The toxicity of busulphan and cyclophosphamide as the preparative regimen for bone marrow transplantation.

The toxicity of the conditioning regimen of high dose busulphan (Bu) (16 mg/kg) and cyclophosphamide (Cy) (120 mg/kg) has been compared to cyclophosphamide (Cy) (120 mg/kg) and fractionated total body irradiation (TBI) 12-14 Gy. Since 1985, 67 patients have received conditioning of Bu and Cy for HLA-identical sibling bone marrow transplants. 166 patients have received Cy and TBI since 1981. Veno-occlusive disease of the liver occurred in 19% in the Bu-Cy group and was fatal in 1/12 cases, but only in 1.3% of Cy-TBI group (P less than 0.0005) and was fatal in 1/2. 30% of evaluable patients deve

The msf gene causes condition-specific shifts in global gene expression in Haemophilus influenzae.

UNLABELLED: Haemophilus influenzae is a diverse human-restricted bacterium that normally colonizes the healthy nasopharynx but also causes common infections. Comparisons of clinical isolate genomes previously identified a gene, msf, that contained Sel1-like repeats that were associated with clinical disease. Mutant analysis had further found that msf improved survival in macrophages and increased systemic infection in an animal model. However, the role of msf in other conditions and its molecular function remain unknown. To identify protein-protein interactions with Msf, a yeast two-hybrid scr

Long-term effects of widespread pharmaceutical pollution on trade-offs between behavioural, life-history and reproductive traits in fish.

In our rapidly changing world, understanding how species respond to shifting conditions is of paramount importance. Pharmaceutical pollutants are widespread in aquatic ecosystems globally, yet their impacts on animal behaviour, life-history and reproductive allocation remain poorly understood, especially in the context of intraspecific variation in ecologically important traits that facilitate species' adaptive capacities. We test whether a widespread pharmaceutical pollutant, fluoxetine (Prozac), disrupts the trade-off between individual-level (co)variation in behavioural, life-history and re

Skin as a Metabolic Organ: Dermatologic Markers of Morbid Obesity and Their Role in Risk Stratification and Treatment Monitoring.

Morbid obesity is a chronic condition characterized by metabolic disorders and low-grade chronic inflammation, both of which are closely linked to insulin resistance and adipokine dysregulation. In addition to its systemic effects, obesity also leads to structural and functional changes in the skin, supporting its role as an active metabolic and immunological organ. This study analyzed skin lesions occurring in individuals with morbid obesity and explored their potential relevance in the context of metabolic risk and treatment response rather than establishing clinically validated tools. The f

Comparative Efficacy of Pharmacological Interventions for Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a prevalent and debilitating urological condition affecting approximately 2-10% of men globally, with a substantial impact on quality of life, productivity, and healthcare utilization. Despite the availability of multiple pharmacological options, their comparative efficacy remains uncertain. This meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of pharmacological interventions for CP/CPPS based on the NIH-Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI). METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar

A murine model of ulcerative colitis: induced with sinusitis-derived superantigen and food allergen.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of ulcerative colitis (UC) is to be understood. The basic pathological feature of UC is intestinal chronic inflammation. Superantigen, such as Staphylococcus enterotoxin B (SEB), is reported to compromise intestinal barrier function by increasing epithelial permeability and initiate inflammation in the intestinal mucosa. Inasmuch as anatomic position of the sinus, chronic sinusitis-derived SEB may follow the secretion and to be swallowed down to the gastrointestinal tract and induce lesions to the intestinal mucosa. METHODS: Sinus wash fluid (SWF, containing SEB) was

Sociocultural identification of migrant forensic psychiatric inpatients facing mandatory repatriation - a hospital ethnography.

In the Netherlands, terbeschikkingstelling (TBS) is a forensic psychiatric measure imposed on individuals who commit a criminal offence under diminished responsibility due to severe mental illness. For TBS patients without Dutch nationality, mandatory repatriation replaces resocialization as the final goal of TBS treatment, as they lose Dutch residency rights due to their offence. This article examines how this subgroup of TBS patients at a Dutch Centre for Transcultural Forensic Psychiatry reflect on and negotiate cultural identity at the intersection of criminal and migration law. Focusing o

AB4-Loaded Nanomicelle Hydrogel Promotes Targeting of the Dysregulated Diabetic Wound Microenvironment via Coordinated Multistage Repair.

(1) Background: Impaired diabetic wound healing stems from systemic dysregulation of the wound-healing cascade under hyperglycemic conditions, producing a disordered microenvironment marked by sustained inflammation, defective angiogenesis, and aberrant extracellular matrix remodeling, multifactorial, multistage pathological interactions demanding multi-target intervention. (2) Methods: We constructed a multifunctional nanocomposite hydrogel dressing (PGAs@CDV) based on a "drug-carrier integration" strategy, targeting the dysregulated hemostasis, inflammation, and proliferation phases of diabe

Urolithins in clinical translation: from gut microbial metabolites to precision interventions.

Urolithins are gut microbiota-derived metabolites generated from ellagitannins and ellagic acid, and have emerged as promising mediators at the diet-microbiota-host interface. Interest in this metabolite family has increased substantially owing to growing evidence that urolithins, particularly urolithin A, influence mitochondrial quality control, autophagy, inflammatory signaling, and metabolic homeostasis across multiple tissues. These mechanistic properties have positioned urolithins as candidate interventions for aging-related functional decline, cardiometabolic disorders, neuroinflammatory

The importance of mitochondria and mitochondrial calcium signaling in health and disease: an updated outlook on inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondria are central regulators of cellular bioenergetics, calcium homeostasis and apoptosis. Beyond these classical roles, emerging evidence highlights their pivotal involvement in inflammation and related disease progression. Under physiological conditions, mitochondria sustain metabolism and signaling; however, when dysfunctional, they can release mitochondrial damage-associated molecular patterns, such as mitochondrial DNA, reactive oxygen species, cardiolipin and ATP, into the intra- or extracellular environment. MAIN BODY: The release of these mitochondrial components act

Co-developing SHELTER (Safe, Healthy Environments and Local Transformation for Equity and Resilience) with families with lived experience of homelessness in the New York City shelter system: A community needs assessment and data collection protocol.

In January 2025, the nightly census revealed that over 120,000 people were staying in New York City (NYC) shelters, including more than 41,000 children, of whom almost half were aged 0-5 years. Children under five years old (under-5s) experiencing homelessness are especially vulnerable because the first five years of life are a critical period for child growth, including approximately 90% of brain development. Furthermore, under-5s experiencing homelessness have a higher risk for multiple adverse childhood experiences, developing chronic health conditions, and recurrent homelessness across the

Glyphosate and health in Uruguay: A 25-year review of research on agricultural worker exposure.

In Uruguay, glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, applied across both small- and large-scale horticultural crops. Agricultural workers in direct contact with glyphosate during its application and handling constitute a vulnerable population exposed to this herbicide. The purpose of this report is to assess the health impacts of exposure to glyphosate on workers within the Uruguayan context. A PRISMA-guided bibliographic review was conducted using databases including PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO, Google Scholar, and academic and governmental repositories in Uruguay. Studies published between 2000

From Seed to Therapy: Sesamin and Phytosterols of Sesamum indicum in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Ovarian Cancer.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and ovarian cancer are complex hormone-related disorders that share many overlapping endocrine, metabolic, and inflammatory abnormalities, including hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, and altered ovarian steroid production. There is growing evidence that dysregulation of key molecular pathways, such as CYP17A1-mediated androgen biosynthesis, androgen receptor (AR) signaling, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), contributes to disease progression in both conditions. Sesamum indicum L. (sesame)
