PURPOSE: Recent literature shows that occult discoligamentous injuries still remain difficult to diagnose in the first instance. Thresholds as indicators for discoligamentous segmental instability were previously defined. But, since supine radiodiagnostic is prone to spontaneous reduction of a displaced injury, and even some highly unstable injuries reveal only slight radiographic displacement, these criteria might mislead in the traumatized patient. A highly accurate radiographic instrument to assess segmental motion is the computer-assisted quantitative motion analysis (QMA). The aim was to

The coroner's post-mortem examination revealed a tom aorta. This case illustrates that although a patient may appear stable, a major catastrophic event may nonetheless be taking place. How many times have we responded to MVAs similar to the one described here and seen those involved deny injuries? We carry a higher suspicion of aortic injury after someone has been ejected from a vehicle or involved in a high-speed crash. That's not always the case, however, and understanding how internal organs respond to high-speed impacts is crucial. Damage to the aorta may result after a sudden deceleration

BACKGROUND: Time to union in civilian firearm injuries is variable and not well described in the literature. This study measures the time to union for femoral and tibial shaft fractures treated with an intramedullary nail (IMN). Time to union is compared across open, closed, or ballistic trauma (BT) fractures. The goal of the study is to answer the questions: (1) Do tibial shaft fractures heal in specific temporal patterns based on mechanism of injury and (2) Do these temporal healing patterns apply to both the tibia and femur?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Included patients had tibial or femoral sha

BACKGROUND: Emergent decompression, either by closed reduction or surgical decompression, of the acutely compressed cervical spinal cord is recognized as important in minimizing the neurological outcomes of these injuries. The aim of this study is to optimize New Zealand's capability to perform closed reductions.
METHODS: Regional hospitals throughout New Zealand were surveyed on their capability to reduce acute cervical spine dislocations using traction. A systematic literature review was performed to investigate aspects of patient selection, reduction technique and the outcomes achieved wit

OBJECTIVE: Cranioplasty is a technically straightforward procedure; however, it is becoming increasingly apparent that it is associated with relatively high morbidity and a significant failure rate due to either infection or autologous bone flap resorption. The aim of this study was to determine which factors influenced the incidence of cranioplasty complications and failure.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was undertaken of all patients who had a cranioplasty at the two major trauma hospitals in Western Australia between the start of 2004 and the middle of 2015.
RESULTS: Five hundred and

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe central nervous system trauma. This single-center, observational and in vitro study investigated the diagnostic potential of CASC11 and its possible regulatory mechanism in SCI using clinical serum samples and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cell models. CASC11, miR-130b-5p, and SPP1 levels were measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Cellular functions and targeting relationships were assessed via cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), flow cytometry, western blot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), dual-luciferase reporter, and
