and devastating air-borne disease caused by the organisms belonging to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex. Currently, it is the global leader in infectious disease-related death in adults. The proclivity of TB to enter the latent state has become a significant impediment to the global effort to eradicate TB. Despite decades of research, latent tuberculosis (LTB) mechanisms remain poorly understood, making it difficult to develop efficient treatment methods. In this review, we seek to shed light on the current understanding of the mechanism of LTB, wit

Biomechanical requirements of meat cutting tasks: A pilot study quantifying tasks sustainability and assistance required at the wrist.

The meat processing industry is particularly affected by distal upper limb musculoskeletal disorders. This pilot study aims at proposing a methodology able to quantify biomechanical requirements of meat cutting tasks at butchers' dominant wrist and, when necessary, at estimating the assistance needed to reach sustainability. Six professional butchers repeatedly cut pieces of pork. Joint angles were recorded using a motion capture system, cutting forces using an instrumented knife. Sustainability was computed by the maximal acceptable effort method. Assistance requirements were computed for iso

Beginnings of exciton condensation in coronene analog of graphene double layer.

Exciton condensation, a Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons into a single quantum state, has recently been achieved in low-dimensional materials including twin layers of graphene and van der Waals heterostructures. Here, we computationally examine the beginnings of exciton condensation in a double layer composed of coronene, a seven-benzene-ring patch of graphene. As a function of interlayer separation, we compute the exciton population in a single coherent quantum state, showing that the population peaks around 1.8 at distances near 2 Å. Visualization reveals interlayer excitons at the sep

Computational study and validation of a novel passive hand tremor attenuator.

Tremors are a prevalent movement disorder due to a nervous system condition that leads to involuntary muscle movements observed in patients. This paper converts the tremorous anatomical human arm model to a single degree of freedom (SDOF) forced vibration problem. The mathematical modelling with Euler-Lagrange's equation is performed for the SDOF human arm model with two different potential vibration absorbers. A computational study is conducted on MATLAB Simulink by MathWorks Inc. (Natick, MA) to compare two absorbers, and the results are verified on the multibody dynamics simulation solution

CLINICAL/METHODICAL ISSUE: Bipedal locomotion means high mechanical stress on the lower extremities and susceptibility to fractures. On the one hand, these can be the result of a one-time traumatic stress in the context of high speed traumas or falls, but can also result from repetitive microtraumas with subsequent stress fractures. STANDARD RADIOLOGICAL METHODS: For all fracture entities and localizations, X‑ray diagnostics is the basic modality. METHODICAL INNOVATIONS: For optimal surgical reconstruction of intra-articular fractures or in complex fracture configurations, computed tomograph

Targeting pathogen metabolism without collateral damage to the host.

The development of drugs that can inactivate disease-causing cells (e.g. cancer cells or parasites) without causing collateral damage to healthy or to host cells is complicated by the fact that many proteins are very similar between organisms. Nevertheless, due to subtle, quantitative differences between the biochemical reaction networks of target cell and host, a drug can limit the flux of the same essential process in one organism more than in another. We identified precise criteria for this 'network-based' drug selectivity, which can serve as an alternative or additive to structural differe
