The Impact of Rolling Blackouts on Environmental Health in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Rolling blackouts (planned power outages) are common in low- and middle-income countries, including South Africa. Recently, South Africa has experienced longer and more frequent rolling blackouts owing to its reliance on an aging electricity grid, among other challenges. During rolling blackouts, parts of the electricity grid are shut down, and the loss of power in homes, businesses, and industries across vast areas leads to a breakdown of key amenities required for environmental health. OBJECTIVES: This commentary contextualizes the existing consequences and potential implication

Outbreak of the novel Cryptosporidium parvum IIγA11 linked to salad bars in Sweden, December 2023.

We report a foodborne outbreak of the previously undetected Cryptosporidium parvum gp60 subtype IIγA11. In December 2023, notifications of cryptosporidiosis cases increased in Sweden, prompting the initiation of a national outbreak investigation, and a case-control study was performed to identify the source. We identified 60 cases between 15 December 2023 and 1 January 2024. The median age was 44 years (range: 16-81), and 73% were women. Controls were recruited from a national random pool; frequency was matched by age group and sex. Compared to controls, cases were more likely to have consumed

Isolation of Listeria monocytogenes from poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) infesting a backyard chicken farm in Greece.

The poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, is arguably the most harmful, ubiquitous haematophagous ectoparasite infesting egg-laying hens. PRM is a vector of various microorganisms, with some being important for food microbiology and public health. The present study aimed to investigate the presence of specific pathogens, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp., carried by PRM infesting a chicken farm in Greece. Mites were caught using cardboard traps (Avivet), and 100 unwashed PRM were homogenized and used for microbiological cultures. Microbiological cultures wer

Trace metals in estuarine organisms from a port region in southern Brazil: consumption risk to the local population.

Metal contamination is a threat to estuarine environments. They can accumulate in the food chain and cause toxic effects on aquatic organisms and human health. This study evaluated the concentrations of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in aquatic organisms of Antonina Bay (southern Brazil) to analyze whether the metal concentrations were in accordance with Brazilian food legislation and estimate the human risk of local seafood consumption. All analyzed organisms (Centropomus parallelus, Mugil curema, Genidens genidens, Crassostrea brasiliana, and Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) showed traces of m

Salmonella persistence in soil depends on reciprocal interactions with indigenous microorganisms.

Fresh fruits and vegetables have numerous benefits to human health. Unfortunately, their consumption is increasingly associated with food-borne diseases, Salmonella enterica being their most frequent cause in Europe. Agricultural soils were postulated as reservoir of human pathogens, contributing to the contamination of crops during the growing period. Since the competition with the indigenous soil microbiota for colonization sites plays a major role in the success of invading species, we hypothesized that reduced diversity will enhance the chance of Salmonella to successfully establish in agr

In vitro selection of anti-gliadin single-domain antibodies from a naïve library for cDNA-display mediated immuno-PCR.

Gluten intolerance, or adverse intestinal reactions to gluten, is a fairly common problem among certain groups of people. Celiac disease is the most severe form of gluten intolerance, which can lead to permanent damage in the digestive system. Since lifelong avoidance of gluten is the only available treatment, development of reliable techniques to identify gluten contamination in food is important. Gliadin, a component of gluten, is known to play a major role in gluten toxicity. In this study, cDNA display method was used to select specific single-domain antibodies against toxic gliadin from a

Dual-channel ITO-microfluidic electrochemical immunosensor for simultaneous detection of two mycotoxins.

Due to the widely occurring co-contamination of mycotoxins in raw food materials, simultaneous monitoring of multiple mycotoxins is needed. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of an electrochemical immunosensor for simultaneous detection of two mycotoxins, fumonisin B1 (FB1) and deoxynivalenol (DON), in a single test. A dual-channel three-electrode electrochemical sensor pattern was etched on a transparent indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass via photolithography and was integrated with capillary-driven polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic channel. The two working electrodes were f

Purification and identification of an aflatoxin B1 degradation enzyme from Pantoea sp. T6.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a secondary metabolite produced by Aspergillus flavus and other fungi. Soil, crops, food, feed, etc. were susceptible to aflatoxin B1 contamination, which caused adverse economic and health consequences. It is necessary to search for microorganisms or microbial enzymes that can degrade AFB1. The degradation activity of AFB1 by cell-free supernatant (68.30%) of isolate Pantoea sp. T6 was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than viable bacterial cells (4.87%) and intracellular cell extracts (3.68%). The supernatant's AFB1 degradation activity was reduced from 68.30% to 5.33% i

Whole genome sequencing reveals widespread distribution of typhoidal toxin genes and VirB/D4 plasmids in bovine-associated nontyphoidal Salmonella.

Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a common pathogen in food-producing animals and a public health concern worldwide. Various NTS serovars may be present in apparently healthy animals. This could result in carcass contamination during the slaughter process leading to human exposure. While most genomic research has focused on Salmonella pathogenesis, little is known on the factors associated with subclinical infections and environmental persistence. We report here the widespread distribution of typhoidal toxin genes (i. e. the cdtB islet, hlyE, taiA), among NTS strains from a beef slaughter opera

Determination of Oxytetracycline and 4-Epi-Oxytetracycline Residues in Feathers and Edible Tissues of Broiler Chickens Using Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Tandem Mass Spectrometry.

Antibiotics have been widely used in poultry production for the treatment of bacterial diseases. However, drug residues can remain in products derived from animals after the cessation of the drug therapies. Feathers, in particular, have shown an affinity for antibiotics such as tetracycline, suggesting the persistence of these drugs in nonedible tissue. After the birds are slaughtered, feathers are ground into feather meals, which are used as organic fertilizer or an ingredient in animal diets, thereby entering into the food chain and becoming a potential risk for public health. To evaluate th

Outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis phage type 1B associated with frozen pre-cooked chicken cubes, Finland 2012.

In August to October 2012, a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis phase type (PT) 1B with 53 cases occurred in Finland. Hypothesis generating interviews pointed toward ready-to-eat chicken salad from a Finnish company and at the same time Estonian authorities informed of a S. enteritidis PT 1B outbreak linked to chicken wrap prepared at an Estonian restaurant. We found that chicken salad was associated with the infection (odds ratio (OR) 16·1, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·7-148·7 for consumption and OR 17·5. 95% CI 4·0-76·0 for purchase). The frozen pre-cooked chicken cubes used in

Antimicrobial susceptibility in thermophilic Campylobacter species isolated from pigs and chickens in South Africa.

Campylobacter jejuni is one of the leading causes of sporadic food-borne bacterial disease in humans. In intensive poultry and pig rearing systems the use of oral antibiotics is essential to maintain health. Consequently, there is a high risk for the thermophilic Campylobacter jejuni and C. coli resident in the intestinal tract of food animals to develop resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Contamination of meat or eggs with pathogenic strains of resistant Campylobacter could, therefore, result in a form of campylobacteriosis in humans that is difficult to treat. The aim of this investigat

Targeted protein degradation by Salmonella under phagosome-mimicking culture conditions investigated using comparative peptidomics.

The pathogen Salmonella enterica is known to cause both food poisoning and typhoid fever. Because of the emergence of antibiotic-resistant isolates and the threat of bioterrorism (e.g. contamination of the food supply), there is a growing need to study this bacterium. In this investigation, comparative peptidomics was used to study S. enterica serovar Typhimurium cultured in either a rich medium or in an acidic, low magnesium, and minimal nutrient medium designed to roughly mimic the macrophage phagosomal environment (within which Salmonella are known to survive). Native peptides from cleared

The year of the Salmonella seekers--1977.

In 1977 two major outbreaks of salmonella infection originated in Victoria. The first of these, involving Salmonella Bredeney, continued over some seven months and was traced to contamination of powdered milk-based infant formulae during manufacture. This caused cases of gastroenteritis among young children throughout Australia. Another incident led to the discovery that salmonella serovars were colonising not one, but a number of dairy factories through the State. The second outbreak was of typhoid, stemming from a carrier working in a sandwich bar, and occurred during the course of the first

Consumer responses to upcycled foods in sustainable diets in Korea: a protection motivation theory-based cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine how perceived risks associated with upcycled foods shape consumer decision-making through the lens of Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). Although upcycled foods have gained increasing attention as a promising approach to reducing food waste and supporting sustainable diets, consumer acceptance remains uncertain due to concerns about safety, quality, unfamiliarity, and perceived contamination. Specifically, this study investigates the cognitive mechanisms by which threat and coping appraisals influence protection motivation and purchase intention. METHOD
