As infection and malnutrition are steadily overcome in the developing world, cardiovascular disease loom large in the profile of morbidity and mortality in these societies. Hypertension, rheumatic heart disease and the cardiomyopathies are already taking their toll and atherosclerosis is certain to pose public health problems soon unless steps are taken now, through attention to known risk factors, to pre-empt or at least minimize its consequences. There are populations in developing countries among whom blood pressure does not appear to rise with age and in whom the prevalence of hypertension

Parasitological and malacological surveys were conducted round a fresh water lake, previously a salted lagoon, in the South of Bénin and leaded to measure prevalence of schistosomiasis. 23 percent of population were found positive for Schistosoma haematobium and 13.4 percent for S. mansoni. Prevalences were different from locality to locality according to beach variations, but mean of parasite density was quite constant. Males were significantly more infected than females and young adults were more infected than children or old individuals. The prevalence distribution among people could be exp

The nature of lymphocyte responses on addition of pokeweed mitogen (PWM) to normal murine spleen cells was studied in low cell density cultures. PWM, over a wide range of concentrations, stimulated proliferation in a set of cells roughly 10-fold smaller than the lymphocyte populations responding to either concanavalin A or lipopolysaccharide. PWM also induced a relatively small number of B lymphocytes in these cultures to mature to Ig-secreting plaque-forming cells (PFC). Proliferative and PFC responses were completely abrogated by T-cell removal from normal spleen cell cultures. Moreover, cel

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder characterised by bone tissue deterioration, leading to reduced bone density and increased susceptibility to fractures. Osteoporosis screening is the process of identifying people with an increased risk of osteoporosis by using risk assessment tools or medical imaging. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends opportunistic risk assessment in women over 65 years or under 65 years with risk factors, though this guideline was last updated in 2017. Regular surveillance of the available evidence is warranted to gauge th

Bacteriophages (phages), viruses that exclusively infect bacteria, coexist with their bacterial hosts across diverse environments at densities exceeding 107 per milliliter in marine surface waters, 108 per milliliter in soils, and 109 per milliliter in the human gut. In contrast, phage lysis of bacterial populations within well-mixed in vitro environments select for the emergence of phage-resistant bacterial mutants, which, in turn, select for host-range expansion phage mutants and, typically, the collapse of phage populations altogether. This gap in outcome raises a question: What enables lon

Monogenean parasites are among the most common ectoparasites of marine fishes and can influence host health, fitness, and population dynamics. Despite their ecological importance, historical data on monogenean prevalence and diversity in marine fish are scarce. Here, we report data from a historical survey of 1,518 fish, representing 242 species across 87 families, collected from the Central California coast to the Gulf of California between 1967 and 1980. Monogeneans were identified from gills, skin, and body openings, and prevalence and mean abundance were analyzed across five depth zones: s

In this article, we integrate the release of Wolbachia-carrying male mosquitoes with chemical insecticide spraying to formulate a coupled model that incorporates mosquito stage structure and malaria transmission dynamics. The model accounts for mating competition influenced by cytoplasmic incompatibility and employs a Holling-II type saturated release mechanism to dynamically match the release intensity of infected male mosquitoes with the density of wild mosquitoes. The study first verifies the positive invariance and boundedness of solutions of the model. It then derives the basic reproducti

Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and treatable infectious disease, yet its eradication remains a global challenge, particularly in the rea … g air pollution in efforts to eliminate tuberculosis, particularly in regions characterized by high population density, severe pollution levels, and a significant TB burden. Targeting air pollution will not only improve the respiratory health but can also strengthen the efforts to control and ultimately eradicate tuberculosis in vulnerable and at-risk populations.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: This review aims to assess the variability in considering hypercholesterolemia for cardiovascular risk stratification in the general population. Recent literature on the integration of hypercholesterolemia into clinical risk scores and its interaction with other risk factors will be explored.
RECENT FINDINGS: The impact of hypercholesterolemia on risk estimation varies among different cardiovascular risk calculators. Elevated lipid levels during early life stages contribute to atherosclerotic plaque development, influencing disease severity despite later treatment initi

Mpox (human mpox) is an opportunistic viral zoonosis that bears a strong resemblance to smallpox. The virus is divided into 2 distinct clade … both hosting and contributing to the spread of Mpox, driven by socio-economic factors such as high population density, widespread illegal wildlife trade, and a continuous rise in air travel. The increasing number of Mpox cases in Asia poses a significant challenge to healthcare systems, especially during times of global economic crisis. Strengthening diagnostic cap …

Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems (DDS) have shown promising results in reversing hepatic fibrosis, a common pathological basis of chronic liver diseases (CLDs), in preclinical animal models. However, none of these nanoparticle formulations has transitioned to clinical usage and there are currently no FDA-approved drugs available for liver fibrosis. This highlights the need for a better understanding of the challenges faced by nanoparticles in this complex disease setting. Here, we have systematically studied the impact of targeting strategy, the degree of macrophage infiltration during

Advances in knowledge about breast cancer risk factors have led to the development of more comprehensive risk models. These integrate information on a variety of risk factors such as lifestyle, genetics, family history, and breast density. These risk models have the potential to deliver more personalised breast cancer prevention. This is through improving accuracy of risk estimates, enabling more effective targeting of preventive options and creating novel prevention pathways through enabling risk estimation in a wider variety of populations than currently possible. The systematic use of risk

Hantaviruses pose a public health concern worldwide causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Puumala virus (PUUV) is the most prevalent hantavirus in Central and Northern Europe, and causes a mild form of HFRS, also known as nephropathia epidemica (NE). In nature, the main host of PUUV is the bank vole (Myodes glareolus), and transmission to humans occurs through inhalation of aerosols from rodent excreta. Nephropathia epidemica is particularly prevalent in Nordic countries, however, few studies of PUUV have been performed in Norway. The ai

Osteoporotic fractures (OFs) are critical hard outcomes of osteoporosis and are characterized by decreased bone strength induced by low bone density and microarchitectural deterioration in bone tissue. Most OFs cause acute pain, hospitalization, immobilization, and slow recovery in patients and are associated with increased mortality. A variety of genetic studies have suggested associations of genetic variants with the risk of OF. Genome-wide association studies have reported various single-nucleotide polymorphisms and copy number variations (CNVs) in European and Asian populations. To identif

Globally, the HIV epidemic is evolving. Life expectancy for HIV-infected individuals has been extended because of more effective and more widely available antiretroviral therapy. As a result, chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have become important comorbid conditions. In particular, HIV-infected persons are increasingly at risk of developing metabolic (diabetes, dyslipidemias), body composition (lipodystrophy, overweight/obesity) and bone mineral density abnormalities. We have summarized the published epidemiological and clinical literature regarding these HIV-NCD comorbidities in low- a

The close emotional tie between people and companion animals is a beneficial relation known as the human-animal bond. However, pet dogs and cats can play an important role in the transmission of helminthic zoonotic agents such as the tapeworms Echinococcus and the roundworms Toxocara which are directly transmitted from pets to the human environment without the involvement of vectors or intermediate hosts. In humans, echinococcosis has emerged in Europe and toxocarosis is still persisting in large endemic areas despite the availability of highly efficient anthelminthics for dogs and cats. Ecolo

From November of 1994 to June of 1996 an epizootic of mange, probably caused by the mite Notoedres cati, occurred in white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) in the tropical dry forests of the Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve in western Mexico. A monitoring scheme to determine the extent and severity of the epizootic within coatis was implemented. Trapping periods and transects were conducted for 2 yr. To control the spread of the disease, all captured infected coatis were either euthanized or treated with acaricides such as Butox and Ivomec-F, depending on the severity of their infection. Four oth

The role of mucosal mast cells (MMC) in chronic non-allergic reactions of the gastric mucosa is unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the reaction of gastric MMC during healing of the acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in the rat. Mast cells were stained with toluidine blue and alcian blue+safranin and their density and distribution were assessed. Morphometry of MMC and documentation of their contact with eosinophils were based on electron microscopy. In the normal non-injured rat oxyntic mucosa MMC are grouped in two populations: MMC1 concentrated near the glandular necks, and MMC2 i

In order to achieve a clear distinction between Hodgkin's disease (HD) and peripheral T cell lymphomas, a microphotometric analysis was made on 5 micron thick sections, by illustrating a nuclear density scattergram (NDS) and a superimposed DNA histogram (S-DNA H) which was composed of cell populations by nuclear size versus DNA content. HD cells (including mononuclear cells, Reed-Sternberg's cells, and lacunar cells) showed the oblique zonal cluster (OZC) on the NDS, indicating their proliferative ability. In particular, the small HD cells in lymphocytic depletion (LD) meant their high prolife
