Preventive but Not Therapeutic Topical Application of Local Anesthetics Can Inhibit Experimental Epidermolysis Bullosa Acquisita in Mice.

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) is an autoimmune blistering disorder characterized and caused by autoantibodies against type VII collagen (COL7). Although it has been noticed that EBA in both patients and mice is associated with an increased scratching, it is not clear whether and how the scratching contributes to disease manifestation. Hence, we here aimed to validate this clinical observation and also to investigate the potential contribution of increased scratching in EBA pathogenesis in mice. Longitudinal assessment of scratching behavior revealed an increased frequency of scratching

Self-assembled tacrolimus-loaded lecithin-chitosan hybrid nanoparticles for in vivo management of psoriasis.

Lecithin-chitosan hybrid nanoparticles are emerging as a promising nanocarrier for topical drug delivery. They could achieve a maximized encapsulation of hydrophobic drugs due to the lipophilic nature of lecithin that comprises the core while enhancing retention in the upper skin layers using the positively charged polymeric coat of chitosan. The aim of this study is to incorporate tacrolimus; a hydrophobic anti-proliferative agent into lecithin chitosan hybrid nanoparticles by ethanolic injection technique using a suitable co-solvent to enhance encapsulation of the drug and allow a satisfacto

Curriculum Change Needed: A Decline in Antireflux Surgery in the Pediatric Surgery Fellowship.

BACKGROUND: Case number requirements by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) have recently changed in general surgery residency and pediatric surgery fellowship. Overall, pediatric surgery fellowship case volumes remain high, but there may be limited exposure to many index cases. We hypothesize that pediatric antireflux surgery is decreasing nationally, and this trend is independent of the fluctuating number of pediatric surgery fellows. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of publicly available ACGME case reports from 2003 to 2018 was performed. Both open and laparosco

Best Practices for Progressive Return to Activity after Concussion: Lessons Learned from a Prospective Study of U.S. Military Service Members.

Primary care providers can play a crucial role in the clinical management of concussion. However, many providers lack up-to-date information about best practices for rest and return to activity after these injuries. Most research on this topic has been conducted in athletes, and so less is known about how to assist patients with returning to activity in other settings and populations. This article provides a review of best practices for management of progressive return to activity after concussion, with an emphasis on "lessons learned" from the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC)

Validation of an implantable bioink using mechanical extraction of human skin cells: First steps to a 3D bioprinting treatment of deep second degree burn.

Clinical grade cultured epithelial autograft (CEA) are routinely used to treat burns covering more than 60% of the total body surface area. However, although the epidermis may be efficiently repaired by CEA, the dermal layer, which is not spared in deep burns, requires additional treatment strategies. Our aim is to develop an innovative method of skin regeneration based on in situ 3D bioprinting of freshly isolated autologous skin cells. We describe herein bioink formulation and cell preparation steps together with experimental data validating a straightforward enzyme-free protocol of skin cel
