Nutritional survey in an iron- and folate-deficient population.

A high prevalence of folate and iron-deficiency anemia was found in women and children of Kiryat Shmoneh, an Upper Galilee community. Malnutrition was assumed to be partially responsible for these deficiencies. To verify this assumption, a detailed nutrition survey was carried out in 30 families, comprising 232 individuals in this community. A low overall caloric intake was found in 30% of the population studied. The dietary folates consumed were much below the recommended dietary allowance in all subjects. In over 60% of the subjects investigated, the daily iron intake was also below the reco

Metabolic complexity and nutritional reductionism. Deconstructing the single active ingredient paradigm in protein and amino acid supplements.

Metabolism is an adaptive and highly interconnected system in which biological outcomes emerge from dynamic interactions among genes, proteins, metabolites, signaling pathways, microbiota, and environmental factors. Nevertheless, nutritional research has traditionally relied on a reductionist paradigm, attributing biological effects to isolated compounds acting on specific molecular targets through linear cause-effect relationships. While this approach has been instrumental in elucidating biochemical mechanisms and addressing nutrient deficiencies, its explanatory and predictive power is limit

The EduNutriCRC Questionnaire: A Pilot Knowledge-Attitudes-Practices Study on Nutritional Prevention of Colorectal Cancer in Romanian Adults.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Colorectal cancer (CRC) disproportionately affects Romania, where mortality exceeds the EU average and screening uptake remains low. Diet is among the most modifiable CRC risk factors, yet no validated instrument for assessing nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to CRC prevention exists for the Romanian population. We developed and pilot-tested the EduNutriCRC questionnaire and characterised the corresponding nutritional KAP profile of Romanian adults. METHODS: In a cross-sectional pilot study (April-May 2026), a convenience sample of 301 Roman

Changes in phenolic profile, physicochemical properties and sensory attributes of steamed bread fortified with golden kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) flour during processing.

BACKGROUND: Chinese steamed bread (CSB) is a traditional East Asian staple. Its texture and nutrition depend on the gluten and starch content of the wheat flour that it contains. Incorporation of golden kiwifruit, which is rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and phenolic antioxidants, offers a novel fortification strategy. It may improve dough functionality and sensory attributes and provide nutritional benefits while utilizing kiwifruit waste. RESULTS: Increasing kiwifruit powder levels (0 - 500 g kg-1) significantly reduced protein and starch content, affecting the water absorption, mixing ti

From Kitchen to Clinic: Study protocol for a family-centered, food-as-medicine approach using medically tailored meals and caregiver coaching in pediatric oncology care.

BACKGROUND: Children undergoing cancer treatment are at high risk for malnutrition, poor diet quality, and early cardiometabolic risk due to treatment-related side effects, disrupted appetite, and household-level barriers to healthy eating. Caregivers play a central role in nutritional support during treatment but often experience substantial burden, time constraints, and nutrition insecurity. Food-as-medicine strategies, including medically tailored meals (MTMs), have shown promise in adult populations but remain underexplored in pediatric oncology, particularly during active treatment and wi…

Allergy-Aware Protocol for Blenderized Tube Feeding Initiation in Children With Severe Motor and Intellectual Disability.

BACKGROUND: Blenderized tube feeding (BTF) provides nutritional and psychosocial benefits for children requiring long-term enteral nutrition. However, BTF has been reportedly associated with food allergies, including anaphylaxis. Standardized protocols that consider food allergies in BTF initiation are currently unavailable for children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID). Thus, this study aimed to develop a structured, allergy-aware BTF initiation protocol tailored for patients with SMID receiving exclusive enteral nutrition. METHODS: This research included eight children

The prognostic value of the neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in chronic kidney disease: A retrospective cohort study using NHANES 1999 to 2018.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health challenge associated with elevated all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, driven by chronic inflammation and malnutrition. The neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR), integrating inflammatory, and nutritional markers, has shown prognostic value in other conditions but remains underexplored in CKD. This study aimed to evaluate the association between NPAR and mortality outcomes in CKD patients using a nationally representative cohort. Data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999 to 2018 were analyzed, including 19

Nutrigenomics and Epigenetic Regulation in Cancer Prevention: Molecular Mechanisms, Dietary Bioactives, and Translational Perspectives.

Cancer development is influenced not only by genetic alterations but also by epigenetic dysregulation driven by environmental and lifestyle factors, particularly diet. Nutrigenomics investigates how dietary components interact with the genome to influence gene expression, while nutritional epigenetics focuses on diet-induced modifications such as DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNA regulation. Increasing evidence indicates that bioactive dietary compounds can modulate epigenetic mechanisms involved in carcinogenesis, highlighting their potential role in cancer prevention.

Nutritional Prevention of Oxidative Stress-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Pediatric Cardio-Oncology: Molecular Mechanisms and Translational Perspectives-A Narrative Review.

Cancer therapy-related cardiotoxicity has emerged as a major challenge in contemporary oncology, particularly in long-term survivors of childhood malignancies. Oxidative stress (OS)-induced cardiotoxicity represents a key mechanistic pathway underlying myocardial injury caused by numerous anti-neoplastic drugs, most notably anthracycline-based chemotherapy, while OS also critically contributes to radiotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity. Excessive reactive oxygen and nitrogen species generation promotes mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired calcium homeostasis, lipid peroxidation, endothelial injury,
