Gastrointestinal symptoms in neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs): an observational study on prevalence, timing of progression, and impact on quality of life.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are rare, inherited lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) of the brain and retina. Gastrointestinal (GI) manifestations are reported in clinical practice but remain largely underexplored. Lysosomal dysfunction affects both the central and the peripheral nervous systems, including the enteric nervous system (ENS) where accumulation of storage material and neuronal loss may directly contribute to GI dysmotility. These insights, combined with emerging gene therapies targeting both brain and ENS pathology, underscore the need for validated GI endpoints in NCL res

Contemporary Insights Into HIV Esophagitis: Pathogenesis, Therapeutic Strategies, and Prognostic Outcomes.

Opportunistic infections caused by various bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites can cause esophagitis. The fungus Candida albicans is often believed to be the thief behind this disorder. This condition's distinctive signs include the process of inflammation and the development of esophageal ulcers. The underlying immunodeficiency condition in HIV/AIDS patients, especially those in the late stages of the disease, may lead to severe illness or even death if the lowered immune system can no longer combat common infections. These individuals are, therefore, more at risk of contracting diseases l

Preventive versus curative photobiomodulation for oral mucositis in patients with multiple myeloma undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: which approach is more effective?

PURPOSE: There is increasing evidence that photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy is both an effective and safe approach in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for both prevention and management of oral mucositis (OM), but its use in clinical practice is still limited and the timing of application is under discussion. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate possible differences between patients treated either with preventive or curative PBM therapy. METHODS: The retrospective case series included 24 patients suffering from multiple myeloma who underwent the same conditioning

Nutritional quality of dysphagia-oriented products sold on the Italian market.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is a condition characterized by swallowing difficulties that affects an estimated 8% of the population. Management of dysphagia often requires the use of specially formulated food products that are easier to swallow, while still meeting the nutritional needs of the patient. Despite the growing market for dysphagia-oriented products, there is a compelling need for comprehensive evaluations of their nutritional quality to ensure that they adequately support the health and well-being of this vulnerable population. The aims of this study were: (i) to investigate the nutriti

Illness uncertainty and dysphagia in Chinese oral cancer patients: the mediation effect of catastrophic cognition.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia, a serious symptom of oral cancer, is also the most common. Further, patients who are more uncertain regarding their illness tend to catastrophize, which may affect their rehabilitation and long-term survival rate. Considering this relationship, this study aimed to investigate the occurrence of dysphagia in Chinese patients with oral cancer and explore the correlation between catastrophic cognition, illness uncertainty, and dysphagia. METHODS: Applying a cross-sectional design, convenience sampling was used to recruit 180 patients with oral cancer. Advanced statistical meth

Effectiveness of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT-LOUD) in Parkinsonian-Type Multiple System Atrophy (MSA-P): A Case Report.

We describe a case of Parkinsonian-type multiple system atrophy (MSA-P) treated with Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT-LOUD; LSVT Global, Inc., Phoenix, AZ, USA). At age 73, the patient developed motor symptoms, including gait disturbances with a tendency to fall, as well as swallowing difficulties and impaired dexterity in his right hand, prompting a visit to our hospital. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed atrophy in the cerebellum and brainstem, particularly in the pons, along with enlargement of the fourth ventricle; however, the "cross sign" on the pons was not clearly visi

Characteristic Video Laryngeal Endoscopic "Pharyngeal Rotation" in Unilateral Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscle Paresis: A Case of Herpes Zoster Pharyngitis.

Herpes zoster pharyngitis (HZP) is a rare condition that should be considered as a differential diagnosis of acute dysphagia secondary to unilateral glossopharyngeal and/or vagal nerve palsy. Although early treatment is important to avoid adverse sequelae, serological diagnosis of varicella zoster virus (VZV) takes over a few days. Therefore, it is important to actively suspect VZV infection based on physical findings. Mucocutaneous lesions, curtain signs, and laryngeal palsy are well-known characteristic physical findings. In addition to these findings, the video laryngeal endoscopic finding

Maximum phonation time: an independent predictor of late-onset pneumonia after esophageal cancer surgery.

Dysphagia after esophagectomy is a major risk factor for aspiration pneumonia, thus preoperative assessment of swallowing function is important. The maximum phonation time (MPT) is a simple indicator of phonatory function and also correlates with muscle strength associated with swallowing. This study aimed to determine whether preoperative MPT can predict postoperative aspiration pneumonia. The study included 409 consecutive patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between 2017 and 2021. Pneumonia detected by routine computed tomography on postoperative days 5-6 was defined a

Modulation of reflex responses of the anterior and posterior bellies of the digastric muscle in freely moving rats.

BACKGROUND: Chewing and licking are primarily activated by central pattern generator (CPG) neuronal circuits in the brainstem and when activated trigger repetitive rhythmic orofacial movements such as chewing, licking and swallowing. These CPGs are reported to modulate orofacial reflex responses in functions such as chewing. OBJECTIVE: This study explored the modulation of reflex responses in the anterior and posterior bellies (ant-Dig and post-Dig, respectively) of the digastric muscle evoked by low-intensity trigeminal stimulation in conscious rats. METHODS: The ant-Dig and post-Dig reflex
