BACKGROUND: Although radiofrequency thermocoagulation is considered as a primary treatment for most patients with trigeminal neuralgia, neuronavigator-guided percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation has been rarely reported. The object of this study was to assess the clinical value of neuronavigator-guided percutaneous radiofrequency thermocoagulation in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.
METHODS: The radiofrequency thermocoagulation was performed in 100 cases of trigeminal neuralgia. The patients were positioned supine or sitting, under Hartel's technique (reported by Sweet and Weps

Two cases of positive identification of burnt bodies by radiographic comparison are reported. They emphasize that antemortem radiographs of the head are an important but sometimes overlooked source of information which can frequently provide useful objective data for comparison purposes. A positive identification can easily be achieved by medical examiners through visual comparison of the antemortem with the postmortem cranial and facial structures, even of bodies severely damaged by fire. In these bodies the radiographs of the skull can graphically depict structures which are often unique to

PURPOSE: We sought to investigate the efficacy of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of Frey and crocodile tears syndromes. Frey syndrome is a common complication after surgical intervention or injury in the region of the parotid gland. Crocodile tears syndrome is unusual and manifests after facial nerve paralysis and other causes such as head trauma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective nonrandomized, nonblinded study. We used botulinum toxin type A for the treatment of 11 patients with gustatory sweating and 2 patients with crocodile tears syndrome.
RESULTS: The follow-up (6 t

Two hundred and thirty sequential parotid tumors seen from March 1985 to 1995 were reviewed for their clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, pathological diagnosis, treatment modalities, and age and sex distribution. An asymptomatic mass was the most common clinical presentation. All of the operations were performed by the same surgical team. Total and superficial parotidectomy was used for the treatment of the lesions and none of the patients underwent limited excision. Retrograde approach in 79 (34.4%) patients and anterograde approach in 151 (65.6%) was used. Eighteen patients with m

Electrical burns of the mouth are relatively common in young children. Early intervention to prevent complications remains controversial. A chart review was conducted of 24 patients with oral commissure burns who were treated at the University of Iowa from 1975 to 1988. All of these patients were treated conservatively without splinting or early surgery. Only one patient underwent oral splinting before receiving care at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. While under our care, no patients suffered significant hemorrhage at eschar separation. Commissuroplasty and/or reconstructive lip

We report a case of a 50-year-old woman with traumatic dissection of the right common carotid artery secondary to attempted suicidal hanging. Initial examination showed marks of strangulation on the neck, facial edema, and multiple conjunctival petechiae accompanied by difficulty in breathing and loss of consciousness. She gradually recovered except for her left upper limb weakness. Rehabilitation, with a diagnosis of left brachial plexus injury, was started. Two years later, she occasionally felt numbness of the left upper extremity. On her second admission, a bruit was heard on the right sid

Unusual inflammatory reactions in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in five patients were explicable by the type of intracranial injury or surgical intervention that they had received or by their basic disease process. Lumbar puncture fluid from a 64-year-old man with multiple facial fractures contained neutrophils, bacteria, Candida sp. and ciliated columnar cells, findings consistent with a basilar skull fracture allowing paranasal sinus contents to enter the subarachnoid space. A 59-year-old man with angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy developed meningitis and suffered a respiratory arrest; a ventri

Active metacarpophalangeal flexion with simultaneous active extension of interphalangeal joints places the fingers in the position in preparation for prehension. This volar flexion of the fingers is due to the action of their intrinsic muscles, and this movement, which is irreplaceable, has been used by the author for the last twenty years as a specific exploratory test of intrinsic finger muscles. It can be investigated as an emergency procedure in cases of ulnar nerve wounds at the elbow or injury to the upper forearm before suture, and clearly demonstrates the presence of an ulnar claw hand

The parotid glands are subject to many pathological disorders other than neoplastic diseases. This large group of disorders is classified for the parotid glands into infectious, metabolic and endocrine, traumatic, congenital, and acquired cystic diseases. The other major salivary glands also can be affected by many of these conditions. In recent years more and more patients have been examined and treated who have had diseases classified according to our concepts. Surgical procedures are now commonly recommended for these groups of patients not only for diagnosis but for treatment as well. The

One type of traumatic injury to which young people especially are vulnerable is tooth avulsion, which may occur as a result of sports activities, automobile accidents, or other mishaps. This article describes a case of a 17-year-old female who suffered an avulsion of her maxillary right central incisor due to an incident in which she fell out of a motor vehicle and onto the pavement. The tooth was recovered by friends, who transported her and the avulsed tooth to a local emergency room. One of the patient's friends achieved replantation of the tooth later that night after leaving the emergency

Condylar is one of the most vulnerable sites to be traumatized in pediatric mandible fracture, while temporomandibular joint ankylosis might be the most severe complication of condylar fracture in children. There exists a long-time controversy on the treatment of condylar fractures in children. Considering the risk of facial nerve injury and a certain probability of absorption or even ankylosis after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of condylar fractures, a series of nonsurgical approaches are preferred in cases without severe malocclusion or shortening of the ramus. Our treatment p

INTRODUCTION: Mandible is the first or the second most fractured bone of facial skeleton. Fractures of the angle account for 23-43% of all mandibular fractures. Soft and hard tissue are affected in a traumatized mandible. Bite forces are an essential factor in masticatory muscles activity. An improved function is a result of improvement in the bite force.
AIM: The objective of this research was to conduct a systematic review of all available literature regarding the masticatory muscles' activity and bite forces in patients with mandibular angle fractures.
METHODS: PubMed, and Google Scholar

Ocular lesions in burns are common and diagnosis is often late, leading to functional impairment including loss of vision to these individuals. A retrospective study was conducted to assess ocular lesions in burns during ICU stay (01/01/2013 to 30/09/2020) in a 20-bed burn ICU in Tunis. Twenty-six cases combining burns and ocular lesions were reviewed. The average age was 26, with a sex-ratio 3.3/1. TBSA was 22±13%. Face was affected in 23 patients, and mechanical ventilation was required in 10 cases. Diagnosis of ocular lesion was noted at 4.5 H (1-33 H) after burn injury. Main clinical signs

Diminished synaptic inhibition in the spinal dorsal horn is a major contributor to pathological pain syndromes of neuropathic or inflammatory origin. Drugs that enhance the activity of dorsal horn α2/α3GABAARs normalize exaggerated nociceptive responses in rodents with neuropathic nerve lesions or peripheral inflammation but lack most of the typical side effects of less specific GABAergic drugs. It is however still unknown whether such drugs also reduce the clinically more relevant conscious perception of pain. Here, we investigated the effects of the α2/α3GABAAR subtype-selective modulator TP

Pancoast's syndrome and subclavian arteritis are rarely caused by Aspergillus sp. . Here we report a case of a 22-yr-old, immunocompetent male who presented with fever, weight loss, right-sided facial anhidrosis and hand weakness of six months duration. Neurological examination confirmed right Horner's syndrome and weakness of small muscles of right hand. Contrast MRI of neck and chest revealed a pleural-based right apical mass abutting subclavian artery and C8-T1 root and multiple enlarged lymph nodes. He developed right hemiataxia due to cerebellar infarct before the planned excision of mass

Emanuel Syndrome (ES; OMIM# 609029) is a rare disorder caused by an unbalanced chromosomal translocation [supernumerary der(22)t(11,22)] and characterized by multiple congenital abnormalities. With limited published cases and low prevalence (1:110 000), detailed ES-associated oro-dental findings have not previously been reported. This is a case report of a 14-year-old boy with ES who presented with congenital cardiac, renal, auditory, musculoskeletal problems, and global developmental delay. The patient was managed with risperidone, melatonin, omeprazole, guanfacine, and oxcarbazepine. Anxiety

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Multiple lower cranial nerve paresis occurring after placement of a fourth ventricle shunt for an isolated fourth ventricle is an uncommon complication in the postoperative period. Of the various etiologies, direct brain stem injury by the catheter and rapid decompression of the fourth ventricle by the shunt causing traction on the cranial nerves have been reported in the literature.
METHODS: We report the case of a 9-year-old girl with an isolated fourth ventricle who developed bilateral facial and multiple lower cranial nerve paresis with bilateral internuclear ophthalmople
