How gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men living with HIV experience sexual dysfunction: a thematic analysis of interviews in Montreal, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Sexual dysfunction (SD) is prevalent, yet underaddressed, among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) living with HIV. We aimed at exploring the perceived causes and effects of SD from the perspective of Montreal-based GBM with HIV. METHODS: During 2024, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 31 Montreal-based GBM with HIV who experienced SD (reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, premature/delayed ejaculation or pain during sex) in the past 5 years, asking about perceived causes and impacts. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS:

Beyond Neighbors: Social Capital and Self-Empowerment Among Older Adults Diagnosed with HIV Late.

Older people with HIV (those aged ≥ 50 years) are living longer due to advances in HIV and chronic disease treatment. Social capital is often associated with better HIV clinical outcomes, such as high adherence to medication rates. However, this group is experiencing disrupted social connectedness related to shrinking social networks, which may impact their quality of life. We conducted in-depth interviews via web conferencing among a sample of (n = 18) older people diagnosed with HIV late and attending care at two HIV clinics in New Haven, CT, between February 2020 and July 2021. We employed

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor and Serotonin-Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitor Withdrawal Changes DSM Presentation of Mental Disorders: Results from the Diagnostic Clinical Interview for Drug Withdrawal.

INTRODUCTION: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) may cause withdrawal at dose decrease, discontinuation, or switch. Current diagnostic methods (e.g., DSM) do not take such phenomenon into account. Using a new nosographic classification of withdrawal syndromes due to SSRI/SNRI decrease or discontinuation [by Psychother Psychosom. 2015;84(2):63-71], we explored whether DSM is adequate to identify DSM disorders when withdrawal occurs. METHODS: Seventy-five self-referred patients with a diagnosis of withdrawal syndrome due to d

Mental health and wellbeing in mesothelioma: A qualitative study exploring what helps the wellbeing of those living with this illness and their informal carers.

PURPOSE: Mesothelioma is an incurable, asbestos related cancer with a poor prognosis. Little is known about how patients and carers living with the condition manage their mental health and wellbeing needs. This paper reports findings on interventions being used by patients and informal carers living with mesothelioma and those which they find most helpful. METHODS: In-depth interviews with patients (n = 10) and (informal) carers (n = 11) living with mesothelioma in the UK. We analysed our data inductively using a reflexive thematic analysis approach. RESULTS: Participants described the impor

Association of Borderline Personality Disorder Criteria With Suicide Attempts: Findings From the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders Over 10 Years of Follow-up.

IMPORTANCE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been identified as a strong risk factor for suicidal behavior, including suicide attempts. Delineating specific features that increase risk could inform interventions. OBJECTIVE: To examine factors associated with prospectively observed suicide attempts among participants in the Collaborative Longitudinal Study of Personality Disorders (CLPS), over 10 years of follow-up, with a focus on BPD and BPD criteria. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The CLPS is a multisite, naturalistic, prospective study of adult participants with 4 personality

Health Care Experiences of Black Transgender Women and Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Qualitative Study.

Black sexual and gender minorities (SGM) are at greater risk for HIV compared to their White, cisgender, heterosexual counterparts. Linkage to culturally sensitive health care is, therefore, pivotal for HIV prevention and treatment of Black SGM. Unfortunately, social and structural challenges undermine Black SGM individuals' abilities to obtain adequate health care services, indicating a need to understand Black SGM perceptions of health care. To address this gap, we interviewed Black men who have sex with men and transwomen about their experiences with health care providers. Participants disc

From opiates to methamphetamine: building new harm reduction responses in Jakarta, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rise of stimulant use, most harm reduction programs still focus on people who inject opioids, leaving many people who use methamphetamine (PWUM) underserviced. In Asia, especially, where methamphetamine prevalence has overtaken opioids prevalence, harm reduction programs assisting PWUM are rare. The few existing innovative practices focusing on methamphetamine use lie underreported. Understanding how these programs moved their focus from opiates to methamphetamine could help inspire new harm reduction responses. Hence, this paper analyzes a newly implemented outreach pr

Power relations in sexual agreements among male couples in Southern Africa.

Sexual agreements between same-sex practising men facilitate communication about health promotion activities, including HIV prevention. In African contexts, male couples negotiate their sexual agreements in relation to rigid cultural prescriptions about male power and privilege, intense hostility towards same-sex sexualities and persistent heterogendered socio-cultural norms. Yet the impact of such norms on relationship practices and HIV risk among male couples remains inadequately explored. This qualitative study examined the role of gendered power disparities in establishing sexual agreement

Longitudinal influence of shared marital power on marital quality and attachment security.

Spouses perceiving that they have shared power in marriage has been linked to higher marital quality and attachment security. Existing research, however, is limited in assessing how these perceptions influence both spouses and whether these influences endure over time. To address these limitations, we analyzed the longitudinal relationship reports from 319 couples from the Flourishing Families Project (FFP) to estimate biyearly (Waves 1, 3, and 5) and yearly (Waves 3-5) longitudinal actor-partner interdependence models. Reporting shared power in marriage was linked to the actors' higher marita

Understandings and experiences of visible difference and romantic relationships: A qualitative exploration.

The association between disfigurement ('visible difference') and romantic relationships has received relatively little consideration in the research literature. This qualitative research, conducted in the United Kingdom, explored participants' accounts of their visible difference and romantic life. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 participants who had a variety of visible differences. Inductive thematic analysis demonstrated that participants understood their difference as having a pervasive and enduring impact. These encompassed challenges that must be negotiated in the forma

The provision of cell phones as a recruitment and retention strategy for people who inject drugs enrolling in a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies of drug-using populations often restrict enrollment by limiting participation to those with a working telephone. It is unknown whether supplying phones could broaden recruitment and sustain retention among an urban population of people who inject drugs (PWID). We compare the feasibility of offering pay-by-month phones to gift card compensation as part of an ongoing randomized controlled trial of hospitalized PWID. METHODS: Participants were recruited from inpatient services at an urban hospital in Boston, MA to participate in an ongoing randomized trial testing a motivatio

Catastrophic costs of tuberculosis care: a mixed methods study from Puducherry, India.

BACKGROUND: The average expenditure incurred by patients in low- and middle-income countries towards diagnosis and treatment of TB ranges from $55 to $8198. This out-of-pocket expenditure leads to impoverishment of households. One of the three main targets of the End TB Strategy (2016-2035) is that no TB-affected household suffers catastrophic costs due to TB. Study setting was free care under national tuberculosis program (NTP), Puducherry district, India. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the study were among the newly diagnosed and previously treated tuberculosis (TB) patients, to (a) estimate

Early illness experiences related to unexpected heart surgery: A qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on patients' experiences following emergency cardiac surgery focus on evaluation of patients after their discharge. Few studies have evaluated patients' experiences after being transferred from intensive care and before being discharged. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe patients' experiences in the early stages of recovery following emergency heart surgery. METHODS: For this exploratory qualitative descriptive study, 13 patients were recruited from a medical centre in northern Taiwan. Participants had undergone emergency heart surgery and had resided in the ca

Negative subthreshold psychotic symptoms distinguish 22q11.2 deletion syndrome from other neurodevelopmental disorders: A two-site study.

About one third of individuals with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) develop schizophrenia. Notably, a full-blown psychotic disorder is usually preceded by subthreshold symptoms. Therefore, it is important to identify early signs of psychosis in this population, a task that is complicated by the intellectual disabilities typically seen in 22q11.2DS. We aimed to identify subthreshold psychotic symptoms that distinguish 22q11.2DS from other neurodevelopmental disorders. The study included two independent cohorts from Tel Aviv and Philadelphia. 22q11.2DS (N=171) and typically developing (TD;

Bridging the Gap between Aetiological and Maintaining Factors in Social Anxiety Disorder: The Impact of Socially Traumatic Experiences on Beliefs, Imagery and Symptomatology.

BACKGROUND: A number of key environmental factors during childhood have been implicated in the aetiology of social anxiety disorder (SAD), including aversive social experiences, traumatic life events and parent-child interaction. However, understanding the nature, interactions and relative contributions of these factors remains unclear. Furthermore, the relation of aversive social experiences to the development of key maintaining factors in SAD requires elucidation. AIMS: The current study aimed to extend previous research regarding the aetiology of SAD by investigating the relationship betwe
