Severe Congenital Pneumonia Associated With Probable Vertical Transmission of Mycoplasma pneumoniae During a UK Epidemic Surge.

Congenital Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is rare. During the United Kingdom's 2023/2024 MP epidemic, we encountered a fatal case of probable vertically transmitted MP in a preterm infant. This report highlights the need to consider MP during incidence surges, reviews existing literature, and examines whether congenital MP cases cluster around epidemic peaks.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus promotes viral replication via ROS/HIF-1α-mediated glycolysis.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), a highly pathogenic coronavirus, causes recurrent outbreaks of severe enteric disease, posing a significant threat to the global swine industry. The persistent challenge highlights the urgent need for a deeper understanding of host-virus interactions to improve prevention and control strategies. Here, we demonstrated that PEDV infection reprogrammed host metabolism toward aerobic glycolysis, a metabolic shift that not only facilitated viral replication but also established an immunosuppressive microenvironment. PEDV infection activated the hypoxia-induci

Divergent epidemic trajectories of ESBL-producing and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales in French hospitals: a nationwide modelling study.

OBJECTIVES: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) have emerged as a major public health concern despite remaining less frequent than extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E). Conventional surveillance primarily reports annual incidence but provides limited information on epidemic velocity. We compared the epidemic trajectories of ESBL-E and CPE in French hospitals using nationwide surveillance data. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective modelling study using data from the French SPARES surveillance programme (2019-2024). Annual incidence densities

Explaining complex dynamical systems using conditional SHAP analysis with application to multi-variant epidemic dynamics.

Understanding and explaining the dynamics of complex systems is a critical yet challenging task. Such a challenge often arises from high dimensionality, nonlinearity, and randomness, which together make it difficult to study the key drivers influencing system behavior. One illustrative example is infectious disease dynamics. Outbreaks like COVID-19 have major public-health impacts, and timely vaccines and non-pharmaceutical interventions can lessen them. However, COVID-19, influenza, and other pathogens continually generate new strains, so standard low-dimensional compartmental models can be u

Integrating viral kinetics and population spread in a one health framework to explain variant-specific epidemic dynamics.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of modeling frameworks that integrate biological mechanisms with heterogeneous social contact patterns to accurately characterize variant-specific transmission. Motivated by a One Health perspective that connects human infection biology, behavioral dynamics, and environmental transmission factors, we present a data-integrated and mechanistic approach designed to support proactive risk assessment and public-health preparedness. While classical compartmental models offer essential baseline insight, their simplifying assumptions limit the represent

Development of an automated chemiluminescence immunoassay for detection of IgA antibodies against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus spike.

BACKGROUND: Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) causes substantial financial losses on pig farming worldwide. Monitoring PEDV-specific IgA antibodies is essential for assessing vaccine efficacy. In this study, we developed a fully automated chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) for the detection of PEDV IgA antibodies in both serum and milk. RESULTS: This S1-CLIA utilizes recombinant S1 protein-coated magnetic particles (S1-MPs) for antibody capture and an acridinium ester-labeled mouse anti-pig IgA monoclonal antibody (mpIgA-AE) to generate chemiluminescence signals. Optimization of infectious disease intervention measures using reinforcement learning with UK COVID-19 epidemic data.

Globally, the outbreaks of infectious diseases have exerted an extremely profound and severe influence on health security and the economy. During the critical phases of epidemics, devising effective intervention measures poses a significant challenge to both the academic and practical arenas. There is numerous research based on reinforcement learning to optimize intervention measures of infectious diseases. Nevertheless, most of these efforts have been confined within the differential equation based on infectious disease models. Although a limited number of studies have incorporated reinforcem…

Hopf Bifurcation in an Incommensurate Caputo Fractional-Order Computer Virus Epidemic Model with Multiple Time Delays.

Complex nonlinear dynamical systems, often associated with high-entropy time series, have been widely employed to describe and predict intricate dynamic phenomena in real-world systems. Motivated by the need to better understand such complex dynamics in network-based epidemic processes, this paper investigates bifurcation dynamics in a fractional-order extension of the classical Susceptible-Latent-Breaking-Out model for computer virus propagation. The proposed framework incorporates two distinct transmission-related time delays and employs Caputo fractional derivatives of incommensurate orders

Genetic evolution and epidemiological dynamics of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in Guangxi, China, from 2020 to 2023.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) remains a major threat to the global swine industry, leading to severe economic losses due to high mortality and morbidity in piglets. Although significant advances have been made in understanding its genetic features, comprehensive studies on the genetic evolution and epidemiology of PEDV remain limited. In this study, we analyzed PEDV N gene sequences obtained from Guangxi during the period of 2020 to 2023, alongside co-infection patterns involving other enteric viruses, including Porcine Rotavirus (PoRV) and Transmissible Gastroenteritis Virus (TGEV).

Mapping neutralizing epitopes and developing protective chimeric antibodies against porcine epidemic diarrhea virus infection.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes serious economic losses to the global pig industry. Although commercial vaccines remain the main preventive tool, their effectiveness is often reduced due to the emergence of variant strains and insufficient immune protection transferred from sows to piglets through milk. In this study, we developed three neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that target conserved parts of the virus as a potential treatment option. Using hybridoma technology, we immunized BALB/c mice with purified PEDV particles and obtained four neutralizing mAbs-1H9, 1E7, 3A9

HERPUD1 suppresses porcine epidemic diarrhea virus replication by recruiting HRD1 to degrade viral ORF3 protein.

UNLABELLED: The open reading frame 3 (ORF3) gene of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is related to virus pathogenicity. A previous study found that PEDV ORF3 protein localizes in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to trigger the unfolded protein response (UPR). Nevertheless, the precise interactions and underlying mechanisms between ORF3 and UPR pathway-associated proteins remain largely unexplored. In this study, we demonstrate that ORF3 protein is capable of inducing ER stress through activating the transcription factor-6 (ATF6) pathway and PKR-like ER kinase (PERK) pathway. Through yeast

Dynamics of an SEIDW epidemic model for primary amebic meningoencephalitis threshold analysis, bifurcation, and optimal environmental control.

Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), caused by the thermophilic amoeba Naegleria fowleri, is a rare but almost invariably fatal neurological infection. Unlike classical communicable diseases, PAM transmission is exclusively environmentally driven, with no human-to-human transmission. This paper develops and rigorously analyzes a novel susceptible-exposed-infected-dead-water (SEIDW) epidemic model that explicitly couples human infection dynamics with an environmental reservoir of N. fowleri. We establish the fundamental properties of the model including positivity, boundedness, and invaria
