Expression of Siglec-9 in peripheral blood neutrophils was increased and associated with disease severity in patients with AECOPD.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis and treatment strategies for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) require further exploration. Abnormal neutrophil inflammation and the overexpression of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are closely associated with acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD). Siglec-9, a specific receptor expressed on neutrophils that inhibits their function, prompted us to investigate its relationship with NETs found in induced sputum and the severity of the disease. METHODS: We collected clinical data from patients with AECOPD and assessed the expression of Siglec-9 in per

The association between Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) symptoms and disease severity in people with Cystic Fibrosis (pwCF).

BACKGROUND: The hallmarks of Cystic fibrosis (CF), chronic infection and inflammation, require intensive daily treatment to maintain and improve quality of life and outcome. The incidence of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is increased in chronic inflammatory diseases. Previous studies suggested that the prevalence of ADHD in people with CF (pwCF) is higher than in the general population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between ADHD symptoms and parameters of CF disease severity, measured by demographic and clinical data. METHODS: Based on our previ

Are enterococcal bloodstream infections an independent risk factor for a poorer 5-year survival or just a marker for severity of illness?-The Munich multicentric enterococci cohort.

The present study provides a substantial contribution to literature, showing that patients with enterococcal bloodstream infections (BSI) have a lower survival rate than those with Escherichia coli (E. coli) bloodstream infections after adjusting for 17 limiting prognostic factors and excluding patients with a limited life expectancy [metastatic tumor disease, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) (greater than or equal to) 5]. This difference in the 5-year long-term survival was mainly driven by Enterococcus faecium (ECFM) bloodstream infections, with vancomycin resistance not being a significant

Residual Lung Abnormalities in Survivors of Severe or Critical COVID-19 at One-Year Follow-Up Computed Tomography: A Narrative Review Comparing the European and East Asian Experiences.

The literature reports that there was a significant difference in the medical impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic between European and East Asian countries; specifically, the mortality rate of COVID-19 in Europe was significantly higher than that in East Asia. Considering such a difference, our narrative review aimed to compare the prevalence and characteristics of residual lung abnormalities at one-year follow-up computed tomography (CT) after severe or critical COVID-19 in survivors of European and East Asian countries. A literature search was performed to identify articles

The association of urinary epidermal growth factors with ADPKD disease severity and progression.

BACKGROUND: The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway is involved in kidney tissue repair and growth. Preclinical interventional data and scarce human data have suggested a role for this pathway in the pathophysiology of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), while other data have suggested that its activation is causally linked to repair of damaged kidney tissue. We hypothesize that urinary EGFR ligands, as a reflection of EGFR activity, are associated with kidney function decline in ADPKD in the context of tissue repair following injury, and as the disease progresses

Associations between Chest CT Abnormalities and Clinical Features in Patients with the Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by the SFTS virus. It involves multiple organ systems, including the lungs. However, the significance of the lung involvement in SFTS remains unclear. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the clinical findings and abnormalities noted in the chest computed tomography (CT) of patients with SFTS. The medical records of 22 confirmed SFTS patients hospitalized in five hospitals in Nagasaki, Japan, between April 2013 and September 2019, were reviewed retrospectively. Intersti

Content Validation of Clinician-Reported Items for a Severity Measure for CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder.

CDKL5 deficiency disorder (CDD) results in early-onset seizures and severe developmental impairments. A CDD clinical severity assessment (CCSA) was previously developed with clinician and parent-report items to capture information on a range of domains. Consistent with US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines, content validation is the first step in evaluating the psychometric properties of an outcome measure. The aim of this study was to validate the content of the clinician-reported items in the CCSA (CCSA-Clinician). Eight neurologists leading the USA CDD Center of Excellence clinic
