Choroidal hemangioma in Sturge-Weber syndrome elucidated by ultra-widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography.

BACKGROUND: Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare congenital phacomatosis disorder. choroidal hemangioma (CH) is one of the most common ocular manifestations. The advancements in swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) provide us a comprehensive view of the CH. Here we present a case of CH in SWS and emphasize the utility of ultra-widefield SS-OCTA imaging for detection of the lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old female complained of vision loss in her right eye received multimodal ophthalmological imaging, including ultra-widefield SS-OCTA. Spectral domain optical

Astrocytes in the mouse brain respond bilaterally to unilateral retinal neurodegeneration.

Glaucomatous optic neuropathy, or glaucoma, is the world's primary cause of irreversible blindness. Glaucoma is comorbid with other neurodegenerative diseases, but how it might impact the environment of the full central nervous system to increase neurodegenerative vulnerability is unknown. Two neurodegenerative events occur early in the optic nerve, the structural link between the retina and brain: loss of anterograde transport in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons and early alterations in astrocyte structure and function. Here, we used whole-mount tissue clearing of full mouse brains to image

Natural products for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic retinal disease that significantly influences the vision of the elderly. PURPOSE: There is no effective treatment and prevention method. The pathogenic process behind AMD is complex, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and neovascularization. It has been demonstrated that several natural products can be used to manage AMD, but systematic summaries are lacking. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched using the keywords "Biological Products" AND "Macular Degeneration" for studie

Progress in the study of association between hematological indicators and retinopathy of prematurity (Review).

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a retinopathy caused by abnormal proliferation of blood vessels in premature infants. It can lead to retinal detachment and, in severe cases, blindness, rendering ROP a critical condition. Advances in neonatal medicine have improved survival rates of low birth weight and low gestational age infants. However, this progress has also led to a rise in incidence of ROP. Currently, premature birth, low birth weight and high postpartum oxygen levels are independent risk factors for ROP. Other factors include mode of delivery, multiple births, anemia, blood transfus

Fine-scale measurement of the blind spot borders.

The blind spot is both a necessity and a nuisance for seeing. It is the portion of the visual field projecting to where the optic nerve crosses the retina, a region devoid of photoreceptors and hence visual input. The precise way in which vision transitions into blindness at the blind spot border is to date unknown. A chief challenge to map this transition is the incessant movement of the eye, which unavoidably smears measurements across space. In this study, we used high-resolution eye-tracking and state-of-the-art retinal stabilization to finely map the blind spot borders. Participants repor

The vascular gene Apold1 is dispensable for normal development but controls angiogenesis under pathological conditions.

The molecular mechanisms of angiogenesis have been intensely studied, but many genes that control endothelial behavior and fate still need to be described. Here, we characterize the role of Apold1 (Apolipoprotein L domain containing 1) in angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro. Single-cell analyses reveal that - across tissues - the expression of Apold1 is restricted to the vasculature and that Apold1 expression in endothelial cells (ECs) is highly sensitive to environmental factors. Using Apold1-/- mice, we find that Apold1 is dispensable for development and does not affect postnatal retinal angio

Case Report: Glaucoma in an Infant With Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood blindness that occurs due to incomplete development of retinal blood vessels in preterm infants. Glaucoma is an ocular comorbidity in some patients with ROP, and it may be associated with immature anterior chamber development, ROP itself, or the treatment for ROP. There have been a few reports of narrow-angle glaucoma after laser treatment for ROP. In this case report, we describe the course of a female infant born at 24 weeks and 5 days of gestational age with treatment-requiring ROP treated with laser photocoagulation who subse

Changes in Plasma VEGF and PEDF Levels in Patients with Central Serous Chorioretinopathy.

Background and Objectives: Retinal pigment epitheliopathy and hyperpermeability of choroidal vessels were postulated to be involved in the pathogenesis of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Imbalanced levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and pigment-epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) were previously implicated in the development of chorioretinal diseases characterized by increased vascular permeability. We aimed to compare the plasma levels of proangiogenic VEGF and antiangiogenic PEDF for 26 patients with acute CSC, 26 patients with chronic CSC, and 19 controls. Materials an

[The Clinical Application of Developmental Care in Retinopathy of Prematurity Eye Examinations].

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a disorder affecting the development of retinal blood vessels in preterm infants. Eye screening examinations are important to the early detection and treatment of ROP. However, several studies have associated eye examinations with pain, stress, and negative physiological effects. Developmental care has been provided as part of neonatal care in recent decades, and some studies indicate that this care positively affects pain scores, stress response, and recovery time during ROP eye screenings. In this article, five elements of developmental care that are appli

Cilioretinal Arteries and Cilioretinal Veins in Eyes with Pathologic Myopia.

We investigated the clinical characteristics of cilioretinal arteries (CAs) and cilioretinal veins (CVs) in eyes with pathologic myopia. Ninety-five eyes with pathologic myopia and CAs were studied. The retrobulbar vessels from which the CAs originated were identified by indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). The results showed that 114 CAs were identified in the 95 eyes. ICGA showed that 60% of the CAs branched directly off the short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCAs) and 40% originated from the Zinn-Haller arterial circle (ZHAC). The SPCA-derived CAs tended to be located superiorly and served

Intravitreal anti-VEGF agents and cardiovascular risk.

Antagonists of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Anti-VEGF) are widely administered by intravitreal injection for the treatment of ocular pathologies such as Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Macular Edema, Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy and occlusion of retinal vessels. Anti-VEGF agents, in particular bevacizumab, were introduced in oncology to inhibit tumor-induced angiogenesis feeding neoplastic tissues. Subsequently, other specific agents were developed for intraocular administration. Whereas systemic administration of anti-VEGF agents in oncology is burdened by increased ri…

A prospective, randomized, double blind study comparing lutein to placebo for reducing occurrence and severity of retinopathy of prematurity.

Lutein has been shown to have antioxidant functions in newborns and with zeaxantin selectively taken up into the macula of the eye. We hypot … ge between groups. Oxidative injury is probably an additional mechanism of damage of the developing retinal vessels, and it probably plays only a minor role in the pathogenesis of ROP. Supplementation with antioxidant substances might have beneficial effects noticeable only on larger samples of high risk neonates or at very high dosage. Further investigations wou …

Thrombosis in Japanese patients with Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is an X-linked lysosomal storage disease resulting from deficient activity of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase (alpha-Gal) A. It has been postulated that the accumulation of globotriaosylceramide in the endothelial cells of blood vessels may lead to thrombosis of the brain and other tissues. Recently, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for Fabry disease is available. A high incidence of thrombotic accidents in Fabry disease has been postulated. However, a systemic study on thrombosis in cases of Fabry disease has not been undertaken. To clarify the incidence of thrombosis in Fabry di

Neuropathology of Cockayne syndrome: Evidence for impaired development, premature aging, and neurodegeneration.

Global growth and development failure, premature, accelerated, pathologic aging, and neurodegeneration characterize Cockayne syndrome (CS) and the cerebro-oculo-facial-skeletal and xeroderma pigmentosum/CS syndromes which overlap CS partially in their genetic, somatic, and neuropathologic features. Mutations of CSA or CSB genes jeopardize transcription-coupled repair of damaged nuclear and mitochondrial DNA and resumption of replication and transcription. Resultant defective proteins or gene silencing eventuate in profound dwarfism and micrencephaly, cachexia, vasculopathy, and neurodegenerati

Siblings with infantile cerebral stroke and delayed multivessel involvement--a new hereditary vasculopathy?

We describe an unusual vasculopathy in two sisters of non-consanguineous parents. The first child developed an acute hemiparesis and focal s … al pulmonary arteries, and stenosis and rarefication of coronary arteries were found; the aorta and retinal vessels were normal. Repeat cranial MRI and MRA showed multiple collaterals, while the carotid and basilar arteries were extremely narrowed (moyamoya appearance). We suggest the diagnosis is a hereditary systemic vasculopathy of unknown origin.
