Outdoor motivation moderates the effects of accessibility on mobility in old age.

BACKGROUND: Mobility plays a major role in healthy aging and social participation. This study explored whether accessibility problems in the housing environment are negatively associated with mobility in old age and whether this association is moderated by differences in an individual's preference for spending time outside the home (outdoor motivation). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This article reports the results of a research project on mobility in old age. The project included a survey study of 120 community-dwelling older adults between 59 and 92 years of age (mean = 71.7 years, SD = 7.3 years)

Commentary: Interventions based on learning principles can supplant seclusion and restraint.

Regulatory and administrative imperatives, when paired with staff training in humanistic, verbally mediated interventions can reduce the frequency of seclusion and restraint but can be associated with increases in the frequency and severity of staff injury, with concomitant tension and apprehension in the treatment setting. Even when educational programs for staff are made available for patient-centered, therapeutic, and persuasion-based modes of de-escalation, aggression, destructiveness and self-injury may continue to occur or even increase. Administrative contingencies can lead to less repo

Psychiatric diagnosis and quality of life: the additional burden of psychiatric comorbidity.

OBJECTIVES: To compare quality of life (QoL) in mental health outpatients to non-clinical norms, and examine the associations between QoL and principal diagnosis, number of comorbid Axis I diagnoses, and type of comorbidity. METHODS: Consecutively referred and assessed patients (n = 2024) formed the study sample pool. Of these, 1486 individuals who had completed a QoL instrument at intake and had a principal diagnosis amenable to comparison by group analysis were included in the study. Principal diagnoses were unipolar mood disorder (n = 687), eating disorder (n = 226), bipolar disorder (n =

School failure.

Numerous factors may contribute to a child's failure to learn. Certain causes of school failure, such as specific learning disabilities, mental retardation, sensory impairment, and chronic illness may be regarded as intrinsic characteristics of the child. Other causes, such as family dysfunction, social problems, and ineffective schooling, are characteristics of the child's environment. Still other influences on school performance, such as temperamental dysfunction, attention deficits, and emotional illness, may be viewed as the consequence of the interaction between the child and his or her e

Dyadic synchrony in deaf mothers and hearing infants.

There is mounting evidence that maternal sensitivity contributes to optimal child development, but little is known about dyads including deaf mothers and their hearing infants. Deaf adults experience a range of adversities in their role as a parent, and it is unclear how these experiences influence early interactions with their child. Videos of 28 deaf mothers playing with their four-to-eight-month-old hearing infants were coded using the CARE-Index. Dyadic synchrony of most dyads were found to be sensitive or adequate. However, 21% of dyads were likely to benefit from education and/or interve

[Intercultural Perspective: An Essential Approach in the Prevention and Management of Childhood Obesity].

Childhood obesity is one of the main public health challenges today. As a multi-causal problem, its prevalence is significantly higher in families with a disadvantaged socioeconomic status. In a context marked by growing social inequalities and the rapid increase in the foreign population in Spain, and considering the close relationship between obesity, poverty, and cultural origin, low-income migrant families are particularly affected by this problem. At the Programme for the Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Obesity in Catalonia (POICAT), we consider that incorporating an intercultural p

Diverse Users' Experiences in Gyms: An Exploration of Person-Environment Fit.

People with a disability encounter many barriers in gyms, limiting their opportunities to experience health benefits associated with exercise. To better understand how to develop accessible exercise opportunities, this study examined person-environment interactions from the perspectives of diverse participants as they navigated gyms. A think-aloud protocol involving a series of tasks completed in two gyms was adopted to capture perceptions of accessibility, usability, and inclusion. Directed content analyses of think-aloud transcripts were guided by the Universal Design-based framework. Fourte

Assessing youth's internal and external attributions to negative peer interactions and victimization-development of the Causal Attributions for Peer Experiences (CAPE) scale.

Many youth experience negative behavior from their peers, which can have lasting consequences for their social functioning and well-being. One mechanism through which negative interactions affect youth is causal attributions, that is, the interpretations that they make for why a negative interaction occurred. We present the newly developed CAPE (Causal Attributions for Peer Experiences) scale, which assesses youth's stable internal, unstable internal, stable external, and unstable external attributions for peers' mean behavior. Self-blame (characterological and behavioral) and hostile intent a

Do Sex and Gender Have Separate Identities?

The largely binary nature of biological sex and its conflation with the socially constructed concept of gender has created much strife in the last few years. The notion of gender identity and its differences and similarities with sex have fostered much scientific and legal confusion and disagreement. Settling the debate can have significant repercussions for science, medicine, legislation, and people's lives. The present review addresses this debate though different levels of analysis (i.e., genetic, anatomical, physiological, behavioral, and sociocultural), and their implications and interact

Narrative Review: The Effect of Vitamin A Deficiency on Gut Microbiota and Their Link with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders defined by a lack of social behaviors, repetitive behaviors and nonverbal interactions, such as limited eye contact, facial expression, and body gesturing. It is not a single condition, but rather a multi-factorial disorder caused by hereditary and non-genetic risk factors, as well as their interaction. According to several studies, the gut microbiota may have a role in the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder. Various studies have found differences in the composition of the gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota in chi

Patient considerations in the management of toe onychomycosis - role of efinaconazole.

Onychomycosis is a difficult diagnosis to manage and treatment is sometimes avoided, as this diagnosis is often wrongly perceived as a cosmetic problem. However, onychomycosis has a negative impact on patients' quality of life, affecting social interaction, psychological well-being, and physical activities. Onychomycosis is also a risk factor for patients with diabetes, with proven increased rates of cellulitis, gangrene, and foot ulcers. Treatments are only mild to moderately effective, and rates of relapse and reinfection are high. Oral treatments require laboratory monitoring due to risk of…

Neurexin-neuroligin transsynaptic interaction mediates learning-related synaptic remodeling and long-term facilitation in aplysia.

Neurexin and neuroligin, which undergo heterophilic interactions with each other at the synapse, are mutated in some patients with autism spectrum disorder, a set of disorders characterized by deficits in social and emotional learning. We have explored the role of neurexin and neuroligin at sensory-to-motor neuron synapses of the gill-withdrawal reflex in Aplysia, which undergoes sensitization, a simple form of learned fear. We find that depleting neurexin in the presynaptic sensory neuron or neuroligin in the postsynaptic motor neuron abolishes both long-term facilitation and the associated p

Using gene-environment interactions to target personalized treatment in mood disorder.

Mood disorders account for a substantial social and financial burden on society. Although considerable efforts to delineate the underlying pathophysiological pathways have been undertaken during the last decades, only very limited progress on diagnostic and treatment algorithms have been achieved. High hopes have been put into genetics research to elucidate the pathogenesis of mood disorders, but so far, only small and inconsistent associations could be reported. Epidemiologic and family studies have always emphasized the importance of environmental factors; especially the impact of childhood

The sources and manifestations of stress amongst school-aged dyslexics, compared with sibling controls.

All school children experience stress at some point in their school careers. This study investigates whether dyslexic children, by way of their educational and social difficulties, experience higher levels of stress at school. The School Situation Survey was used to investigate both the sources and manifestations of stress amongst dyslexic children and non-dyslexic sibling controls. Samples were broken down by gender, age and the size of families. Results suggest significant differences between the groups, with dyslexics in academic years 3-5 experiencing the highest stress levels, specificall
