Adaptive Sports Introduction During Inpatient Rehabilitation: A Descriptive Study.

OBJECTIVES: Adaptive sports (AdS) are sports which have been modified to facilitate the participation of people with disabilities. They have physical, functional, and psychosocial benefits. However, little is known about the role of introduction of AdS in the inpatient setting. The primary objectives of this cross-sectional study are to understand if patients with new disability want to be exposed to AdS in an inpatient setting, and what patient factors correlate with this desire. DESIGN: 100 inpatients were surveyed on their exposure to AdS during the admission. All patients aged 18 or older

Relationship between empathic tendencies and trait anxiety among individuals interested in folk dances.

INTRODUCTION: Folk dances, which are among the most important cultural elements reflecting societies' historical heritage, ways of life, and shared values, are regarded not only as an art form but also as a functional tool that contributes to an individual's psychological well-being. Because they are based on physical activity and involve group participation, they can positively impact empathy and anxiety. The primary objective of this study is to examine the psychosocial characteristics of individuals who participate in folk dances, with a focus on the relationship between empathy and anxiety

Beyond risk factors: A capacity framework for cancer survivorship research.

Cancer survivorship research has identified numerous biological, behavioral, psychosocial, health care, and structural factors that influence recovery. However, these factors are typically studied as separate determinants rather than interacting influences. This commentary proposes available survivorship capacity as a unifying framework that explains how these diverse determinants collectively shape recovery and survivorship outcomes. Concepts from geroscience, health care delivery, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, and human factors science were synthesized to develop a conceptual framewo

Multimorbidity in the modulator era: challenges of managing an ageing cystic fibrosis population.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (CFTR) gene, leading to defective chloride ion transport and multisystem disease. The introduction of CFTR modulators, particularly elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), has significantly improved life expectancy and quality of life for people with CF (pwCF). As survival increases, an aging CF population faces different new challenges. AREAS COVERED: This review aims to highlight emerging challenges and comorbidities in an aging CF population t

Management of Chronic Pain in Elderly Patients: The Central Role of Nurses in Multidisciplinary Care.

Pain is a fundamental yet complex biological and psychosocial phenomenon. While acute pain serves as a defense mechanism, alerting the body to potential tissue damage, chronic pain loses this protective function and becomes a persistent, independent condition. Chronic pain in the elderly is particularly significant due to age-related changes in pain perception, a higher prevalence of comorbidities, and an increased susceptibility to pharmacological side effects. Diagnosing pain in older adults presents unique challenges owing to cognitive decline, multimorbidity, and impaired communication. Th

Accelerating discovery in pain science: the Acute to Chronic Pain Signatures program.

Chronic pain is a complex and multifaceted disease, with biological causes distributed across tissues and bodily systems and influenced by psychological and social factors. A major aim of pain research is to find better ways to measure signals associated with chronic pain and thus predict, track, and treat pain conditions. Emerging biological measures related to the metabolic, immune, and nervous systems hold promise for identifying the physiology underlying pain and developing new treatments. Developing such measures will require multimodal datasets from large samples in combination with meth

Chronic Pelvic Pain in Women: Evaluation and Treatment.

Chronic pelvic pain affects up to 26% of individuals with female anatomy and is defined as at least 6 months of pain that is perceived to originate in the pelvis. Chronic pelvic pain is highly correlated with psychosocial comorbidities, including depression, anxiety, and history of abuse. Although common causes include irritable bowel syndrome, bladder pain syndrome (interstitial cystitis), pelvic floor dysfunction, and endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain is most often the result of multiple coexisting pain conditions and central nervous system hypersensitivity. Evaluation requires a biopsychos

Rehabilitation practices for childhood spinal muscular atrophy.

PURPOSE: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular condition characterized by muscle weakness and impaired motor function. The introduction of disease modifying treatments, such as gene therapy, have significantly improved prognosis. Children with SMA now have the potential for active rehabilitation, but limited evidence exists to guide rehabilitation professionals and families. Our objective was to explore and describe how rehabilitation therapists are approaching this changing landscape, including the challenges and opportunities. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using a dem

Enhancing chronic neck pain management: integrating SFBC and digital mental health screening.

Chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNSNP) and degenerative cervical spondylosis (DCS) are common musculoskeletal disorders that significantly impact quality of life. Current management strategies focus primarily on physical therapies, such as muscle strengthening and postural correction. However, these treatments often overlook the psychological factors that influence pain perception and management. This manuscript proposes an integrated approach combining Solution-Focused Brief Counseling (SFBC) and digital mental health screening tools (such as PHQ-9 and GAD-7) with standard physical treatments

Naso-alveolar Asymmetry in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate Patients-CT Analysis of the Paranasal Region.

Secondary deformities to the midfacial area in adolescence and adulthood are common sequelae after primary cleft lip and palate repair and lead to significant functional, aesthetic and psychosocial challenges. Treatment for patients with normal occlusion or treated malocclusion and remaining midfacial hypoplasia includes autologous and alloplastic augmentation of the maxilla. Because of the great variation of deformities, accurate evaluation is essential for appropriate treatment planning. To provide insights in the altered midfacial anatomy in cleft patients, a retrospective computed tomograp

Gaming passion contributes to the definition and identification of problematic gaming.

Even if for most people playing video games is a healthy leisure activity, a minority of vulnerable users present an excessive use associated to negative consequences (e.g., psychosocial maladjustment, sleep interference) and functional impairment. The current study first aims to identify psychological factors that contribute to discriminate highly involved (but healthy) gamers from problematic gamers. For that purpose, we used a cluster analysis approach to identify different groups of gamers based on their profiles of passion towards gaming (using the Dualistic Model of Passion). Another obj

Clarifying the Differences between Patients with Organic Tics and Functional Tic-Like Behaviors.

Due to the global increase in the number of patients with Functional Tic-Like Behaviors (FTLB), it has become increasingly important to find reliable differences between this patient group and patients with organic tics (OTs), which can be used in differential diagnosis. The purpose of this retrospective study was to critically examine both established and suggested differences between the patient groups. A total of 53 FTLB patients and 200 OT patients were included. Several findings from the current literature were replicated in this study: Compared to patients with OTs, patients with FTLB ha
