Supportive housing in Brooklyn.

Since 1977, Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers of New York City has been creating and maintaining supportive housing offerings for at-risk populations, such as individuals with HIV/AIDS, those with substance abuse challenges, and the mentally ill. By providing a continuum of medical and social services, the organization aims to help residents stabilize and rebuild their lives. Saint Vincent sees empowerment as a key step toward helping individuals maintain their health, re-enter the community, seek employment, and pursue other goals. Some of the supportive services Saint Vincent offers in

Social anxiety and emotion regulation in daily life: spillover effects on positive and negative social events.

To minimize the possibility of scrutiny, people with social anxiety difficulties exert great effort to manage their emotions, particularly during social interactions. We examined how the use of two emotion regulation strategies, emotion suppression and cognitive reappraisal, predict the generation of emotions and social events in daily life. Over 14 consecutive days, 89 participants completed daily diary entries on emotions, positive and negative social events, and their regulation of emotions. Using multilevel modeling, we found that when people high in social anxiety relied more on positive

Unique theory of mind differentiation in children with autism and asperger syndrome.

This study was designed to determine if ToM abilities of children with autism and Asperger syndrome differentiate into Intrapersonal ToM and Social ToM. A battery of Social and Intrapersonal ToM tasks was administered to 39 children with autism and 34 children with Asperger syndrome. For both groups of children, ToM differentiated and Intrapersonal ToM was stronger than Social ToM. This asymmetry was greater for children with autism, whose Social ToM was especially weak. These results support a differentiated, as opposed to integrated, ToM. Moreover, the findings provide a more thorough unders

Relations among loneliness, social anxiety, and problematic Internet use.

The model of problematic Internet use advanced and tested in the current study proposes that individuals' psychosocial well-being, along with their beliefs about interpersonal communication (both face-to-face and online) are important cognitive predictors of negative outcomes arising from Internet use. The study examined the extent to which social anxiety explains results previously attributed to loneliness as a predictor of preference for online social interaction and problematic Internet use. The results support the hypothesis that the relationship between loneliness and preference for onlin

A family consultation intervention for health-compromised smokers.

Although spousal support predicts the success of a smoker's cessation efforts, "social-support" interventions based on teaching partners better support skills have had consistently disappointing results. We examined the potential utility of a family consultation (FAMCON) intervention based on family-systems principles in a treatment-development project involving 20 couples in which one partner (the primary smoker) continued to smoke despite having or being at significant risk for heart or lung disease. The 50% rate of stable abstinence achieved by primary smokers over at least 6 months exceeds

An ecological model of the impact of sexual assault on women's mental health.

This review examines the psychological impact of adult sexual assault through an ecological theoretical perspective to understand how factors at multiple levels of the social ecology contribute to post-assault sequelae. Using Bronfenbrenner's (1979, 1986, 1995) ecological theory of human development, we examine how individual-level factors (e.g., sociodemographics, biological/genetic factors), assault characteristics (e.g., victim-offender relationship, injury, alcohol use), microsystem factors (e.g., informal support from family and friends), meso/ exosystem factors (e.g., contact with the le

Social Participation When Aging With an Early-Onset Neurological Disability: Protocol for Descriptive Qualitative Research.

BACKGROUND: Due to improvements in health care and rehabilitation, as well as better social conditions, individuals living with traumatic brain injury (TBI), multiple sclerosis (MS), or spinal cord injury (SCI) are living longer. It is therefore necessary to ensure the presence of social and health services adapted to the realities and specific needs of these populations aging with disabilities. Social participation is a key determinant of active aging and health. However, there is limited evidence regarding the social participation of these aging populations. To support the development of mor

A Replication and Extension of the PEERS® for Young Adults Social Skills Intervention: Examining Effects on Social Skills and Social Anxiety in Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Young adults with ASD experience difficulties with social skills, empathy, loneliness, and social anxiety. One intervention, PEERS® for Young Adults, shows promise in addressing these challenges. The present study replicated and extended the original study by recruiting a larger sample (N = 56), employing a gold standard ASD assessment tool, and examining changes in social anxiety utilizing a randomized controlled trial design. Results indicated improvements in social responsiveness (SSIS-RS SS, p = .006 and CPB, p = .005; SRS, p = .004), PEERS® knowledge (TYASSK, p = .001), empathy (EQ, p = .

Social networks of unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness.

This study explored strengths, barriers, and role of social networks among unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness. Twenty women from two local shelters participated in semistructured, face-to-face interviews. A constant comparative analysis revealed 4 themes: support as a coping mechanism, loss of support as a path to homelessness, support as a drain, and support as a way to give. Almost universally, women experienced considerable barriers to housing, including physical health, mental health, substance abuse, or domestic violence. Despite precarious circumstances, women showed optimism,

Reconstructing Identity After Psychiatric Rehabilitation: A Phenomenological Study of Psychosocial Recovery Among Individuals with Schizophrenia in Indonesia.

Psychiatric rehabilitation supports recovery and community reintegration among individuals with schizophrenia, but persistent stigma, impaired social functioning, and disrupted self-identity can hinder psychosocial recovery after rehabilitation, particularly within collectivist socio-cultural environments. This study explored the lived experiences of psychosocial recovery among individuals with schizophrenia following psychiatric rehabilitation in Indonesia. A Husserlian descriptive phenomenological design was used. Twenty individuals with schizophrenia who had completed psychiatric rehabilita

Overcoming barriers to care for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: challenges and solutions in New Mexico and beyond.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) encompasses a range of neurodevelopmental impairments caused by prenatal alcohol exposure, affecting cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning. Despite its high prevalence, FASD remains underdiagnosed, particularly in regions like New Mexico (NM), where high rates of alcohol use, poverty, and unplanned pregnancies exacerbate the burden of the disorder. Individuals with FASD often face significant challenges in adaptive functioning, education, and social integration, with many experiencing adverse childhood events that compound developmental difficulti

Stressful life events and depressive symptoms in a post-war context: which informal support makes a difference?

Gerontological literature utilizes the life stress paradigm to understand the impact of stress on psychological well-being, as well as the protective role that social resources play in buffering those effects; however these relationships are not well understood within various historical and social contexts. Utilizing a sample of 490 community-residing older adults in post-civil war Lebanon, this study investigates the moderating role of various social support factors in the stress-depression relationship. Contrary to expectations, results suggest that older Lebanese are more susceptible to the…

The social factors affecting the diffusion of parasitology to Puerto Rico and Hong Kong.

This study seeks to understand the role played by social factors in the diffusion of parasitology to Puerto Rico, in particular those affecting the work of Bailey K. Ashford between 1898-1934. Most studies of Ashford to date focus mainly on the intellectual framework per se, and rarely on the surrounding social environment. In order to achieve this aim, Ashford's experiences were contrasted to those of Patrick Manson in Hong Kong and China between 1866 and 1889. By undertaking this comparative approach, it became clear that social factors more significantly affected the advancement on their re
