Sleep Disorders in Medication-Overuse Headache: Prevalence and Associated Factors.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders can exacerbate headache burden, yet their prevalence and reversibility in medication-overuse headache (MOH) remain unexplored. We aimed to evaluate sleep disorders and associated factors in MOH patients compared with controls, and to assess outcomes following headache treatment. METHODS: This prospective case-control study was conducted at a specialised headache center. Patients aged ≥ 18 years with MOH (n = 171; mean age 43.3 years; 81.9% female; migraine 64.9%; tension-type headache 35.1%) and age- and sex-matched headache controls without MOH (n = 173; mean age

Associations between sleep problems, cortical morphometry, and structural brain network organization in preschool children with autism: a retrospective observational study.

UNLABELLED: Sleep problems are highly prevalent in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and may contribute to behavioral challenges and atypical brain development. However, the neuroanatomical mechanisms linking sleep problems and ASD during early childhood remain underexplored. This retrospective observational study included 183 preschool children with ASD, grouped by sleep problem status using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Structural MRI data were processed with FreeSurfer to obtain cortical volume measures across 68 regions. Structural covariance networks were constructed to a

Study of the different sleep disturbances during the prodromal phase of depression and mania in bipolar disorders.

BACKGROUND: One of the challenges in bipolar disorder (BD) lies in early detection of the illness and its recurrences, to improve prognosis. Sleep disturbances (SD) have been proposed as reliable predictive markers of conversion. While preliminary studies have explored the relationship between SD and the onset of mood episodes, the results remain heterogeneous and a few have specifically examined patients' perception of prodromal symptoms and their progression until the episode occurs. Identifying prodromes represents a crucial clinical challenge, as it enables early intervention, thereby redu

The relationship between mental health problems and risk of infectious diseases: A Mendelian randomization analysis.

The causal effects of mental health problems on the risk of infectious diseases remain vague. Investigating them via observational study is challenging as it presents possible confounding factors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to utilize Mendelian randomization (MR) techniques to evaluate the causal relationship between mental health problems and the risk of infectious diseases. Multivariable MR analyses were performed using genome-wide association data for sleep disorders (N = 216,700), depression (N = 500,199), anxiety (N = 290,361), nervous feelings (N = 450,700), unspecified m

Associations of Military Service History and Health Outcomes in the First Five Years After Traumatic Brain Injury.

For many years, experts have recognized the importance of studying traumatic brain injury (TBI) among active-duty service members and veterans. A majority of this research has been conducted in Veterans Administration (VA) or Department of Defense settings. However, far less is known about military personnel who seek their medical care outside these settings. Studies that have been conducted in civilian settings have either not enrolled active duty or veteran participants, or failed to measure military history, precluding study of TBI outcomes by military history. The purpose of the present st

The effect of sleep medications on prospective and retrospective memory: a population-based study.

Sleep medications, especially benzodiazepines, are known to cause motor and cognitive impairments as side-effects from their use. However, an evaluation of the effects of sleep medications in general on prospective and retrospective memory remains to be seen. Thus, the effects of the different types of sleep medicines were assessed using the total score and the 8 subscales of the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ) in a representative sample from the Municipality of São Paulo. The effects of each type of medication on these same parameters were evaluated afterwards. Each

Misdiagnosis and pitfalls in Panayiotopoulos syndrome.

Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS) is a frequent (6% among children of 1-15 years) and benign epileptic syndrome, characterized by predominantly autonomic symptoms (emesis, pallor, flushing, cyanosis, mydriasis/miosis, cardiorespiratory and thermoregulatory alterations, incontinence of urine and/or feces, hypersalivation, and modifications of intestinal motility) associated with simple motor focal seizures, which can be followed by secondary generalization. Panayiotopoulos syndrome can be extremely insidious, because it can mimic several condition, such as gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux d

Can youth at high risk of illness progression be identified by measures of rumination and sleep-wake disturbance.

AIM: Clinical staging models offer a useful framework for understanding illness trajectories, where individuals are located on a continuum of illness progression from stage 0 (at-risk but asymptomatic) to stage 4 (end-stage disease). Importantly, clinical staging allows investigation of risk factors for illness progression with the potential to target trans-diagnostic mechanisms at an early stage, especially in help-seeking youth who often present with sub-threshold syndromes. While depressive symptoms, rumination and sleep-wake disturbances may worsen syndrome outcomes, the role of these rela

Prevalence and correlates of sleep disorder symptoms in psychiatric disorders.

Difficulty falling asleep or maintaining sleep, poor sleep quality, nightmares, and excessive daytime sleepiness are some of the key clinical symptoms of sleep disturbances observed among individuals with psychiatric illnesses. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of symptoms of sleep disorders including parasomnia, narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, circadian rhythm disorder and restless leg syndrome/periodic limb movement (RLS/PLMS) and its correlates in patients with psychiatric diagnoses. Patients aged 21-65 years (n = 400) attending the outpatient clinics with a primary diagnosi

Sleep disturbances in young and middle-aged adults - Empirical patterns and related factors from an epidemiological survey.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that sleep disorders are highly associated with other mental health problems. However, sleep problems even below the diagnostic threshold of sleep disorders are very common in the general population, which highly affects wellbeing and functioning. In order to broaden the focus beyond those severe cases we explored empirical patterns across the whole spectrum of sleep problems as well as associated clinical and other factors. METHOD: A representative community sample of N=1274 residents from the canton of Zurich was interviewed for sleep problems and diag

[Analysis of the problem of addiction in the elderly].

Demographic changes observed in recent decades around the world lead to the aging of societies at a rapid rate. The increasing number of elder people is a result of extending the average length of human life. Elder people are struggling with many problems--loneli- ness, disability or financial problems. The problem can also be addiction, usually suspected in young people. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of addiction--smoking, drinking alcohol, use of medicines and drugs, watching television or using the Internet--in the elderly. Additional objective was to assess the proble

Sleep and breathing in premature infants at 6 months post-natal age.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep contributes to the developmental problems seen in preterm infants. We evaluated sleep problems in preterm infants 6 months of post-gestational age using the subjective Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ) and objective sleep tests. We also compared the sleep of premature infants with that of full-term infants. METHODS: The study included 68 6-month-old full-term healthy infants and 191 premature infants born at <37 weeks gestation. All parents completed the BISQ-Chinese version and sleep diaries. At the same time, all premature infants were submitted to one night of

Histamine H(3) receptor (H(3)R) antagonists and inverse agonists in the treatment of sleep disorders.

After the discovery and characterization of the H(3)R and H(4)R receptors, they have become widely anticipated as potential therapeutic agents in the treatment of sleep disorders. In preliminary studies, histamine H(3) receptor (H(3)R) antagonists and inverse agonists have demonstrated promise in the treatment of sleep disorders associated with excessive daytime sleepiness. This review article summarizes the current research in this area and characteristics of H(3)R and H(3)R antagonists and inverse agonists in development.

Intralingual dermoid cyst in an infant presenting swallowing and sleeping difficulties.

Dermoid cysts of the oral cavity are extremely rare. The most common site is the floor of the mouth whereas intralingual location is the most unusual. They may be congenital or acquired and according to their histological appearance they are distinguished in "true" dermoid, epidermoid or teratoid cysts. We present the clinical and radiographic findings of a large congenital intralingual "true" dermoid cyst in a 10-month-old boy. The large size of the lesion and the subsequent enlargement of the tongue caused difficulties in swallowing and sleeping, symptoms which subsided after the surgical tr

Assessing sleep in opioid dependence: a comparison of subjective ratings, sleep diaries, and home polysomnography in methadone maintenance patients.

OBJECTIVES: Comparisons of subjective and objective sleep measures have shown discrepancies between reported sleep and polysomnography (PSG) in non-drug dependent individuals with and without insomnia. Sleep may affect behavioral and physiologic aspects of drug abuse and dependence; patients in methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) for opioid dependence frequently report sleep problems. Whether subjective sleep reflects objective sleep in MMT patients is unknown. We undertook these analyses to establish the correlations among subjective and objective sleep measures in MMT patients. METHODS: We
