INTRODUCTION: "Subureteric Teflon INGection" (STING) of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/polytef) paste to treat vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children was popularised in 1984. It was later abandoned as an implantation material because of the possibility of migration from the injection site. Giant-cell foreign-body granuloma to Polytef in the bladder is a rare cause of ureteric obstruction. Only a handful of cases have been reported in the literature.
METHODS: We performed a prospective analysis of a series of 6 adult patients who had childhood STING and presented with foreign-body granuloma to

BACKGROUND: The use of body-warming systems is recommended by international anaesthesia societies for patients undergoing surgery. Limited research is however available on the influence of positioning of forced-air warming blankets for patients undergoing spinal surgery. This study aimed to investigate how patients' intra-operative body temperature was affected by the position of forced-air warming blankets while undergoing spinal surgery on a spinal table.
DESIGN: A randomized comparative experimental study was conducted with 60 adult patients undergoing posterior spinal surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Medical tourism refers to the process of patients travelling outside of their native country to undergo elective surgical procedures and is a rapidly expanding healthcare phenomenon [1-3]. Whilst a multitude of established Private Healthcare Providers (PHPs) offer cosmetic surgical procedures within the United Kingdom (UK), a growing number of patients are opting to travel outside of the UK to undergo cosmetic surgery.
AIM: To assess the number of patients presenting to the Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, with cosmetic surgery tourism complications, from outside of the UK, and

INTRODUCTION: Surgeons are expected to work long hours in operating theatres. A high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal (WRMSK) injuries and pain in healthcare professions exists. We aimed to study WRMSK pain and injuries in general surgeons and study their risk in different surgical techniques comprising open, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed in compliance with The PRISMA checklist. Search was performed in PubMed and Cochrane library databases for 6 years to 2024. The search terms used were "disability and surgeon", "occupational i

INTRODUCTION: Hernias following iliac bone grafting are a rare but significant complication, with the earliest case reported in 1945. Repairing these hernias is challenging. Appropriate repair techniques are needed to minimise morbidity and recurrence. We present our experience with three cases of post-iliac graft hernia repair with mesh anchored to titanium mini-plates and a systematic review of current literature.
METHOD: We conducted a systematic review of the literature in February 2024 on two online databases, PubMed®/MEDLINE and EMBASE, in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Keywords use

INTRODUCTION: Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) patients with acute spinal fractures represent a challenge for practicing spine surgeons due to difficult operative anatomy and susceptibility to complications.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does intraoperative CT-navigation improve outcomes in patients with ankylosing spondylitis undergoing surgery?
METHODS: A retrospective review was carried out at our centre from 05/2016-06/2021 to identify AS patients presenting with a traumatic spinal fracture, managed surgically with posterior spinal fusion (PSF). Cohorts were categorised and compared for outcomes based o

PURPOSE: Arthroscopy of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (1 MTP) has gained increasing attention in the last two decades. Despite numerous studies describing the surgical technique, only a few provide clinical or radiological outcome data. This systematic review aimed to analyze studies presenting objectively measurable clinical outcomes of patients who underwent 1 MTP arthroscopy as the primary procedure, categorizing results by indication pathology.
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched for studies reporting outcomes of primary 1 MTP arthroscop

BACKGROUND: The updated 2014 BTA guidelines emphasised a more conservative, risk adapted model for the management of low-risk differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). In comparison to historical approach of total thyroidectomy combined with radioactive iodine, treatment de-escalation is increasingly supported.
AIMS: To evaluate the impact of the updated BTA guidelines on the management of DTC cases at regional UK centre.
METHODS: All DTC patients were retrospectively identified from regional thyroid MDT database between Jan2009-Dec2020. Oncological treatment and clinico-pathological characterist

INTRODUCTION: The unique pressures of a surgical career put surgeons at particular risk of mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. Surgeons have previously been shown to have a high prevalence of psychological distress. This study aimed to systematically review the prevalence of anxiety and depression amongst surgeons, and to identify factors that can modify the risk of anxiety and depression in surgeons.
METHODS: A 10-year systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) guidelines to identif

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has increasing worldwide prevalence, fuelled by rising obesity rates, and weight reduction is the mainstay of its management. We sought to study the effect of bariatric surgery, the most effective long-term treatment for obesity and associated metabolic disorders, on liver function in people with obesity.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective longitudinal cohort study of 511 patients who had undergone bariatric surgery (71 sleeve gastrectomy and 440 gastric bypass) over 60 months of follow-up. Patients were stratified into grou

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is of the most serious emergencies in neurosurgical practice and continues to be associated with high morbidity and mortality. Beyond securing the ruptured aneurysm to prevent a rebleed, physicians continue to be concerned about potential complications such as cerebral vasospasm-delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), an area where management remains highly variable. This study aimed at reviewing the most recent literature and assessing any up-to-date schemes for treating the most common aSAH neurological complications in adults that can be applie

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a breathing disorder resulting in blockage of airflow and hypo-oxygenation. The incidence of OSA in patients with class 2 or 3 obesity (Body Mass index, BMI >35) is 60-70%. Unfortunately, most bariatric patients are unaware they suffer from OSA. Untreated OSA can lead to perioperative cardiopulmonary complications. The aim of this study was to identify predictors associated with moderate to severe OSA and asses the incidence of OSA-related complications in a large cohort of patients who underwent OSA-screening and treatment if indicated before bariatr

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Thoracic surgeons are now adopting a new method of using a mesh covering to reduce recurrence in surgical pleurodesis for pneumothorax. We aimed to review the literature and compare the outcomes of using mesh covering as an additional procedure during surgical pleurodesis.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed from inception to October 2022 on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Scopus. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational cohort studies (OCSs) comparing the use of mesh coverage, and different materials were included. Data were extracted to compare re

BACKGROUND: Readmissions following colorectal surgery (CRS) have negative clinical, psychological and financial implications. Identifying patients at risk of readmission remains challenging.
AIMS: To determine factors predictive of those likely to require readmission at 40-days following major CRS and to identify novel strategies capable of reducing readmissions.
METHODS: Consecutive patients were studied from a prospectively maintained database. All patients were operated on by a single surgeon in a high-volume centre. Where applicable, photography was recorded by patients and emailed direc

BACKGROUND: We examined analgesic drug use before and after total hip arthroplasty (THA) by sex and age, and impact of comorbidity in that context.
METHODS: Using Danish nationwide medical registries, we included 105,520 THA patients (1996-2018). We calculated prevalence of overall analgesic drug use and use of NSAIDs and opioids separately in four quarters before (-Q4 to -Q1) and after THA (Q1 to Q4). -Q4 and Q4 was compared using prevalence rate ratios (PRR) with 95% confidence interval (CI).
RESULTS: Among women, analgesic drug use was 46% in -Q4, 65% in Q1, but decreased to 31% in Q4 (PR

BACKGROUND: Surgeons work long shifts and are frequently on call. Pressure to make quick and accurate decisions along with the responsibility of performing complex procedures contribute to surgeons' high stress-levels, anxiety and altered empathy level. We aimed to study surgeons' personality and meaning in life at two different centres.
METHODS: General surgeons completed 47 questions. Visual analogous scale-items with controlled internal consistency (Cronbach alpha) coefficients varying from .77 to .85 were used from the following scales: Global Measure of Perceived Stress; Hostility Questi
