OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vitro activity of the fourth-generation cephalosporin cefpirome in comparison to that of ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime and imipenem in a multicenter study involving nine hospitals from six cities (four States).

BACKGROUND: Invasive fusariosis (IF) is a rare but often fatal mold infection in immunocompromised patients, particularly after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Despite antifungal prophylaxis and treatment, mortality remains high.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all allogeneic HSCT recipients for hematological malignancies at our center (2010-2024) and identified proven IF cases. Species identification was based on multigene sequencing, and antifungal susceptibility testing was performed.

Hepatic complications associated with cholestasis occur frequently in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. Since bile acid seems to be a sensitive indicator of beginning cholestasis, the authors monitored total serum bile acid levels in addition to the standard liver function tests in 23 recipients of allogeneic transplants between June 1999 and September 2000. The observations suggest that bile acid is an early and sensitive marker of hepatic GvHD but not as specific as bilirubin. OBJECTIVE: The antenatal and intrapartum management of women with autoimmune thrombocytopenia is controversial. The current approach emphasizes an effort to identify maternal characteristics predictive of severe neonatal thrombocytopenia or to measure fetal platelet counts and perform cesarean section in patients considered to be at risk for neonatal intracranial hemorrhage. Six patients having different subtypes of von Willebrand's disease were followed up during eight complete pregnancies. Two additional pregnancies terminated in spontaneous abortions. Five pregnancies ended in cesarean section either because of obstetric problems (three) or electively (two) to avoid infant bleeding.
