The Mental Health of People Living with HIV in China, 1998-2014: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the mental health burdens faced by people living with HIV in China is instrumental in the development of successful targeted programs for psychological support and care. METHODS: Using multiple Chinese and English literature databases, we conducted a systematic review of observational research (cross-sectional, case-control, or cohort) published between 1998 and 2014 on the mental health of people living with HIV in China. RESULTS: We identified a total of 94 eligible articles. A broad range of instruments were used across studies. Depression was the most widely stu

Association between childhood trauma and dissociation among patients with borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between childhood trauma and dissociative experience in adulthood in patients with borderline personality disorder. METHOD: Dissociative experiences scale scores and subscale scores for the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire were correlated in 139 patients. Patients were dichotomized into high or low dissociators using the Median Dissociative Experiences Scale score as the cut-off. RESULTS: Childhood Trauma Questionnaire Subscale scores for emotional and physical abuse and emotional neglect but not sexual abuse correlated significantly with Dissociative Exp

The relationship between anxiety disorders and physical disorders in the U.S. National Comorbidity Survey.

Although depression has clearly been shown to be associated with physical disorders, few studies have examined whether anxiety disorders are independently associated with medical conditions after adjusting for comorbid mental disorders. We examined the relationship between anxiety disorders and a wide range of physical disorders in a nationally representative sample. Data came from the National Comorbidity Survey (N=5,877, range=age 15-54 years, response rate=82.4%). The Composite International Diagnostic Interview [Kessler et al., 1998] was used to make DSM-III-R [American Psychiatric Associa

A proposed trial of dialectical behavior therapy and trauma model therapy.

Dissociative identity disorder and borderline personality disorder resemble each other in trauma histories and comorbidity. Each disorder is frequently comorbid with the other. Treatment outcome data for Dialectical Behavior Therapy of borderline personality disorder and Trauma Model Therapy of dissociative identity disorder are reviewed. The author proposes a psychotherapy treatment study in which there are three subject groups and two treatment conditions. The subject groups are borderline personality disorder without dissociative identity disorder; dissociative identity disorder without bor

Psychotherapy of the survivor of incest with a dissociative disorder.

The treatment of the survivor of incest who suffers from a dissociative disorder is probably somewhat more difficult than that of other survivors of incest because for these others the material is more readily available. Also the patient with DD was probably more severely abused or the dissociative defense would not have been needed. This too makes therapy difficult, especially in that most necessary step: the development of trust and rapport. Despite these problems, there is a very good chance for a successful therapy that will bring the dissociated material back into the main stream of consc

Concurrent posttraumatic stress disorder in psychogeriatric patients.

Despite the fact that there are over 11 million World War II veterans in the United States, recent research on combat-related trauma has focused primarily on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans. Several studies have found that the majority of Vietnam veterans who meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, ed 3 (DSM-III) criteria for PTSD have an additional major psychiatric diagnosis. This study explores the presence of the diagnosis of PTSD in an inpatient sample of 42 World War II veterans with an admission diagnosis other than PTSD. Foll

The classification of anxiety disorders.

This paper discusses the relationship between panic and other symptoms of anxiety disorders. The approach to classification of these disorders described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Third Edition) of the American Psychiatric Association is outlined. It is concluded that there are substantial advantages to the adoption of such a system. Not only does the separation of distinct syndromes offer some understanding of aetiology but there is evidence of a differential treatment response.

A laboratory procedure for the induction of flashbacks.

The authors administered infusions of lactate intravenously to seven patients with a DSM-III diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder, six of whom also met DSM-III criteria for panic disorder. The lactate infusions resulted in flashbacks in all seven patients and panic attacks in six patients. The authors conclude that with further development intravenous lactate infusion may be used to study flashbacks and other dissociative phenomena and to determine the relationship between flashbacks and panic anxiety.

[Differential Effects of an Internet-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Writing Therapy for Reducing PTSD Symptoms after Intensive Care: Results of a Per-Protocol Analysis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the differential effects of an internet-based cognitive-behavioral writing therapy (iCBT) on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms after intensive care in patients and their spouses. METHODS: This reanalysis of a randomized controlled trial compared PTSD symptom severity (measured by PCL-5) before and after therapy considering potential influencing factors in the per-protocol population. RESULTS: A significant reduction in post-traumatic symptom severity after iCBT was found. Eleven of the 25 treated participants showed a clinically significant change (PCL-

Displacement, Violence, and Mental Health: Evidence from Rohingya Adolescents in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

The Rohingya have endured generations of trauma through displacement and targeted violence in Myanmar. Hundreds of thousands have been forced out of the country, with a large proportion settling in refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. This study examines the impacts of exposure to trauma on mental health outcomes among Rohingya adolescents living in Bangladesh. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are examined as outcomes. The main explanatory variable is a measure of exposure to trauma at two levels of proximity (experiencing and witnessing). Resilience is investigated as

Magnetoencephalography in the Detection and Characterization of Brain Abnormalities Associated with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Comprehensive Review.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a functional brain imaging technique with high temporal resolution compared with techniques that rely on metabolic coupling. MEG has an important role in traumatic brain injury (TBI) research, especially in mild TBI, which may not have detectable features in conventional, anatomical imaging techniques. This review addresses the original research articles to date that have reported on the use of MEG in TBI. Specifically, the included studies have demonstrated the utility of MEG in the detection of TBI, characterization of brain connectivity abnormalities associat

The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Cognitive Change, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Posttraumatic Growth Among Chinese Adolescents After the Yancheng Tornado: The Mediating Effect of Rumination.

The aim of this study was to explore the different cognitive processes involved in the development of posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSDs) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). One year after the Yancheng tornado, 455 middle school students were assessed to study how posttraumatic cognitive change (PCC) influenced PTSD and PTG among traumatized Chinese adolescents through the role of rumination. The results indicated that intrusive rumination partly mediated the relationship between PCC and PTSD, and deliberate rumination partly mediated the relationship between PCC and PTSD and completely mediate

Stellate ganglion block in the treatment of SAPHO syndrome: A case report.

Synovitis, acne, palmoplantar pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is a rare and refractory autoinflammatory disease, and there is no consensus on its treatment. Stellate ganglion block (SGB) blocks sympathetic nerves, ameliorates immune dysfunction, and alleviates stress response, which has been used to treat various chronic pain syndromes, arrhythmias, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Also, the SGB has been reported to be successfully used to treat certain skin diseases, autoinflammatory diseases, and menopausal symptoms. In this study, over 3 years of follow-up,

Family resilience and the fortunes of war.

Military families have been a subject of concern due to increasing divorce rates and child maltreatment that have been directly linked to the number and length of combat deployments. In contrast many military families show positive resilience in the wake of multiple deployments. This article looks at several special situations where military families are faced with serious challenges after deployment: soldiers returning with post-traumatic stress disorder, soldiers receiving serious injuries, and those killed in action. McCubbin's Family Resilience Model is applied as a theoretical tool for un

The memory trace of an intrusive trauma-analog episode.

Intrusive memories are a core symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder. Compared with memories of everyday events, they are characterized by several seemingly contradictory features: intrusive memories contain distinct sensory and emotional details of the traumatic event and can be triggered by various perceptually similar cues, but they are poorly integrated into conceptual memory. Here, we conduct exploratory whole-brain analyses to investigate the neural representations of trauma-analog experiences and how they are reactivated during memory intrusions. We show that trauma-analog movies indu

An explorative outcome study of CBT-based multidisciplinary treatment in a diverse group of refugees from a Danish treatment centre for rehabilitation of traumatized refugees.

A group of highly traumatized refugees n = 26 with diverse cultural backgrounds in a Danish Clinic for Traumatized Refugees (CTR) was assessed for symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and other aspects of general functioning. Patients were assessed at intake, after the end of treatment and six months later. The results point to very high symptom levels and a large need for treatment in this population. Psychiatric symptoms and their correlates were assessed with the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (HTQ), the Trauma Symptom Checklist-23 (TSC-23), the Global Assessment of Function (GAF), and

Brief report: post-traumatic stress during emerging adulthood in survivors of pediatric cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To examine post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and disorder (PTSD) among survivors of childhood cancer and comparison peers during the transition to emerging adulthood. METHOD: From elementary and middle school, we prospectively followed a cohort of 56 cancer survivors, 60 comparison peers, and their parents. Assessments were completed after the youth's 18th birthday using questionnaires and a semi-structured psychiatric interview. Healthcare providers rated treatment severity and late effects. RESULTS: Survivors and comparison peers did not differ on rates of PTSS or PTSD, but

Psychopathology of sexual abuse in young people with intellectual disability.

The present study addressed two issues using a sample of child and adolescent victims and perpetrators of sexual abuse: (1) the extent of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the sample; and (2) the possible distinction between perpetrators whose motivations were sexually impulsive, and those who were controlling and abuse-reactive. Retrospective case material from 43 cases (21 victims only, and 22 perpetrators, of whom 16 were also victims) provided the data. Post-traumatic symptomatology was not common. Only one case of PTSD was found. Perpetrators could be distinguished by whether they

Anniversary reactions in Gulf War veterans: a follow-up inquiry 6 years after the war.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess the occurrence of anniversary reactions in Gulf War veterans 6 years after the conclusion of the war. METHOD: Subjects were administered questionnaires and asked to identify specific months of best and worst functioning and months of least or most symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for the 12 months before the study. Months of negative experiences were compared with previously documented dates of exposure to traumatic events during the war. Similar reports were also obtained from the veterans' spouses in order to assess corroborati

How Processing of Sensory Information From the Internal and External Worlds Shape the Perception and Engagement With the World in the Aftermath of Trauma: Implications for PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is triggered by an individual experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, often precipitating persistent flashbacks and severe anxiety that are associated with a fearful and hypervigilant presentation. Approximately 14-30% of traumatized individuals present with the dissociative subtype of PTSD, which is often associated with repeated or childhood trauma. This presentation includes symptoms of depersonalization and derealization, where individuals may feel as if the world or self is "dream-like" and not real and/or describe "out-of-body" experiences.
