Regret, uncertainty, and bounded rationality in norm-driven decisions.

This study introduces an agent-based model to examine how regret, uncertainty, and social norms interact to shape vaccination behavior during epidemics. The model integrates three behavioral mechanisms-anticipated regret, evolving norms, and uncertainty-dependent trust-within a unified learning framework. Grounded in psychology and behavioral economics, it captures how individuals make probabilistic choices influenced by material payoffs, fear, trust, and social approval. Simulations of the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered process show that choice precision has context-dependent effects. In the

Rumination Mediates the Relation of Hostile Attribution to Psychological Maladjustment Among Adolescents from Three Countries.

Addressing global concerns about youth mental health requires understanding longitudinal pathways to psychological maladjustment among diverse youth. Hostile attribution bias (HAB) and hostile rumination (HR) are cognitive vulnerabilities associated with multiple forms of psychological maladjustment among diverse youth. This study longitudinally examined whether HR mediates the relation of HAB to aggression, anxiety, and depression symptoms in a sample of adolescents from three countries. Participants included 532 mothers, 384 fathers, and 566 youth (50% female) from Colombia, Italy (Naples an

Mental Health and Alcohol Consumption Among University Students in the Post-Pandemic Context: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Study in Portugal.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic had significant effects on mental health and lifestyle behaviours, especially among university students who experienced academic disruptions, social isolation, and fewer social interactions. Alcohol consumption has long been part of student culture. Still, the influence of post-pandemic academic reintegration on drinking patterns and psychological distress remains relatively unexplored, particularly in countries like Portugal, where student traditions heavily shape consumption habits. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of alcohol consumption, depres

Testing a conceptual framework of loneliness, social isolation and health outcomes in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are established risk factors for adverse cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and cognitive outcomes in later life, yet the pathways underlying these associations remain underexplored. This study tests the structure of a published framework linking social isolation and loneliness to health outcomes through psychological, behavioural and physiological pathways. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from 1,685 Singaporean adults over the age of 60 from the Wellbeing of the Singapore Elderly study. Path analysis was used to examine the psychological (sub

Development of the Sleeping Pills Receptivity and Involuntariness Scale-6 (SPRIS-6) to Assess Acceptance of Hypnotics Use.

BACKGROUND: Assessing an individual's acceptance of sleep medications is valuable for clinicians, as it may be the starting point for discussing the treatment of insomnia, whether pharmacologically or nonpharmacologically. This study developed a rating scale for measuring psychological receptivity to hypnotics and validated it in a general population. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous survey in a general Korean population. First, we developed a rating scale for psychological receptivity to hypnotic use using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) in Sample I (N = 300), followed by confirmatory fa

Psychological distress and uterine fibroids: a bidirectional two-sample mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Observational data indicates a connection between emotional discomfort, such as anxiety and depression, and uterine fibroids (UFs). However, additional investigation is required to establish the causal relationship between them. Hence, we assessed the reciprocal causality between four psychological disorders and UFs utilizing two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS: To evaluate the causal relationship between four types of psychological distress (depressive symptoms, severe depression, anxiety or panic attacks, mood swings) and UFs, bidirectional two-sample MR was employe

The impact of childhood psychological maltreatment on mental health outcomes in adulthood: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that childhood psychological maltreatment (i.e., emotional abuse and emotional neglect) is associated with mental health problems that persist into adulthood, for example anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal ideation, and aggression; however, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the existing literature would help clarify the magnitude and moderators of these associations, and the extent to which they may be affected by publication bias, as well as the methodological strengths and weakness of studies in this area. METHOD: The re

Developmental hearing loss impedes auditory task learning and performance in gerbils.

The consequences of developmental hearing loss have been reported to include both sensory and cognitive deficits. To investigate these issues in a non-human model, auditory learning and asymptotic psychometric performance were compared between normal hearing (NH) adult gerbils and those reared with conductive hearing loss (CHL). At postnatal day 10, before ear canal opening, gerbil pups underwent bilateral malleus removal to induce a permanent CHL. Both CHL and control animals were trained to approach a water spout upon presentation of a target (Go stimuli), and withhold for foils (Nogo stimul

Posttraumatic stress in deployed Marines: prospective trajectories of early adaptation.

We examined the course of PTSD symptoms in a cohort of U.S. Marines (N = 867) recruited for the Marine Resiliency Study (MRS) from a single infantry battalion that deployed as a unit for 7 months to Afghanistan during the peak of conflict there. Data were collected via structured interviews and self-report questionnaires 1 month prior to deployment and again at 1, 5, and 8 months postdeployment. Second-order growth mixture modeling was used to disaggregate symptom trajectories; multinomial logistic regression and relative weights analysis were used to assess the role of combat exposure, prior
