Efficacy of a Short-Term Lifestyle Change Intervention in Healthy Young Men: The FASt Randomized Controlled Trial.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of dietary habits and physical activity intervention on lifestyle behavior as a prevention tool supported also by personalized motivational counseling. A two-arm randomized controlled trial was carried out. A sample of 18-22-year-old students was randomly assigned to a four-month intervention based on the Mediterranean diet and moderate physical activity program (N = 66) or to a control group (N = 63). The outcomes were adherence to the Mediterranean diet, physical activity level, and nutrients intake, assessed at enrollment (t0), end of inte

Joint Association of Dietary Protein Intake and Eating Habits with the Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Case-Control Study.

Because the associations between different dietary protein sources and the risks of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are inconsistent, and those of eating habits with GDM have rarely been explored, we aimed to investigate the independent and joint association of major dietary protein sources and eating habits with GDM in a case-control study including 353 GDM cases and 718 controls in China. Dietary protein intake and eating habits prior to GDM diagnosis were collected through questionnaires at 24~28 gestational weeks. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate the independent an

Association between Dietary Patterns and the Risk of Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

(1) Background: Although studies have suggested that dietary interventions may have potential benefits over conventional medical treatments, research on the association between dietary patterns and hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) in pregnant women is scarce. (2) Methods: To explore the relationship between dietary patterns and the risk of HG, a cross-sectional study was conducted in Xi'an, China from April 2021 to September 2022. Dietary intake was assessed by a semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire, and then factor analysis was used to derive dietary patterns. HG was defined as persisten

The role of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in fluid and food intakes in vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro rats.

Eating and drinking co-occur and many of the same mechanisms that control one are involved in the control of the other, making it difficult to isolate specific mechanisms for the control of fluid intake. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a peptide that seems to be involved in the endogenous control of both ingestive behaviors, but we lack a thorough understanding of how and where GLP-1 is acting to control fluid intake. Vasopressin-deficient Brattleboro rats are a model of hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus that have been used extensively for the study of vasopressin actions in behavi

Dietary habits in Japanese patients with bullous pemphigoid: low intake of retinol.

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is an autoimmune subepidermal blistering disease. Dietary habits may modulate the pathogenesis of BP. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated dietary habits in Japanese patients with BP and compared their results to those of age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We also examined the relationship between dietary habits versus IgG anti-BP180NC16A antibody or parameters of BP disease area index (BPDAI); cutaneous blisters/erosions, cutaneous urticaria/erythema, and mucosal blisters/erosions. MATERIALS & METHODS: Dietary habits were assessed by the validated, Brief-type sel

Relationships between executive functions and food rejection dispositions in young children.

This study examined the associations between the two main kinds of food rejection, neophobia and pickiness, and executive functions in young children. Caregivers of children (n = 240) aged 3-6 years completed measures of their children's food neophobia and pickiness. A battery of tests measured children's executive functions and world knowledge. Children with higher levels of neophobia and pickiness had lower cognitive flexibility scores than children with lower levels of food rejection. Moreover, the association between food neophobia and cognitive flexibility was stronger than the associatio

Mediating Effects of Intimacy Between Body Talk and Girls' Body Dissatisfaction: The Forgotten Sibling Relationship.

Teasing and pressure from family members influences the development of body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction is a common experience for girls and can lead to eating disorders. However, most body image disturbance research to date neglects the possible influence of siblings. In light of this, the present study investigated the associations between sibling negative appearance-based talk, intimacy, and body dissatisfaction. The sample consisted of 113 mostly White, female adolescents, whose ages ranged from 12 to 19 years with a mean age of 14.85 (SD = 1.62). This study first examined direct

Different Variation of Intra-familial Body Mass Index subjected to Covid-19 Lockdown.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown has represented an inedited model of increased metabolic risk in all age groups, due to negative changes in dietary habits, physical activity, lifestyle. These effects have been generally explored at a population level in distinct age groups. Potential intra-familial, specific effects in adults and children sharing the same socio-economic, cultural level and living habits have been scarcely explored. We aimed to characterize changes of anthropometric indices in parents and in their children during COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS: A

From the need to the knowledge. Feeding emotions and thoughts: Assessing emotion regulation strategies in food tribes.

Some people choose to follow a certain dietary habit because they are guided by strong beliefs, but also to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Food tribes are defined as social groups sharing common values and beliefs that underlie food and lifestyle choices. The current study aimed to investigate potential differences in emotion regulation between specific food tribes, and when comparing food tribes to people who conversely do not follow a dietary habit. Specifically, we examined the presence of rumination, psychological inflexibility, and emotional contagion as components of emotion dysregulation.

Dietary and Nutrient Intake, Eating Habits, and Its Association with Maternal Gestational Weight Gain and Offspring's Birth Weight in Pregnant Adolescents.

Pregnant adolescents' diet and eating habits are inadequate; however, their association with gestational weight gain (GWG) is uncertain. We aimed to analyze whether there is an association between dietary and nutrient intake and eating habits with GWG among pregnant adolescents and their offspring's birth weight. A longitudinal study was performed with 530 participants. We assessed GWG and applied several tools, such as a food frequency questionnaire and 24-h recall, to obtain dietary and nutrient intake and eating habits. The birth weight of adolescents' offspring was registered. Later, we pe

Human behavior determinants of exposure to Anopheles vectors of malaria in Sumba, Indonesia.

Malaria vector control interventions in Sumba, Indonesia, have not been able to eliminate malaria. Human drivers of exposure to Anopheles bites were investigated as part of a larger clinical trial evaluating the impact of a spatial repellent product on malaria incidence. Human behavioral observations (HBOs) evaluating temporal and spatial presence, sleeping behaviors, and insecticide treated net (ITN) use, were collected parallel to entomological collections-indoor and outdoor human landing catches (HLCs), and house hold surveys. Data demonstrates that mosquito access to humans, enabled by str

The relationship between meal regularity with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in adults.

BACKGROUND: The irregular meal pattern and meal-skipping might be related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), however, findings of previous investigations are contradictory. We aimed to examine the relation of meal regularity with IBS in Iranian adult population. METHODS: Data on 4599 adults who worked in 50 different health centers were used in this cross-sectional study. Dietary habits were measured using a pretested questionnaire. IBS identification was performed through the use of a modified version of Rome III questionnaire. RESULTS: IBS was prevalent among 18.6% of men and 24.1% of wome

Sex difference feeding behaviour of NOD SCID mice in a pharmacological model of type 1 diabetes.

This study aimed to assess the sex differences in the feeding behaviour of non-obese diabetic severe combined immunodeficient (NOD SCID) mice in a pharmacological model of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1Dm). In our study, we chose NOD SCID mice of both sexes and assessed their feeding behaviour, body weight, body fat and water content under identical experimental conditions and diets. After 1 month of diabetes mellitus in mice in the experimental group, males and females did not show any increase in body weight, and they weighed significantly less than the control group. However, compared with th

Identifying Predictors of Non-Suicidal Self-Injuries in Individuals with Eating Disorders.

PURPOSE: Nearly one third of all patients with an eating disorder (ED) present with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Although it is necessary to pay attention clinically to NSSI in ED patients due to an increased suicidal risk, there are limited data on potential predictors of NSSI in ED. We conducted this study to uncover predictors of NSSI in ED. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1355 ED patients who visited an ED clinic was evaluated through structured interviews by psychiatrists. The demographic and clinical characteristics of ED patients with NSSI (NSSI group) and ED patients without NSS

A minimal 3D model of mosquito flight behaviour around the human baited bed net.

BACKGROUND: Advances in digitized video-tracking and behavioural analysis have enabled accurate recording and quantification of mosquito flight and host-seeking behaviours, facilitating development of individual (agent) based models at much finer spatial scales than previously possible. METHODS: Quantified behavioural parameters were used to create a novel virtual testing model, capable of accurately simulating indoor flight behaviour by a virtual population of host-seeking mosquitoes as they interact with and respond to simulated stimuli from a human-occupied bed net. The model is described,

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Eating Disorders.

Research findings strongly suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy for the eating disorders (CBT-ED) is more effective than other treatments for bulimia nervosa (BN) and for binge eating disorder (BED), although interpersonal psychotherapy appears to be equally effective for BED. Evidence for the effectiveness of CBT-ED for the persistent (adult) form of anorexia nervosa (AN) is insufficient at present and is essentially absent for AN in adolescents except for some evidence from uncontrolled trials. This article begins with an overview of the early studies in the development of CBT-ED that s

Relationship between Negative Running Addiction and Eating Disorder Patterns in Runners.

UNLABELLED: Current studies show an increase in the risk of eating disorders in runners. Since it is known that abusive exercise can be both a cause and a consequence of such developments, the main objective of the present study was to examine the risk and possible relationships between negative running addiction (NRA), as measured by the reduced and validated SAS-40 scale, and the tendency to be a compulsive eater (measured by YFAS 2.0), anorexia nervosa (AN), and/or bulimia nervosa (BN) (measured by EAT-40). This study highlights the novelty of researching the level of influence of NRA on ea

Child feeding practices in children with Down syndrome in relationship to ethnicity and BMI.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit higher overweight and obesity rates than their typically developing peers, although it is unknown whether parent feeding practices for children with DS are associated with child weight status or parental and demographic factors, especially in the Hispanic and Latino populations. A prospective study of 68 children with DS from 2 to 7 years of age, who received care at a single, large, pediatric academic hospital was conducted to evaluate parent child feeding practices. Parents completed the Child Feeding Questionnaire+ (CFQ+) assessing seven primary fact

Total estimated usual nutrient intake and nutrient status biomarkers in women of childbearing age and women of menopausal age.

BACKGROUND: Women of childbearing age (WCBA) and women of menopausal age (WMENO) have distinct nutritional needs. Understanding nutrient intake and status in these life stages is critical for tailoring dietary recommendations. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to evaluate total estimated usual nutrient intakes from food and food plus supplements and to compare these to established recommendations for WCBA and WMENO life stages and examine associations between self-reported estimated usual intakes and nutrient status biomarkers. METHODS: Twenty-four-hour dietary recall data from 2
