Affordable passive 3D-printed prosthesis for persons with partial hand amputation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Partial hand amputations are common in developing countries and have a negative impact on patients and their families' quality of life. The uniqueness of each partial hand amputation, coupled with the relatively high costs of prostheses, makes it challenging to provide suitable prosthetic solutions in developing countries. Current solutions often have long lead times and require a high level of expertise to produce. The aim of this study was to design and develop an affordable patient-specific partial hand prosthesis for developing countries. TECHNIQUE: The prosthesis was

Barriers and aids to routine neuromuscular monitoring and consistent reversal practice-A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular monitoring is recommended whenever a neuromuscular blocking agent is administered, but surveys have demonstrated inconsistent monitoring practices. Using qualitative methods, we aimed to explore barriers and aids to routine neuromuscular monitoring and consistent reversal practice. METHODS: Focus group interviews were conducted to obtain insights into the thoughts and attitudes of individual anaesthetists, as well as the influence of colleagues and department culture. Interviews were conducted at five Danish and one US hospital. Data were analysed using template anal

Thermoregulation and shivering responses in elite alpine skiers.

This study aimed to characterise the thermoregulatory responses of elite alpine skiers. Core (gastro-intestinal) and skin temperatures were recorded continuously from 4 national team skiers representing 18 training-sessions for a total of 83 ski runs (average ambient temperature 1.9°C). Shivering responses were estimated from quadriceps and hamstrings EMG recordings during 77 chairlifts. Temperature responses were also obtained from 6 accompanying staffs representing 16 training-sessions (passive in 10 cases, following the skiers in 6 cases). Core temperature of the skiers (P < .001) but not t

Left-posterior approach for artery-first en bloc resection in laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy for left-sided pancreatic cancer.

PURPOSE: We describe a "left-posterior approach" in which the important steps in laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) for left-sided pancreatic cancer are accomplished in the direction caudal and dorsal to the pancreas. METHODS: The patients who underwent LDP with a left-posterior approach at our hospital from January 2016 to April 2020 were reviewed to evaluate the short-term postoperative outcomes. In LDP, we first dissected retroperitoneal tissues above the left renal vein and superior mesenteric artery, yielding the mobilization of the pancreatic body widely. Then, the splenic artery

Double-Incision approach with suspension of the orbicularis oculi muscle and relieving of tension for upper eyelid rejuvenation in Asian women.

BACKGROUND: In Asian women, upper eyelid skin laxity, lateral hooding, and upper eyelid and brow asymmetry in the aging upper eyelid are prominently and frequently seen. It is difficult to completely resolve these problems with the classical single-incision method. In this study, we investigate the utility of a double-incision approach to address aging-related changes of the upper eyelid. METHODS: From September 2017 to March 2019, 51 patients underwent this procedure. Through a sub-brow incision, the skin and subcutaneous tissue were excised and the orbicularis oculi muscle (OOM) flap and mu

Ceiling Fan-Related Head Injuries in Children: A Queensland Neurosurgical Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Ceiling fans are a widespread energy-efficient appliance required for managing the sweltering weather extremes encountered in northern Australian states including Queensland. Ceiling fans are also a rare cause of serious head injury in children requiring neurosurgical intervention. There is limited available evidence on the presentation, mechanism, and management of these injuries. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of children who suffered ceiling fan injuries admitted to the Queensland Children's Hospital, a level-1 paediatric trauma hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, under the

Computing the Rearrangement Distance of Natural Genomes.

The computation of genomic distances has been a very active field of computational comparative genomics over the past 25 years. Substantial results include the polynomial-time computability of the inversion distance by Hannenhalli and Pevzner in 1995 and the introduction of the double cut and join distance by Yancopoulos et al. in 2005. Both results, however, rely on the assumption that the genomes under comparison contain the same set of unique markers (syntenic genomic regions, sometimes also referred to as genes). In 2015, Shao et al. relax this condition by allowing for duplicate markers i

Improving the detection of subscapularis tears using a specific transverse CT arthrography image.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of subscapularis (SSC) tendon tears is often underestimated. This negatively impacts the shoulder function because the SSC muscle is a powerful internal rotator. The primary aim of this study was to compare a blended clinical and radiological preoperative index of suspicion for SSC tears to the arthroscopic findings. The secondary aim was to compare the surgeon's and radiologist's index of suspicion to determine which is more accurate. HYPOTHESIS: Analyzing a transverse image passing under the tip of the coracoid process, in combination with clinical examination, wi

[Elastotonometry for evaluation of biomechanical characteristics of the eye after surgical hyperopia correction].

UNLABELLED: Modern tonometers (Ocular Response Analyzer) can only show the presence of biomechanical disorders of the fibrous membrane, while elastotonometry reacts not only to their presence, but also to their type. PURPOSE: To build a mathematical model that would use elastotonometry to assess biomechanical properties of the eye in treatment of hyperopia with LASIK and FemtoLASIK surgeries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 64 operations: 34 FemtoLASIK surgeries, and 31 LASIK surgeries. All patients before and after surgery underwent standard examination necessary for keratorefracti

Parenteral immunization of Salmonella Typhimurium ghosts with surface-displayed Escherichia coli flagellin enhancesTLR-5 mediated activation of immune responses that protect the chicken against Salmonella infection.

The present study investigates the enhancement of immunogenicity and protection efficacy of Salmonella Typhimurium ghosts surface-displayed with FliC against chicken salmonellosis. The membrane-anchored FliC is a potential TLR-5 agonist, delivers an essential adjuvant effect for the ghost vaccine candidate. The present ghost plasmid pJHL184 construct carries a convergent dual promoter system that has the temperature-dependent induction of the phage lysis gene E and the target antigen FliC at the same time. Under permissible conditions of temperatures, less than 30 °C at the presence of 20 mM l

Endoscopic dissection of refractory pancreatic duct stricture via accessory pancreatic duct approach for concurrent treatment of anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction in aging patients.

BACKGROUND: Although endoscopic management of pancreatic strictures by dilation and stenting is well established, some high-grade strictures are refractory to conventional methods. Here, we report a novel technique via accessory pancreatic duct (APD) approach to simultaneously release chronic pancreatitis-associated pancreatic stricture and correct anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction (APBJ). Due to APBJ and stricture of proximal main pancreatic duct, the APD turned out to be compensatory expansion. The stiff stenosis was dissected along the axial of APD using needle-knife electrocautery or h

Decoding voluntary movements and postural tremor based on thalamic LFPs as a basis for closed-loop stimulation for essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: High frequency Deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting motor thalamus is an effective therapy for essential tremor (ET). However, conventional continuous stimulation may deliver unnecessary current to the brain since tremor mainly affects voluntary movements and sustained postures in ET. OBJECTIVE: We aim to decode both voluntary movements and the presence of postural tremor from the Local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the electrode implanted in motor thalamus for stimulation, in order to close the loop for DBS so that stimulation could be delivered on demand, without the n

Three-stage treatment for nitrogen and phosphorus recovery from human urine: Hydrolysis, precipitation and vacuum stripping.

Source separation of human urine has not been widely adopted because of scaling on urine collecting fixtures and lack of verified technologies for on-site utilization of waterless urine. This study investigated the effects of flushing liquid, temperature and urease amendment on hydrolysis of urea to ammonia, explored ammonia recovery via vacuum stripping in connection with phosphorus recovery via struvite precipitation in different sequences, and performed economic analysis of a proposed nutrient recovery strategy. It was found that acetic acid could be dosed at 0.05-0.07 N to flush urine-dive

Successful balloon valvuloplasty of a subpulmonic membrane associated with cor triatriatum dexter: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Subpulmonic membrane as a cause of right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in patients with concordant ventriculoarterial connection and intact ventricular septum is considered to be rare. Association with cor triatriatum dexter and success of subpulmonic balloon valvuloplasty have never been reported, at least to the best of our knowledge. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old Moroccan boy was referred to our tertiary care hospital with complaints of dyspnea on moderate exertion. A physical examination revealed parasternal lift, systolic thrill, and a 4/6 ejection systolic murmur,

Differential expression of the TPα and TPβ isoforms of the human T Prostanoid receptor during chronic inflammation of the prostate: Role for FOXP1 in the transcriptional regulation of TPβ during monocyte-macrophage differentiation.

Inflammation is linked to prostate cancer (PCa) and to other diseases of the prostate. The prostanoid thromboxane (TX)A2 is a pro-inflammatory mediator implicated in several prostatic diseases, including PCa. TXA2 signals through the TPα and TPβ isoforms of the T Prostanoid receptor (TP) which exhibit several functional differences and transcriptionally regulated by distinct promoters Prm1 and Prm3, respectively, within the TBXA2R gene. This study examined the expression of TPα and TPβ in inflammatory infiltrates within human prostate tissue. Strikingly, TPβ expression was detected in 94% of i

Aggressive Graphic/Surgical R0 Resection and Jejunal Interposition with Preservation of Mesojejunal Autonomic Nerves in Patients with Stage IV Esophagogastric Junction Adenocarcinoma: A Report of 3 Cases.

BACKGROUND Three patients with stage IV esophagogastric junction cancer (EGJC) underwent extended resection to achieve a graphic/surgical R0 status (no visible remnant of viable tumor in imaging/surgical findings) and adjuvant chemotherapy from the early postoperative period. We also introduced use of our digestive reconstruction technique in these patients. CASE REPORT We used jejunal interposition for digestive reconstruction, which involved end-to-end jejunojejunostomy with a biofragmentable anastomosis ring. The mesojejunal autonomic nerves of the lifted jejunum were preserved. The first a
