Fear in the mind's eye: the neural correlates of differential fear acquisition to imagined conditioned stimuli.

Mental imagery is involved in both the expression and treatment of fear-related disorders such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the neural correlates associated with the acquisition and generalization of differential fear conditioning to imagined conditioned stimuli are relatively unknown. In this study, healthy human participants (n = 27) acquired differential fear conditioning to imagined conditioned stimuli paired with a physical unconditioned stimulus (i.e. mild shock), as measured via self-reported fear, the skin conductance response and significant right anterior i

Additive manufacturing of peripheral nerve conduits - Fabrication methods, design considerations and clinical challenges.

Tissue-engineered nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) are a viable clinical alternative to autografts and allografts and have been widely used to treat peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs). Although these NGCs are successful to some extent, they cannot aid in native regeneration by improving native-equivalent neural innervation or regrowth. Further, NGCs exhibit longer recovery period and high cost limiting their clinical applications. Additive manufacturing (AM) could be an alternative to the existing drawbacks of the conventional NGCs fabrication methods. The emergence of the AM technique has offered

Histochemical analysis of the biphasic properties of formalin pain-induced behavior.

The formalin test has been established as a method for evaluating mouse models of pain. Although there have been numerous reports of formalin-pain-induced behavior, few reports of a detailed histochemical analysis of the central nervous system focus on behavioral biphasic properties. To investigate the alternation of spinal neuronal activity with formalin-induced pain, we performed immunofluorescent staining with c-Fos antibodies as neuronal activity markers using acute pain model mice induced by 2% formalin stimulation. As a result, phase-specific expression patterns were observed. In the spi

Deep learning for sleep analysis on children with sleep-disordered breathing: Automatic detection of mouth breathing events.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) can range from habitual snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A common characteristic of SDB in children is mouth breathing, yet it is commonly overlooked and inconsistently diagnosed. The primary aim of this study is to construct a deep learning algorithm in order to automatically detect mouth breathing events in children from polysomnography (PSG) recordings. METHODS: The PSG of 20 subjects aged 10-13 years were used, 15 of which had reported snoring or presented high snoring and/or high OSA values by scoring conducted by a sleep tec

Brain Functional Representation of Highly Occluded Object Recognition.

Recognizing highly occluded objects is believed to arise from the interaction between the brain's vision and cognition-controlling areas, although supporting neuroimaging data are currently limited. To explore the neural mechanism during this activity, we conducted an occlusion object recognition experiment using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). During magnet resonance examinations, 66 subjects engaged in object recognition tasks with three different occlusion degrees. Generalized linear model (GLM) analysis showed that the activation degree of the occipital lobe (inferior occipit

Psychological distress modulates dorsal anterior cingulate cortex responses to salient stimuli in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) experience an exacerbation of symptoms under psychological distress. The neurobiological underpinnings of this effect of stress remain elusive. Here, we induced psychological distress to explore its effect on neural reactivity of the salience network during a symptom provocation task. METHODS: Twenty-three patients with OCD and twenty-three healthy volunteers underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning after stress induction and a control condition in a cross-over design. Psychological distress was induced using the so

A gecko-inspired robot with CPG-based neural control for locomotion and body height adaptation.

Today's gecko-inspired robots have shown the ability of omnidirectional climbing on slopes with a low centre of mass. However, such an ability cannot efficiently cope with bumpy terrains or terrains with obstacles. In this study, we developed a gecko-inspired robot (Nyxbot) with an adaptable body height to overcome this limitation. Based on an analysis of the skeletal system and kinematics of real geckos, the adhesive mechanism and leg structure design of the robot were designed to endow it with adhesion and adjustable body height capabilities. Neural control with exteroceptive sensory feedbac

Auditory-limbic-cerebellum interactions and cognitive impairments in noise-induced hearing loss.

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the neural substrate of hearing loss-related central nervous system in rats and its correlation with cognition. METHODS: We identified the neural mechanism for these debilitating abnormalities by inducing a bilateral hearing loss animal model using intense broadband noise (122 dB of broadband noise for 2 h) and used the Morris water maze test to characterize the behavioral changes at 6 months post-noise exposure. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was conducted to clarify disrupted functional network using bilateral auditory cortex (ACx) as a seed.

Fronto-parietal and temporal brain dysfunction in depression: A fMRI investigation of auditory mismatch processing.

Mismatch responses reflect neural mechanisms of early cognitive processing in the auditory domain. Disturbances of these mechanisms on multiple levels of neural processing may contribute to clinical symptoms in major depression (MD). A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was conducted to identify neurobiological foundations of altered mismatch processing in MD. Twenty-five patients with major depression and 25 matched healthy individuals completed an auditory mismatch paradigm optimized for fMRI. Brain activity during mismatch processing was compared between groups. Moreover, se

Can We Better Understand How Zika Leads to Microcephaly? A Systematic Review of the Effects of the Zika Virus on Human Brain Organoids.

BACKGROUND: The innovative human brain organoid model represents a unique opportunity to better understand the genesis of congenital brain abnormalities, particularly microcephaly, caused by Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during early pregnancy. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to investigate how ZIKV leads to microcephaly in a novel experimental model that mimics early brain development. Studies were gathered by searching MEDLINE/Pubmed, LILACS, and LiSSa for reports on effects of ZIKV infection on human brain organoids. From 146 identified papers, 13 articles were selected for review

Fairness decisions in response to emotions: a functional MRI study among criminal justice-involved boys with conduct disorder.

Research suggests that individuals with conduct disorder (CD) are marked by social impairments, such as difficulties in processing the affective reactions of others. Little is known, though, about how they make decisions during social interactions in response to emotional expressions of others. In this study, we therefore investigated the neural mechanisms underlying fairness decisions in response to communicated emotions of others in aggressive, criminal justice-involved boys with CD (N = 32) compared with typically developing (TD) boys (N = 33), aged 15-19 years. Participants received writte

Effects of ANK3 variation on gray and white matter in bipolar disorder.

The single-nucleotide polymorphism rs9804190 in the Ankyrin G (ANK3) gene has been reported in genome-wide association studies to be associated with bipolar disorder (BD). However, the neural system effects of rs9804190 in BD are not known. We investigated associations between rs9804190 and gray and white matter (GM and WM, respectively) structure within a frontotemporal neural system implicated in BD. A total of 187 adolescent and adult European Americans were studied: a group homozygous for the C allele (52 individuals with BD and 56 controls) and a T-carrier group, carrying the high-risk T

Alterations in gray matter volume due to unilateral hearing loss.

Although extensive research on neural plasticity resulting from hearing deprivation has been conducted, the direct influence of compromised audition on the auditory cortex and the potential impact of long durations of incomplete sensory stimulation on the adult cortex are still not fully understood. In this study, using voxel-based morphometry, we evaluated gray matter (GM) volume changes that may be associated with reduced hearing ability and the duration of hearing impairment in 42 unilateral hearing loss (UHL) patients with acoustic neuromas compared to 24 normal controls. We found signific

Dysfunctional feedback processing in adolescent males with conduct disorder.

Abnormalities in neural feedback-processing systems may play a role in the development of dysfunctional behavior in individuals diagnosed with conduct disorder (CD). The present study investigated the relation between CD adolescents and feedback processing by measuring event-related potentials (ERPs) in a single outcome gambling task, which included reward valence (loss and gain) and reward magnitude (10 and 50cents) as outcomes. N2 and P3 components have been established as effective indicators in studies of behavioral disinhibition, reward processing, and decision-making. Eighteen adolescent

Posterior vertebral column subtraction osteotomy for the treatment of tethered cord syndrome: review of the literature and clinical outcomes of all cases reported to date.

Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is a debilitating condition of progressive neurological decline caused by pathological, longitudinal traction on the spinal cord. Surgical detethering of the involved neural structures is the classic method of treatment for lumbosacral TCS, although symptomatic retethering has been reported in 5%-50% of patients following initial release. Subsequent operations in patients with complex lumbosacral dysraphic lesions are fraught with difficulty, and improvements in neurological function are modest while the risk of complications is high. In 1995, Kokubun described an

Early diagnosis of spina bifida: the value of cranial ultrasound markers.

Ultrasonography plays an integral part in the prenatal diagnosis of neural tube defects. However, experienced sonographers with careful evaluation are successful in accurately diagnosing spina bifida only 80-90% of the time. This study was conducted to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of certain cranial ultrasound markers--the "lemon sign," cerebellar abnormalities, microcephaly, and ventriculomegaly--in facilitating the diagnosis of spina bifida in patients referred for prenatal diagnosis. Open spina bifida was diagnosed in 24 of 44 fetuses found to have neural tube defects. The lemon si

Control of human airway smooth muscle: in vitro studies.

An in vitro study of neural and myogenic control of human tracheal smooth muscle was undertaken. Over 80% of these had active tension and 13% had phasic contractile activity. Tonic and phasic activities were not reversed by indomethacin, 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraynoic acid, methysergide, mepyramine, atropine, or tetrodotoxin (TTX) but were blocked by the calcium antagonist verapamil. In some quiescent strips, tonic and/or phasic activity was induced by exposure to potassium-conductance blockers such as 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) and tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA). The organizational role of ovarian hormones during puberty on risk for binge-like eating in rats.

Puberty is a high-risk period for the development of dysregulated eating, including binge eating. While risk for binge eating in animals and humans increases in both males and females during puberty, the increased prevalence is significantly greater in females. Emerging data suggest that the organizational effects of gonadal hormones may contribute to the female preponderance of binge eating. In this narrative review, we discuss studies conducted in animals that have examined these organizational effects as well as the neural systems that may serve as intermediary mechanisms. Relatively few st
