This part examines the symptoms and diseases of neurotics with either a schizoid (38) or a hysterical (70) personality structure, comprising 5% and 10% respectively of the first admissions in 7 years. Compared to the hysterical structure, schizoids more frequently show the following characteristics: they are men and have as their secondary component a mixed character structure, an earlier age of onset, a longer duration of illness but earlier referral for psychotherapy. They suffer mainly from psychic symptoms--depressive states and contact difficulties as the indicating signs. Further complai

BACKGROUND: Access to palliative care is often limited for challenging and vulnerable groups, including persons with substance use disorders. However, with optimized healthcare options and liberal substitution policies, this patient group is likely to increase over the upcoming years, and comorbidities will also influence the need for palliative support. Here, we aim at analyzing characteristics and specific challenges associated with substance use disorders (SUD) in palliative care.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all patients diagnosed with substance use disorder that were treated at o

Structured clinical interviews are the gold standard for identifying borderline personality disorder (BPD) in research. No self-report instrument has been validated as a replacement tool for BPD diagnosis. However, clinical interviews can be time and cost-intensive, limiting their utility as appropriate screening tools. Also, data are lacking regarding the level of training and education interviewers need to use BPD screening instruments effectively. The goal of this project was to clarify best practices for brief screening interviews to identify potential research participants with BPD. We an

This study addresses the need for an examination of the criterion validity of a highly popular self-report instrument which is used to gain a quick first impression of personality dysfunction: the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0). To this end, the relationship between LPFS-BF 2.0 scores and SCID-5-AMPD-I scores rated by trained clinicians was investigated in a clinical Norwegian sample (N = 155). Moreover, we investigated the relationship between the Norwegian version of the LPFS-BF 2.0 and other self-report instruments (the WSAS, GAD-7, and PHQ-9). Correlati

The Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM) assesses the Boldness, Meanness, and Disinhibition dimensions of psychopathy. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Persian TriPM in university students (n = 941, aged 18-67, Mage = 28.36, SD = 9.09; 39.1 % male) and a male clinical sample (n = 188, aged 18-65, Mage = 35.05, SD = 10.75) in Iran. Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) supported the original three-factor model only in the clinical sample, though with notable instances of poor item functioning (e.g., low loadings and high cross-loadings). In the students' sample

In recent decades, the conceptualization of internalizing problems has changed from categorical to dimensional and hybrid approaches. However, most studies have analyzed the structure of internalizing problems at the disorder level using categorical or dimensional approaches, with only a few studies examining the structure at the symptom level, or considering a hybrid approach. This study aimed to compare categorical (latent class analysis), dimensional (confirmatory factor analysis), and hybrid models (semi-parametric factor analysis) of internalizing constructs at the symptom level regarding

OBJECTIVE: The diagnostic efficiency of screening instruments for adolescents with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)-that are applicable to its new classification in DSM-5 and ICD-11-has not yet been sufficiently studied.
METHODS: We examined the reliability and diagnostic efficiency of the juvenile version of the Impulsivity and Emotion Dysregulation Scale (IES-27-J) in a German-speaking sample of inpatient 12-19-year-old adolescents (N = 220, including n = 88 with BPD and n = 132 with other mental disorders). Using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, optimal cutoff value

We explored subjective well-being in two groups of young adult participants diagnosed with either schizotypal disorder (Sd) (n = 29) or Asperger syndrome/autism spectrum disorder (As/ASD) (n = 22). Well-being was impaired in both groups and was lower in the Sd group than in the As/ASD group. Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between well-being and the presence of self-disorders. The negative effect of self-disorders on well-being was still significant when adjusted for diagnosis, age and gender, and level of function. The present findings point toward clinically important disorder-

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) neurofeedback training of amygdala hemodynamic activity directly targets a neurobiological mechanism, which contributes to emotion regulation problems in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it remains unknown which outcome measures can assess changes in emotion regulation and affective instability, associated with amygdala downregulation in a clinical trial. The current study directly addresses this question. Twenty-four female patients with a DSM-IV BPD diagnosis underwent four runs of amygdala neurofeedback. Before and after

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and explore mental health nurses' responses to and experience of an educational intervention to improve attitudes towards people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Report findings are concordant with relevant EQUATOR guidelines (STROBE and COREQ).
BACKGROUND: Attitudes towards people with a diagnosis of BPD are poorer than for people with other diagnoses. There is limited evidence about what might improve this situation. One intervention with reportedly good effect uses an underlying biosocial model of BPD. No previous intervention has

INTRODUCTION: Most studies on the epidemiology of personality disorders (PDs) have been conducted in high-income countries and may not represent what happens in most part of the world. In the last decades, population growth has been concentrated in low- and middle-income countries, with rapid urbanization, increasing inequalities and escalation of violence. Our aim is to estimate the prevalence of PDs in the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area, one of the largest megacities of the world. We examined sociodemographic correlates, the influence of urban stressors, the comorbidity with other mental disord

OBJECTIVES: Smoking rates in people with mental illness in Australia remain alarmingly high whilst they have been declining in the general population. This study reviews a smoking cessation programme in a mental health service, as a pilot for future studies and program development. We aim to assess the effectiveness of this intervention and the ease of implementation after upskilling the clinical workforce.
METHODS: Part A - a retrospective analysis of patients attending the Smokers' Clinic, (n = 44) over a period of 18 months. Part B - survey of ease of implementation and change in practice

INTRODUCTION: In gambling disorder (GD), impulsivity has been related with severity, treatment outcome and a greater dropout rate. The aim of the study is to obtain an empirical classification of GD patients based on their impulsivity and compare the resulting groups in terms of sociodemographic, clinical and gambling behavior variables.
METHODS: 126 patients with slot machine GD attending the Pathological Gambling Unit between 2013 and 2016 were included. The UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale was used to assess impulsivity, and the severity of past-year gambling behavior was established with t

Individual placement and support (IPS) has not been tested experimentally among people recently housed with a scattered-site Housing First program. Ninety recently housed people were randomized to IPS or usual services. Regression models estimated via GEE were used to compare employment outcomes. Over 8 months of follow-up with good fidelity, fifteen (34 %) people in the IPS group versus nine (22 %) in the control group found competitive employment (p = 0.16). Adjusted odds of obtaining competitive employment were greater in the IPS group (OR 2.42, 95 %CI 1.13-5.16). Other employment outcomes

BACKGROUND: Quality of life is an important outcome measure for patients with psychosis. We investigated whether going into stable symptomatic remission is associated with a more positive development of subjective quality of life (S-QoL) and if different patient characteristics are associated with S-QoL depending on remission status.
METHODS: Three hundred and one patients with a first-episode psychosis were included at baseline. At 10-year follow-up 186 were reassessed. QoL was assessed by Lehman's Quality of Life Interview. Remission was defined according to criteria proposed by the Remissi

OBJECTIVES: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) and social phobia (SP) are common, closely related conditions. Little is known about the underlying processes related to the social discomfort of subjects with AvPD and SP. Both disorders are associated with interpersonal problems. An attachment perspective may shed light on similarities and differences in close relationships between the disorders. The aim of the study was to compare self-reported attachment styles in patients with AvPD and SP. We expected that patients with AvPD would have more attachment anxiety and avoidance and more often a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The bivalent fear of evaluation (BFOE) model suggests that fears of negative evaluation (FNE) and positive evaluation (FPE) are distinct features in social anxiety disorder as well as in non-clinical variations of social anxiety. The constructs can be measured utilizing the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale – Revised (BFNE-R) and the Fear of Positive Evaluation Scale (FPES), respectively. Whereas the distinction between FNE and FPE has been well examined in survey studies, concomitant evidence from laboratory tasks is scarce.
METHODS: The present study tested
