Impact of body mass index and gender on wound complications after lower extremity arterial surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Wound complications (WCs) after lower extremity arterial surgery (LEAS) are common, resulting in readmissions and reinterventions. Whereas diabetes and obesity are known risk factors for WCs, gender-specific variability in body fat distribution (android vs gynoid) may drive differential risks of WCs after LEAS. We analyzed the independent and synergistic effects of gender and body mass index (BMI) on WCs. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected data from a published, randomized, multicenter trial assessing the incidence of WCs (dehiscence, surgical s

Outcome of protease inhibitor substitution with nevirapine in HIV-1 infected children.

BACKGROUND: Protease inhibitors (PIs) have been associated with metabolic complications. There is a trend to switch to simpler therapy to improve these disturbances. We report a case-series describing the effects in metabolic abnormalities in seven HIV-infected children, previously treated with protease inhibitor (PI) after switching to nevirapine. METHODS: Seven children with stable PI-containing regimen and a long lasting HIV-1 RNA < 50 copies/ml were switched to nevirapine. All patients were naïve to non nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. PIs were switched to nevirapine. Preentry

Paradoxical sleep deprivation and sleep recovery: effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity, energy balance and body composition of rats.

Numerous studies indicate that sleep deprivation alters energy expenditure. However, this conclusion is drawn from indirect measurements. In the present study, we investigated alterations of energy expenditure, body composition, blood glucose levels, plasma insulin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone levels immediately after 4 days of sleep deprivation or after 4 days of sleep recovery. Rats were sleep deprived or maintained in a control environment (groups sleep-deprived/deprivation and control/deprivation). One half of these animals were sacrificed at the end of the depriv

Weight loss strategies, stress, and cognitive function: supervised versus unsupervised dieting.

The early stages of dieting to lose weight have been associated with neuro-psychological impairments. Previous work has not elucidated whether these impairments are a function solely of unsupported or supported dieting. Raised cortico-steroid levels have been implicated as a possible causal mechanism. Healthy, overweight, pre-menopausal women were randomised to one of three conditions in which they dieted either as part of a commercially available weight loss group, dieted without any group support or acted as non-dieting controls for 8 weeks. Testing occurred at baseline and at 1, 4 and 8 wee

Gene expression of a truncated and the full-length growth hormone (GH) receptor in subcutaneous fat and skeletal muscle in GH-deficient adults: impact of GH treatment.

In humans at least two GH receptors are significantly expressed. One is the full-length receptor (GHR); the other is a truncated form (GHRtr), that lacks most of the intracellular domain. This receptor may inhibit the action of the full-length receptor. Circulating GH-binding protein (GHBP) is a proteolytically cleaved product from both of these receptors. The clinical relevance of the different receptor types is unknown. We examined the gene expression of GHR and GHRtr in human adipose tissue and skeletal muscle and the influence of GH treatment on this expression. Furthermore, we studied the

Relationship Between Right Ventricular Function and Body Composition in Adolescents and Young Adults.

Objective: This study sought to examine the relationships between right ventricular (RV) parameters and function, and body composition in adolescents and young adult individuals with overweight and obesity. We hypothesized that abnormal body composition is linked to RV dysfunction and subclinical changes in the ventricle. Methods: The study prospectively included 80 young adult individuals, with 55 being overweight or obese and 25 having a normal body weight. We examined differences in RV echocardiographic parameters between these groups and their relationship with body composition parameters.

Obesity exacerbates giardiasis: metabolic, intestinal, and immune response in high-fat diet-fed gerbils.

Obesity has emerged as a critical factor influencing host-pathogen interactions and infection outcomes. However, its role in protozoan infections such as giardiasis remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of a high-calorie, high-fat diet on metabolic, intestinal, and immune parameters in gerbils infected with Giardia lamblia. Our results demonstrated that the high-fat diet significantly increased body weight and induced metabolic disturbances, including dyslipidemia, hepatic fat accumulation, and altered adipokine production. Moreover, Giardia infection exacerbate

Pogostone attenuated high-fat diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in mice through inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome signaling.

Inhibition of inflammasome activation is a potential therapeutic strategy for treating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Pogostone (PO), an active ingredient in Pogostemon cablin, exhibits various pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammation. However, there are no reports of the hepatoprotective effects of PO in NAFLD induced by a high-fat diet (HFD). Molecular biology methods and molecular docking analysis were used to determine the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of PO in NAFLD in vitro and in vivo. Results showed that in vitro, PO reduced lipid deposition, accelerated

Three-dimensional visualization of the total mesorectal excision plane for dissection in rectal cancer surgery and its ability to predict surgical difficulty.

Total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer is often technically challenging. We aimed to develop a method for three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the TME dissection plane and to evaluate its ability to predict surgical difficulty. Sixty-six patients with lower rectal cancer who underwent robot-assisted surgery were retrospectively analyzed. A 3D TME dissection plane image for each case was reconstructed using Ziostation2. Subsequently, a novel index that reflects accessibility to the deep pelvis during TME, namely, the TME difficulty index, was defined and measured. Representative b

Rosae multiflorae fructus regulates the lipogenesis in high-fat diet-induced NAFLD mice model.

PURPOSE: Exercise helps modify the lipid profile in the body, partly through its impact on sterol regulatory element binding protein-1 (SREBP-1) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPAR-γ). Individual differences in response to exercise and genetic variations may influence the response to PA. Therefore, this study explored Rosae multiflorae fructus (RMF) as a supplement candidate that improves exercise capacity and controls non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by suppressing lipogenesis and controlling lipid peroxidation. METHODS: RMF is a natural herbal medicine used in Do

Alleviation of Hepatic Steatosis by Alpha-Defensin Is Associated with Enhanced Lipolysis.

Background and Objectives: The neutrophilic peptide, alpha-defensin, is considered an evolving risk factor intimately linked with lipid mobilization. It was previously linked to augmented liver fibrosis. Here, we assess a potential association between alpha-defensin and fatty liver. Materials and Methods: A cohort of transgenic C57BL/6JDef+/+ male mice that overexpress the human neutrophil-derived alpha-defensin in their polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) were assessed for liver steatosis and fibrosis development. Wild type (C57BL/6JDef.Wt) and transgenic (C57BL/6JDef+/+) mice were maintaine
