A new urinary catheter-related quality of life instrument for adults.

AIMS: To develop and assess the measurement properties of a catheter-related quality of life (C-IQoL) instrument designed to support research with persons using long-term urinary catheter users who use indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheters permanently. METHODS: Testing was conducted in two small studies for psychometric qualities of reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) and factor analysis. The initial instrument, which was modified after each study, was based on an International Continence Society (ICS) validated generic incontinence quality of life tool. ICS guidelines we

From a distance: implications of spontaneous self-distancing for adaptive self-reflection.

Although recent experimental work indicates that self-distancing facilitates adaptive self-reflection, it remains unclear (a) whether spontaneous self-distancing leads to similar adaptive outcomes, (b) how spontaneous self-distancing relates to avoidance, and (c) how this strategy impacts interpersonal behavior. Three studies examined these issues demonstrating that the more participants spontaneously self-distanced while reflecting on negative memories, the less emotional (Studies 1-3) and cardiovascular (Study 2) reactivity they displayed in the short term. Spontaneous self-distancing was al

How will family physicians care for the patient in the context of family and community?

Difficulties caring for patients in the context of family and community stem from problems of power and vulnerability. Patients are disempowered in relation to physicians and to the medical care system. Physicians are disempowered in their ability to provide comprehensive relationship-centered care to individuals and families because of economic constraints on medical care and limits on continuity of care. Individual patients are also vulnerable to abuses of power within their families because of physical and sexual abuse; the recognition of such abuses and appropriate interventions for them r

Secondary traumatic stress, psychological distress, sharing of traumatic reminiscences, and marital quality among spouses of Holocaust child survivors.

In this study, we examined the issue of secondary traumatic stress (STS) among spouses of Holocaust survivors who were children during the World War II. STS is defined as comprising the same components as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), except that the person evidencing the symptoms has not actually been exposed to the traumatic event(s), but has developed them as a result of caring for someone with PTSD. Participants were 90 couples who completed self-report questionnaires regarding posttraumatic symptoms, psychological distress, and marital quality. The results showed that about one-th

Disorders of Mood After Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) of any severity can result in broad and persisting biopsychosocial sequelae. Post-TBI sequelae impact, to varying degrees, a person's ability to function at home and work, leading to added emotional distress. It is in the context of these biological, interpersonal, and social disruptions that mood disorders can arise. Mood disorders after TBI occur at a greater frequency than in the general population, with estimates approaching 25% to 50% for major depression, 15% to 30% for dysthymia, and 9% for mania. Post-TBI depression and mania appear to embrace a symptom pre

Overdose among youth in Bahrain: psycho-social characteristics, contact with helping agencies and problems.

A one year cohort of 67 overdose attempts among youth (15-24 years) was examined as part of a case control study. The prevalence rate of 105 per 100,000 population is lower than reported rates in the West but higher than those for the region. The majority of attempters were females and nationals who used paracetamol, and their suicide intent was low. Thirteen percent visited a helping agency in the previous week and 18% in the previous month. The most common difficulties preceding the overdoses were problems with parents, school or work, social isolation and problems with boyfriends, or girlfr

Dropping out of therapy in context of an RCT: a qualitative analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the multifaceted processes underlying psychotherapy dropout by conducting a multi-method qualitative analysis of logbooks, therapist reports and post-interviews of 46 cases of dropout from a randomized controlled trial. METHOD: The data from the 46 cases were subjected to descriptive-interpretative qualitative research to identify common themes and constructs, and to an ideal-type analysis to discover case-wise variation. This triangulation of methods facilitated the development of a layered understanding of dropout. RESULTS: The descriptive-interpretative qual

Body image and associated factors among sexual minority men: A systematic review.

Research suggests that the risk of body image concerns among sexual minority men is high. Recent work has increasingly examined body image in relation to psychological, interpersonal, and behavioral constructs, but these findings have yet to be consolidated and critically examined to identify potential risk and protective factors. The present study sought to systematically review and synthesize published findings on body image among sexual minority men. A total of 136 articles published between January 2011 and March 2022 were included. Sexual minority men were generally reported to have more

Post-traumatic Growth in Women With Histories of Addiction and Victimization Residing in a Sober Living Home.

Research consistently documents the deleterious sequelae of interpersonal trauma, including domestic and sexual violence (DSV). More recently, however, researchers and practitioners have focused on positive outcomes, such as post-traumatic growth (PTG), in survivors of DSV. Although research has begun to document the prevalence and correlates of PTG, no study to our knowledge has explored PTG in a sample of women with histories of addiction and victimization residing in a trauma-informed sober living home (SLH). The purpose of the current study was to examine this gap in the literature. Partic

Depression in Latina mothers: Examining the roles of acculturation, enculturation, social support, and family resources.

OBJECTIVES: Previous findings on the relationship between acculturation and depression have been mixed, such that acculturation has been demonstrated as a protective factor, risk factor, and neutral factor for depressive symptomology. The current study sought to clarify this association by examining the roles of acculturation and enculturation (retention of traditional values and practices) on depression while incorporating contextual variables such as social support and resource adequacy. METHOD: This study utilized archived data from 308 Latina mothers who participated in a randomized clini

The Relationship Between Maternal Personality Functioning and Caregiving Quality.

Previous studies have shown that mothers with categorically defined personality pathology experience substantial difficulties in parenting, but research using Level of Personality Functioning (LPF) is notably lacking. This study explored relationships between maternal LPF and behavioral (Coping with Children's Negative Emotions Scale), attitudinal (Parenting Sense of Competence scale), and representational (Caregiving Helplessness Questionnaire) measures of caregiving in a sample of 170 mothers. We also investigated whether LPF incrementally explains caregiving over anxiety and depression, the

Purpose in Life Among Older Adults: A Machine Learning Analysis of Potential Predictors.

A sense of purpose is a central component of mental well-being in older adulthood. Although many predictors of purpose have been identified, most studies have considered a limited set, leaving their relative importance unclear. The present study addressed this gap by examining a large set of psychological, social, and demographic variables in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults from the Health and Retirement Study. Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) was used to evaluate 47 predictors. Self-esteem emerged as the strongest predictor, followed by positive affect. The leading predic

We-disease Model: A conceptualization of couples' dyadic coping when dealing with chronic physical or mental illness.

Chronic physical illnesses and mental disorders usually do not occur in isolation, but rather within a social context. The course of a disease is influenced not only by medical treatment but also by close relatives, friends, and especially partners, who themselves are affected by illness-related restrictions or care-giver burden. However, to date, the social context is not been adequately considered, with the social component of the biopsychosocial model often receiving only limited attention. With the We-Disease Model (WDM), we promote a systemic/interpersonal view of mental disorders and som

[Epidemiological surveillance of Andes virus: have we really learned anything after COVID-19?].

Recent Andes virus outbreaks have reignited international debate regarding Public Health preparedness for hantaviruses with documented interpersonal transmission capacity. Unlike other orthohantaviruses, Andes virus has demonstrated person-to-person transmission in specific epidemiological settings, including household and nosocomial environments. The recent emergence of cases linked to multinational outbreaks has prompted renewed assessments and recommendations from international public health organizations. This manuscript presents an epidemiological reflection on current surveillance challe

Personality Disorders in Criminal Offenders - A Systematic Literature Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We summarized studies investigating measures related to the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) of the DSM-5 and the personality model in ICD-11 in offenders in forensic-psychiatric treatment or prison to evaluate its forensic utility. RECENT FINDINGS: The reformation of the DSM and ICD with regards to the introduction of dimensional assessments of personality disorders holds many advantages over categorical models concerning clinical utility. With regards to DSM-5 AMPD Criterion A, a limited number of studies (k = 4) report impairments in interpersonal funct

Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences in Adolescents Using the Bright Futures Previsit Questionnaire.

In pediatric primary care, incorporation of existing practice tools into screening for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may reduce screening barriers, promoting timely intervention on negative health impacts from childhood trauma. One such screening tool is the Bright Futures Previsit Questionnaire (PVQ). To evaluate the extent to which the PVQ may be used to screen for ACEs, this research aimed to map items related to ACEs from adolescent PVQs against adverse events historically identified as conventional and expanded ACEs. The adolescent PVQs mapped effectively to nine ACEs: adverse neig

Unraveling the Complexity of Vaginismus in Marital Relationship: A Case Series.

This article presents a case series examining the interplay between marital dynamics and the management of vaginismus. Vaginismus is a spasm of the perivaginal muscles sufficient to prevent penile entry or make it uncomfortable. Given the multifactorial nature of vaginismus, with psychological and relational factors playing significant roles, understanding these dynamics is crucial for effective treatment. The series involves three females, each experiencing vaginismus linked to poor marital adjustment, uncertainty about the relationship, and emotional disconnect. Treatment included psychother

Modulation of Trust in Borderline Personality Disorder by Script-Based Imaginal Exposure to Betrayal.

Interpersonal and trust-related difficulties are central features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this study, we applied script-driven betrayal imagery to evoke mistrustful behavior in a social reinforcement learning task. In 21 BPD and 20 healthy control (HC) participants, we compared this approach to the standard confederate paradigm used in research studies. The script-driven imagery evoked a transient increase in negative affect and also decreased trusting behavior to a similar degree in both groups. Across conditions, we also replicated previously reported between-group diffe

Intergenerational Transmission of Depression during Adolescence: The Mediating Roles of Hostile Attribution Bias, Empathic Concern, and Social Self-Concept.

Few studies have empirically examined the role of peer microsystem in the intergenerational transmission of depression, and more importantly, little is known about the mechanisms underlying this potential pathway of intergenerational transmission. The purpose of the current study was to examine the sequential mediation effects of adolescent hostile attribution bias, empathic concern, and social self-concept on the association between maternal depression and adolescent depression. An urban Chinese sample of 761 mother-child dyads was investigated when the adolescents were in secondary school (M
