AIM: Hepatic steatosis is one of the factors limiting the virological response to interferon-based antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis C (CH-C) patients infected with genotype 1, while contradictory results have been reported for genotype 2. We aimed to clarify the effect of hepatic steatosis on therapeutic outcome and cumulative positivity of serum HCV RNA in CH-C patients infected with genotype 2 treated by peginterferon (PEG-IFN)α2b and ribavirin (RBV) combination therapy.
METHODS: A total of 74 treatment-naïve non-cirrhotic CH-C patients infected with genotype 2 who received PEG-IFNα2…

Coinfection of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus presents great difficulty in treatment procedures, especially in terms of prediction of the response to the direct-acting antiviral therapy. In view of this, developing adequate prediction models would play a vital role in ensuring better personalization and effectiveness in terms of treatment. The objective of this paper is to develop and validate prediction models for the identification of patients' responses to direct-acting antiviral therapy in chronic HBV/HCV coinfected patients following treatment completion. This retrospective clini…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication generates a double-stranded linear DNA (dslDNA) byproduct. This dslDNA can undergo intermolecular and intramolecular nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) recombination, resulting in viral integration and dslDNA-derived covalently closed circular DNAs (dsl-cccDNAs), respectively. The insertions and deletions (INDELs) at the end-joining site have been used to differentiate dsl-cccDNA from the authentic cccDNA. The prevalence and characteristics of dsl-cccDNA in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients remain unclear.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: HBV-targe…

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroclearance is considered a functional cure in chronic hepatitis B (CHB), yet the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may persist. This study aimed to evaluate HCC incidence and identify risk factors after HBsAg seroclearance.
METHODS: This retrospective single-center cohort included 259 CHB patients who achieved HBsAg seroclearance between 2013 and 2023. Patients with pre-existing HCC were excluded. During follow-up, 22 patients developed HCC. Clinical, demographic, and laboratory variables were analyzed. Independent risk factors were dete…
