Effects of D 600, papaverine and KCN on sustained contracture induced by 20 mM KCl in a Na+-free sucrose- or Tris-substituted solution were investigated in the taenia coli of guinea pigs. D 600 (10(-5) M) and papaverine (10(-4) M), added after 40 min incubation in the 20 mM KCl sucrose solution, relaxed the muscle by 88.2 +/- 8.0% (mean +/- S.E., n = 4) and 78.8 +/- 6.3% (n = 4), respectively. Six discrete protease activities were recovered from the supernatant broth of Legionella pneumophila cultures by ion-exchange chromatography. One of these demonstrated in vitro activity against collagen, casein and gelatin. When administered into the lungs of guinea-pigs this protease elicited lesions which were pathologically similar to those seen in clinical and experimentally induced Legionnaires' disease.

The effect of phentolamine on the neurogenic contractile response in vasa deferentia from rat and guinea pig was studied during Wallerian degeneration. This response was also investigated after partial denervation (surgery or chemical sympathectomy by guanethidine treatment) in vasa deferentia from guinea pig. Germ-free guinea pigs were infected with a virulent strain of Leptospira interrogans serotype icterohaemorrhagiae to evaluate the possible role of endotoxin of intestinal bacteria in the development of hemorrhages and hepatic and renal failure. Clinical manifestations, necropsy findings and histological lesions were similar to those seen in control animals. In the second part of the experiment, endotoxin was not detected by the Limulus test in the blood of ten guinea pigs during the five day course of leptospirosis.

Exposure of sensitized guinea pig tracheal rings or human bronchial strips to specific antigen in vitro resulted in a rapidly developing, prolonged contraction that was resistant to washing. Treatment of the tissue with diphenhydramine, a histamine H1 antagonist, before antigen delayed the onset and decreased the amplitude of the initial phase of the contraction but did not reduce the duration. In the present investigation the differences in the capacity of thymocytes (Th) and thymus-related peripheral blood lymphocytes (TBL) of the guinea-pig to form spontaneous rosettes with rabbit erythrocytes (RRBC) were further evaluated. Cytochalasin B (CB) inhibited TBL rosette formation but was largely ineffective with respect to Th.
