Pharmacological Efficacy of Tamarix aphylla: A Comprehensive Review.

Tamarix aphylla is a well-known species of the genus Tamarix. T. aphylla (Tamaricaceae) is a perennial tree in Asia, the Middle East, and Central Africa. It is used as a carminative diuretic in tuberculosis, leprosy, and hepatitis. Various pharmacological properties have been shown by T. aphylla, such as antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, anticholinesterase, and wound-healing activity. However, T. aphylla has not received much attention for its secondary metabolites and bioactive constituents. Research has shown that this plant has hidden potential that needs to be exp

Dysregulation of miR-146a by periodontal pathogens: A risk for acute coronary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a polymicrobial, chronic inflammatory disease leading to loss of tooth-supporting structures. The bacteremia, endotoxemia, and systemic low-grade inflammation associate periodontitis with systemic illnesses such as diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease. Periodontal pathogens have been detected from atheromatous plaque by amplification of the genetic material by using specific oligonucleotide primers in polymerase chain reaction. Though the association between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases has been ascertained by systematic reviews and meta-analy

Novel Drosophila model for mitochondrial diseases by targeting of a solute carrier protein SLC25A46.

Mutations in SLC25A46 gene have been identified in mitochondrial diseases that are sometimes classified as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2, optic atrophy and Leigh syndrome. Human SLC25A46 functions as a transporter across the outer mitochondrial membrane. However, it is still unknown how the neurodegeneration occurring in these diseases relates to the loss of SLC25A46 function. Drosophila has CG5755 (dSLC25A46) as a single human SLC25A46 homolog. Here we established pan-neuron specific dSLC25A46 knockdown flies, and examined their phenotypes. Neuron specific knockdown of dSLC25A46 resulted

Management of an Ailing Anterior Implant Using a Minimally Invasive Flapless Surgical Technique: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Peri-implantitis is an inflammation of the soft and hard tissues surrounding an implant that results in the destruction of alveolar bone. Surgical flaps are usually elevated to allow for thorough debridement and disinfection of the implant surface. This frequently results in gingival recession, crown margin exposure, and a poor esthetic result. This is not desirable in the esthetic zone. In this case report, a minimally invasive flapless technique incorporating the use of curettage and antiseptics is used to successfully disinfect a contaminated dental implant to allow for soft t

Innovative intraoral cooling device better tolerated and equally effective as ice cooling.

PURPOSE: Most of the patients who receive myeloablative therapy prior to stem cell transplantation develop oral mucositis (OM). This adverse reaction manifests as oral mucosal erythema and ulcerations and may require high doses of morphine for pain alleviation. OM may also interfere with food intake and result in weight loss, a need for parenteral nutrition, and impaired quality of life. To date, there have been very few studies of evidence-based interventions for the prevention of OM. Cryotherapy, using ice chips, has been shown to reduce in an efficient manner the severity and extent of OM,

Plasma metabolome and skin proteins in Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A patients.

OBJECTIVE: Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A (CMT1A) disease is the most common inherited neuropathy that lacks of therapy and of molecular markers to assess disease severity. Herein, we have pursued the identification of potential biomarkers in plasma samples and skin biopsies that could define the phenotype of CMT1A patients at mild (Mi), moderate (Mo) and severe (Se) stages of disease as assessed by the CMT neuropathy score to contribute to the understanding of CMT pathophysiology and eventually inform of the severity of the disease. METHODS: We have used: (i) a high-throughput untargeted metabolomic

Early complications and performance of 327 heat-pressed lithium disilicate crowns up to five years.

PURPOSE: The prospective follow-up aimed to assess the performance of lithium disilicate crowns and clinical reasons of adverse events compromising survival and quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 58 patients were treated with 375 heat-pressed monolithic crowns, which were bonded with resin cement. Annual recalls up to five years included a complete dental examination as well as quality assessment using CDA-criteria. Any need for clinical intervention led to higher complication rate and any failure compromised the survival rate. Kaplan-Meier-method was applied to all crowns and a dataset containi

Immunohistochemical analysis of the gingiva with periodontitis of type I plasminogen deficiency compared to gingiva with gingivitis and periodontitis and healthy gingiva.

OBJECTIVE: Type I plasminogen deficiency (Plgdef) is an uncommon chronic inflammation of mucous membranes. Gingival enlargements usually proceed with progressive periodontal destruction and tooth-loss. Plasmin(ogen)-independent enzymatic mechanisms for fibrin clearance have already been discussed in the literature. Our primary objective was to verify, immunohistochemically, the occurrence of different enzymatic factors involved in tissue breakdown of inflamed compared to healthy gingiva. Secondly, we tried to find out, if these patients have a similar microbiological profile to the patients wi

[The effect of gastric juice on the development of erosive changes in hard dental tissue].

INTRODUCTION: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is an esophageal disorder where the refluxed gastric contents enters first into the esophagus followed by the pharynx, oral cavity, larynx, airway and middle ear, causing a range of disorders and symptoms. Hydrochloric acid from the gastric contents is responsible for the demineralization of dental hard tissues and release of matrix metalloproteinase from the dentin. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to verify the SEM (scanning electron microscopy) analysis of the surface enamel, the enamel-dentin border and dentine after the exposure of

Peptidylarginine deiminase from Porphyromonas gingivalis contributes to infection of gingival fibroblasts and induction of prostaglandin E2 -signaling pathway.

Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) expres-ses the enzyme peptidylarginine deiminase (PPAD), which has a strong preference for C-termin … tion of PGE2 synthesis, the latter of which may strongly contribute to bone resorption and eventual tooth loss.

Comparison of pH changes induced by calcium enriched mixture and those of calcium hydroxide in simulated root resorption defects.

INTRODUCTION: External resorption usually occurs after dental trauma and the loss of root cementum. Because it has the ability to induce alkaline pH, calcium hydroxide is used in treatment of external resorption, which is reportedly not free from disadvantages. Driven by such understanding, the aim of this in vitro study was to compare the pH changes induced by calcium enriched mixture (CEM) and those of calcium hydroxide in simulated root resorption defects. METHODS: Twenty-one paired extracted human premolars were cut to the length of 14 mm. Root canal preparation was performed by using Pro

Expanding the phenotype of PRPS1 syndromes in females: neuropathy, hearing loss and retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate synthetase (PRS) I deficiency is a rare medical condition caused by missense mutations in PRPS1 that lead to three different phenotypes: Arts Syndrome (MIM 301835), X-linked Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMTX5, MIM 311070) or X-linked non-syndromic sensorineural deafness (DFN2, MIM 304500). All three are X-linked recessively inherited and males affected display variable degree of central and peripheral neuropathy. We applied whole exome sequencing to a three-generation family with optic atrophy followed by retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in all three cases, and ataxia

Relationship between bone turnover biomarkers, mandibular bone mineral density, and systemic skeletal bone mineral density in premenopausal and postmenopausal Indian women.

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is one of the most common metabolic bone disorders. Osteoporosis is reported to cause bone loss in the alveolar processes of maxilla and mandible, which provide bony framework for tooth anchorage. However, the association between systemic osteoporosis and oral health remains controversial. Available evidence suggests that Indian women have lower peak bone mass than their Western/other Asian counterparts. The present study evaluated the relationship between mandibular bone mineral density (mBMD), systemic skeletal BMD, and bone metabolism in premenopausal

The role of aberrant mitochondrial bioenergetics in diabetic neuropathy.

Diabetic neuropathy is a neurological complication of diabetes that causes significant morbidity and, because of the obesity-driven rise in incidence of type 2 diabetes, is becoming a major international health problem. Mitochondrial phenotype is abnormal in sensory neurons in diabetes and may contribute to the etiology of diabetic neuropathy where a distal dying-back neurodegenerative process is a key component contributing to fiber loss. This review summarizes the major features of mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons and Schwann cells in human diabetic patients and in experimental animal mo
