Identification of human remains in case of transgender individuals in forensic anthropology: a systematic review.

During anthropological analysis of human skeletal remains, sex assessment is a key step in forensic identification of individuals. For transgender individuals, complications can arise during the estimation of biological sex, as physical characteristics may not correspond with the documented gender recorded at registration of the missing person with authorities. In this systematic review, we analyzed the current literature focusing on methods employed for state-of-the-art identification of skeletal remains of transgender and gender-diverse individuals in forensic anthropology, including the eff

Individual differences in fear memory expression engage distinct functional brain networks.

Fearful stimuli elicit a mix of active (e.g., evasion) and passive (e.g., freezing) behaviors in a wide range of species, including zebrafish (Danio rerio). However, it is not clear if individual differences in fear responses exist and, if so, what parts of the brain may underlie such differences. To probe these questions, we developed a contextual fear conditioning paradigm for zebrafish that uses conspecific alarm substance (CAS) as an unconditioned stimulus where fish associate CAS administration with a specific tank. To identify individual differences, we collected behavioral responses fro

Optimizing the mirror illusion during mirror therapy: evidence from unimpaired individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Mirror therapy has demonstrated functional benefits for patients recovering from hemiparetic stroke, with its effectiveness primarily attributed to the induction of a compelling visual illusion that engages sensorimotor networks. Although previous research has identified various intervention parameters influencing therapeutic outcomes, a comprehensive understanding of their effects on the illusory experience remains limited. This study investigated how four critical parameters-mirror size (large vs. small), object manipulation (present vs. absent), task complexity (simple vs. com

Individualization of Testicular Cells for Single-Cell Subcellular Immunocytochemistry and Cell Culture Applications.

The use of tissue dissociations to produce single-cell suspensions is foundational to a long history of research applications. More recently, increasingly sensitive and complex down-stream single-cell assays and tissue culture applications are being developed that require refined tissue-specific dissociation protocols that produce consistent, high-quality, single-cell populations. To dissociate tissues, mechanical, enzymatic, and chemical methods are optimized in a tissue-specific manor dependent largely on the histomorphological arrangement of extracellular matrix and intercellular junctions.

Genome-wide identification and analysis of recurring patterns of epigenetic variation across individuals.

Epigenetic mapping studies across individuals have identified many positions of epigenetic variation across the human genome. However the relationships between these positions, and in particular global patterns that recur in many regions of the genome, remains understudied. In this study, we use a stacked chromatin state model to systematically learn global patterns of epigenetic variation across individuals and annotate the human genome based on them. We apply this framework to histone modification data across individuals in lymphoblastoid cell lines and across autism spectrum disorder cases

Femtosecond Single-Particle Spectroscopy of Exciton Diffusion in Individual Copper Phthalocyanine Nanofibers.

Exciton diffusion in individual copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) nanofibers of β- and η-crystalline phases was investigated using femtosecond single-particle spectroscopy. The exciton diffusion coefficient (D) ranged from 1.6 × 10-5 to 0.079 cm2 s-1 for β-CuPc and from 0.040 to 0.48 cm2 s-1 for η-CuPc, with the η phase showing an average D (0.16 cm2 s-1) nearly ten times larger than that of the β phase (0.020 cm2 s-1). The enhanced transport in η-CuPc is attributed to a stronger excitonic coupling and greater intermolecular overlap. The broad distributions of D within each phase strongly correlate

Stratifying risk of Alzheimer's disease in healthy middle-aged individuals with machine learning.

Alzheimer's disease has a prolonged asymptomatic phase during which pathological changes accumulate before clinical symptoms emerge. This study aimed to stratify the risk of clinical disease to inform future disease-modifying treatments. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis from participants in the Emory Healthy Brain Study was used to classify individuals based on amyloid beta 42 (Aβ42), total tau (tTau) and phosphorylated tau (pTau) levels. Cognitively normal (CN), biomarker-positive (CN)/BM+individuals were identified using a tTau: Aβ42 ratio > 0.24, determined by Gaussian mixture models. CN/BM+ in

Robust longitudinal neuropsychological norms in Spanish individuals with nonpathological Alzheimer's disease biomarkers.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological norms serve to identify cognitive impairment and monitor neurodegenerative disease progression. However, longitudinal data are limited, and conventional approaches do not account for biomarkers to exclude underlying Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, reducing sensitivity to detect subtle cognitive decline in preclinical AD. To address these limitations, this research provides robust longitudinal neuropsychological norms derived from Spanish individuals with nonpathological levels of AD biomarkers. METHOD: We analyzed 3-year follow-up data from 350 cognitively un

In vivo estimation of motor unit intrinsic properties in individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have experienced spinal cord injury (SCI) may exhibit various muscle-related neurophysiological adaptations, including alterations in motor unit (MU) size and firing behavior. However, due to the technical challenges of in vivo measurement, our understanding of the alterations in the electrophysiological parameters of these MUs remains limited. This study proposed an integrated approach using high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) decomposition and motor neuron (MN) modelling to estimate the intrinsic properties of MUs in vivo and investigated alterations of these p

Individual differences in intolerance of uncertainty is primarily linked to the structure of inferior frontal regions.

Increased intolerance of uncertainty (IU), or distress felt when encountering situations with unknown outcomes, occurs transdiagnostically across various forms of psychopathology and is targeted in therapeutic intervention. Increased intolerance of uncertainty shows overlap with symptoms of internalizing disorders, such as depression and anxiety, including negative affect and anxious apprehension (worry). While neuroanatomical correlates of IU have been reported, previous investigations have not disentangled the specific neural substrates of IU above and beyond any overlapping relationships wi

Screening for a "trifecta" of executive function patterns in a large cohort of individuals with Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined three neurocognitive patterns or "clinical pearls" historically viewed as evidence for executive dysfunction in Parkinson disease (PD): 1) letter < category fluency; 2) word list < story delayed recall; 3) word list delayed recall < recognition. The association between intraindividual magnitudes of each neuropsychological pattern and individual performance on traditional executive function tests was examined. METHODS: A clinical sample of 772 individuals with PD underwent neuropsychological testing including tests of verbal fluency, word list/story recall, recog

A multifaceted hybrid ES-robotic device for gait training in individuals with neurological disorders.

The integration of robotics and Electrical Stimulation (ES) in neurorehabilitation leverages robotics' precise task execution alongside ES-induced motor learning, muscle conditioning, and cardiovascular benefits. We propose a hybrid system for overground gait training, combining neuromuscular ES and a motorized exoskeleton. Different combination modalities are proposed: ES-motor cooperation for the swinging knee, synchronized but independent ES and motor assistance for hip movements and for the knee during stance, and ES-only for the non-actuated ankle. Twelve non-disabled subjects and eleven

Stable individualized brain computing model informed by spatiotemporal co-activity patterns.

Accurate simulation of the brain's intrinsic dynamic activity is essential for understanding human cognition and behavior and developing personalized brain disease therapies. Traditional neurodynamics models depend on structural connectivity to explain the emergence of functional connectivity (FC). However, achieving high-fidelity simulations at the individual level remains challenging, as the models fail to fully capture the brain information. To address these challenges, we introduce the Stable Individualized Brain Computing Model (SI-BCM), a data-driven reverse engineering framework designe
