Invasive squamous cell carcinoma arising from asymptomatic choristomatous cysts of the orbit. Two cases and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Epithelial choristomatous cysts are common orbital lesions, the most frequent of which are dermoid or epidermoid tumors. Massive enlargement or extraorbital extension of these benign lesions may occur. Malignant transformation of the epithelial lining of epidermoid cysts is rarely reported. METHODS: Two patients are presented in whom the epithelial lining of a previously asymptomatic choristomatous cyst of the orbit underwent malignant transformation to produce invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The unusual origin and clinical presentation of the lesions caused a delay in the diagn…

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the orbit in a 15-month-old child. Nine-year survival after local excision.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are extremely rare orbital tumors that carry a poor prognosis despite wide excision with disfiguring surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. The authors present the youngest reported case, a 15-month-old boy who underwent an orbitotomy to excise a bilobed tumor from the right orbit. FINDINGS: Histologic examination revealed a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor; standard treatment options, including orbital exenteration, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, were denied and instead the patient was followed with serial computed tomography scan…

Resolution of Vertical Gaze Following a Delayed Presentation of Orbital Floor Fracture With Inferior Rectus Entrapment: The Contributions of Charles E. Iliff and Joseph S. Gruss in Orbital Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Orbital floor fractures occur commonly as a result of blunt trauma to the face and periorbital region. Orbital floor fractures with a "trapdoor" component allow both herniation and incarceration of contents through a bone defect into the maxillary sinus as the bone rebounds faster than the soft tissue, trapping muscle, fat, and fascia in the fracture site. In children, the fractured floor, which is often hinged on one side, tends to return toward its original anatomical position due to the incomplete nature of the fracture and elasticity of the bone. The entrapment of the inferio…

Evolution of Bandeau Shape, Orbital Morphology, and Craniofacial Twist after Fronto-Orbital Advancement for Isolated Unilateral Coronal Synostosis: A Case-Control Study of 2-Year Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The authors' purpose was to quantify the change in unicoronal synostosis symmetry between presentation (time 0), after fronto-orbital advancement (time 1), and 2 years later (time 2). METHODS: Bandeau/orbital symmetry ratios and skull base/midface twists were measured on computed tomographic scans of consecutive isolated unicoronal synostosis patients. Comparisons were made across three time points and against normal controls. RESULTS: Forty-three unicoronal synostosis patients and 36 controls were included. The mean bandeau ratio (symmetry = 1) changed from 0.76 (time 0), to 1.1…

Impact of diabetes mellitus on procedural and one year clinical outcomes following treatment of severely calcified coronary lesions with the orbital atherectomy system: A subanalysis of the ORBIT II study.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of the study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of the coronary orbital atherectomy system to treat severe coronary artery calcification (CAC) prior to stent placement in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. BACKGROUND: The ORBIT II study reported the safety and efficacy of orbital atherectomy treatment in 443 patients with severe CAC. Percutaneous coronary intervention in diabetic patients is associated with an increased risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) compared with non-diabetics. The outcomes of diabetic patients who undergo orbital atherectomy are un…

A Symmetry-Reduced Differentiable Neural Information Field for Geometric Angle-Only Trackability Assessment Across Walker Low-Earth-Orbit Sensor Constellations.

Persistent angle-only tracking with Walker low-Earth-orbit constellations requires repeated geometric assessment, but optimal sensor-subset selection is computationally costly. To support efficient assessment, a symmetry-reduced differentiable neural information field is proposed to approximate the A-optimal potential of the best feasible sensor subset of a prescribed size. Its two-stage network replaces absolute time with bounded phases derived from axial and finite-permutation symmetries of a relative-periodic Walker constellation under J2. For a 25×25 constellation, symmetry reduction decre…

Theoretical insights into site-specific heavy-atom effects on MR-TADF emitters: modulation of spin-orbit coupling and color purity.

Introducing heavy atoms is a promising strategy to enhance triplet-to-singlet upconversion in multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials. By bolstering spin-orbit coupling (SOC), this approach suppresses triplet-triplet annihilation and consequently alleviates efficiency roll-off in devices. However, the embedded heavy atoms at different sites often exert a dual influence on both the SOC and the color purity. This study systematically investigates three types of heavy-atom-embedded MR-TADF emitters derived from a QAO core, with modifications at the bay positio…

In-Orbit MapAnything: An Enhanced Feed-Forward Metric Framework for 3D Reconstruction of Non-Cooperative Space Targets Under Complex Lighting.

Precise 3D reconstruction of non-cooperative space targets is a prerequisite for active debris removal and on-orbit servicing. However, this task is impeded by severe environmental challenges. Specifically, the limited dynamic range of visible light cameras leads to frequent overexposure or underexposure under extreme space lighting. Compounded by sparse textures and strong specular reflections, these factors significantly constrain reconstruction accuracy. While existing general-purpose feed-forward models such as MapAnything offer efficient inference, their geometric recovery capabilities de…

Alloying-Controlled Tuning of Interfacial Spin-Orbit Interaction and Magnetic Damping in Crystalline FeCo Thin Films Grown on GaAs(001).

The discovery of intrinsic spin-orbit fields in non-centrosymmetric ferromagnets have attracted considerable interest for both fundamental studies and technological applications. However, once such materials are synthesized, the strength of the spin-orbit fields is difficult to tune because it is primarily a bulk property. Here, we demonstrate that the interfacial spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in single-crystalline Fe1- xCox thin films grown on GaAs(001) can be continuously tuned via alloying. Using spin-orbit ferromagnetic resonance, we find that the Landé g-factor, the Gilbert damping α, and …

Simultaneous Treatment of Electron Correlation and Spin-Orbit Coupling with State-Averaged Driven Similarity Renormalization Group Second-Order Perturbation Theory.

We report the state-averaged spin-orbit driven similarity renormalization group second-order perturbation theory (SA-SO-DSRG-PT2) for efficient computations of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects in multireference systems. This approach adopts a set of multiconfigurational reference states obtained with a spin-free relativistic Hamiltonian and introduces SOC during the perturbative treatment of dynamical correlation. Specifically, the zeroth-order Hamiltonian is defined from the spin-free Hamiltonian, while the remaining spin-free contributions and the spin-dependent Hamiltonian enter as first-o…

Macrocyclic Steric Confinement at Heavy-Atom Sites to Suppress Spin-Orbit Coupling for Room-Temperature Spin Transport in Organic Semiconductors.

Electron spin transport in organic semiconductors (OSCs) at room temperature is fundamentally limited by an intrinsic trade-off between spin diffusion and spin relaxation, arising from spin-orbit coupling associated with heavy atoms in conjugated backbones. Here, we demonstrate that macrocyclic steric confinement at heavy-atom sites unlocks a previously inaccessible spin-transport regime in OSCs, in which efficient spin diffusion and long-lived spin coherence intrinsically coexist. Employing a previously reported macrocyclic-confined thiophene-based OSC as a model system, we show that a covale…

Magnetism of transition-metal-doped tetrel nanoclusters: multi-reference character and spin-orbit effects in Sn12TM (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe).

The magnetic behavior of endohedrally transition-metal-doped tetrel clusters Sn12TM (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe) was investigated using a combined expe … gnificant increase in the g-factor compared to the value of the free electron due to the large spin-orbit coupling constant of Sn. As a result, in contrast to Sn12Mn and Sn12Cr, the spin density of Sn12Fe is strongly delocalized over the entire cluster framework.

Probing the magnetic ground state of stretched diamond lattices NdTaO4and NdNbO4: impact of spin-orbit coupling and crystal electric field.

Magnetic systems, wherein competing degree of freedoms arising from spin orbit coupling and crystal electric field lead to non-trivial magnetic ground states, remains in the forefront of research in condensed matter physics. Here, we present a comprehensive investigation on three-dimensional rare-earth based spin systems NdTaO4and NdNbO4, where the Nd ions sit on a stretched diamond lattice. No signatures of long-range ordering and spin freezing are observed down to 1.8 K, in both cases. The low temperature Curie-Weiss analysis indicate towards the dominance of antiferromagnetic interactions b…

Customizing the optical, electronic and transport attributes of lead-free hybrid FASnBr3 perovskites triggered by spin-orbit coupling and strains.

Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites are emerging as promising materials for solar energy due to their unique structures and electronic properties. However, the commonly studied MAPbI3 and FAPbI3 are toxic and less stable, prompting the necessity for safer replacements. Using the density functional theory (DFT), this study explored the effects of strains and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on Sn-based FASnBr3 perovskites and the accuracy and validity of the obtained results were confirmed with the existing experimental results. The FASnBr3 perovskites paraded direct bandgaps of 1.20 eV withou…

A Cost-Effective Treatment of Spin-Orbit Couplings in the State-Averaged Driven Similarity Renormalization Group Second-Order Perturbation Theory.

We present an economical approach to treat spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the state-averaged driven similarity renormalization group second-order perturbation theory (SA-DSRG-PT2). The electron correlation is first introduced by forming the SA-DSRG-PT2 dressed spin-free Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian is then augmented with the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian and diagonalized using spin-pure reference states to obtain the SOC-corrected energy spectrum. The spin-orbit mean-field approximation is also assumed to reduce the cost associated with the two-electron spin-orbit integrals. The resulting method is t…

13C Chemical Shift of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Coinage Metal(I) Complexes and Clusters: trans-Influence and Spin-Orbit Coupling.

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are versatile ligands in organometallic chemistry, prized for their strong σ-donating and tunable electronic … s lead to greater deshielding of δiso through enhanced paramagnetic contributions and, for Au, spin-orbit contributions of comparable magnitude. Moreover, a correlation between the spin-orbit contribution to the chemical shift (σso) and the Au-carbene bond distance highlights the critical role of trans-influence in modulating spin-orbit coupling and the …

A rare case of glomus tumor of uncertain malignant potential of orbit with BRAF oncogenic mutation in a young female.

A 21-year-old woman presented with progressive proptosis of the right eye with blurring of vision for the past 6 months. MRI showed an intra-orbital lesion that was T1 isointense, T2 hyperintense, and well enhancing on contrast. The patient underwent right frontal craniotomy, superior orbitotomy, and decompression of the lesion. Histopathology showed a glomus tumor with increased mitotic figures, consistent with a glomus tumor of uncertain malignant potential (GT-UMP). GT-UMP has an aggressive behavior that requires the need for adjuvant therapy following surgical excision. BRAF V600E mutation…
