Post-saccadic oscillations in eye movement data recorded with pupil-based eye trackers reflect motion of the pupil inside the iris.

Current video eye trackers use information about the pupil center to estimate orientation and movement of the eye. While dual Purkinje eye trackers suffer from lens wobble and scleral search coils may be influenced by contact lens slippage directly after saccades, it is not known whether pupil-based eye trackers produces similar artifacts in the data. We recorded eye movements from participants making repetitive, horizontal saccades and compared the movement in the data with pupil- and iris movements extracted from the eye images. Results showed that post-saccadic instabilities clearly exist i

Dynamics of Klebsiella pneumoniae OmpA transmembrane domain: the four extracellular loops display restricted motion behavior in micelles and in lipid bilayers.

The transmembrane domain of Klebsiella pneumoniae OmpA (KpOmpA) possesses four long extracellular loops that exhibit substantial sequence va … r homologs in Escherichia coli OmpA, and the N-terminal halves of L1 and L3 exhibit more restricted motions. We suggest a correlation between the sequence variability and the dynamics of certain loop regions, which accounts for their respective contributions to the structural and immunological properties of the protein.

Balanced steady-state free-precession MR imaging for measuring pulsatile motion of cerebellar tonsils during the cardiac cycle: a reliability study.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of the motion of the cerebellar tonsils is of interest in diseases affecting the CSF flow at the foramen magnum. Cardiac-gated balanced steady-state free-precession technique, which has recently been shown to demonstrate the pulsatile motion of neural structures, appears well suited to allow direct measurement of craniocaudal translation of cerebellar tonsils during the cardiac cycle. Our aim was to assess the intra-observer and inter-observer variability in the assessment of tonsillar motion utilizing this technique. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 44 patients…

Transgenic mice reveal unexpected diversity of on-off direction-selective retinal ganglion cell subtypes and brain structures involved in motion processing.

On-Off direction-selective retinal ganglion cells (DSGCs) encode the axis of visual motion. They respond strongly to an object moving in a preferred direction and weakly to an object moving in the opposite, "null," direction. Historically, On-Off DSGCs were classified into four subtypes according to their directional preference (anterior, posterior, superior, or inferior). Here, we compare two genetically identified populations of On-Off DSGCs: dopamine receptor 4 (DRD4)-DSGCs and thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (TRHR)-DSGCs. We find that although both populations are tuned for posterio…

Evaluation of adaptation to visually induced motion sickness based on the maximum cross-correlation between pulse transmission time and heart rate.

BACKGROUND: Computer graphics and virtual reality techniques are useful to develop automatic and effective rehabilitation systems. However, a kind of virtual environment including unstable visual images presented to wide field screen or a head mounted display tends to induce motion sickness. The motion sickness induced in using a rehabilitation system not only inhibits effective training but also may harm patients' health. There are few studies that have objectively evaluated the effects of the repetitive exposures to these stimuli on humans. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ada…

Relationship between dobutamine-induced regional wall motion abnormalities and coronary flow reserve in heart transplant patients without angiographic coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMA) demonstrated by dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) are a sensitive predictor of coronary artery disease (CAD) in heart transplant recipients. However, RWMA have been shown to occur in patients with angiographically "normal" coronary arteries. The reasons for this are unknown. We sought to determine if abnormal responses to dobutamine in this setting can be explained by microvascular dysfunction in the coronary circulation as detected by decreased coronary flow reserve (CFR). METHODS: Twenty-six consecutive heart transplant patients w…

Early dynamic motion versus postoperative immobilization in patients with extensor indicis proprius transfer to restore thumb extension: a prospective randomized study.

Transfer of the extensor indicis proprius is the gold standard for reconstruction of the extensor pollicis longus tendon to restore thumb extension. Twenty patients were included to a prospective randomized trial to assess whether an early dynamic motion protocol yields a better outcome than immobilization. Evaluation included postoperative range of motion, grip strength, duration of treatment, and time off work. Ten patients of each group had the thumb immobilized in an extension thumb spica cast for 3 weeks after surgery or underwent an early dynamic motion protocol. Follow-up examinations w…

Validation of a Sensorized Forearm Crutch for Quantifying Partial Weight-Bearing During Assisted Gait Using Optical Motion Capture and Instrumented Treadmill.

Human gait analysis is a key component of rehabilitation medicine, enabling objective assessment of patient recovery. In crutch-assisted locomotion, however, conventional forearm crutches operate as passive devices, providing no quantitative information on load distribution or patient adherence to partial weight-bearing (PWB) prescriptions. This work presents the design and dynamic validation of a sensorized forearm crutch system for biomechanical monitoring during assisted gait. The proposed device combines a force-sensing module based on a full Wheatstone bridge strain-gauge configuration wi…

The influence of sport type and acute stress on biological motion working memory: Adaptive neuro-behavioral performance in open-skill athletes.

BACKGROUND: Biological motion working memory (BMWM) plays a crucial role in athletes' dynamic information processing. Despite evidence of cognitive benefits from athletic training, the combined effects of sport type and acute stress on BMWM remain underexplored. This study investigated behavioral and neural responses during BMWM processing among open-skill athletes, closed-skill athletes, and non-specialized participants, with a focus on the moderating effects of acute stress. METHODS: Sixty-five healthy male participants (21 closed-skill athletes, 18 open-skill athletes, and 26 non-specializ…

Accuracy and Validity of 3D Markerless Motion Capture Compared to Marker-Based Systems for Lower-Limb Biomechanical Assessment: A Systematic Review.

Marker-based motion capture systems are considered the gold standard for biomechanical analysis of movements associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk; however, their cost and technical requirements limit their use for large-scale athlete screening. Markerless motion capture has emerged as a potential alternative, using pose estimation algorithms or depth cameras to quantify movement without reflective markers. This systematic review evaluated the accuracy and validity of markerless motion capture systems for measuring lower-limb kinematics during jump-landing tasks commonly…
