First results from the time resolved opacity spectrometer on the National Ignition Facility (invited).

Radiative opacity plays a central role in determining stellar structure, with iron contributing significantly to the solar opacity, particularly near the radiation-convection boundary. Current atomic models of opacity remain a major source of uncertainty, factoring into discrepancies between standard solar models and helioseismic observations. Agreement with models could be attained if key opacity values were 10%-50% larger, motivating high-precision experimental benchmarks at stellar interior conditions. The Opacity-on-National Ignition Facility campaign measures iron opacity via x-ray transm

Delayed elective nodal irradiation in head-and-neck cancer radiotherapy reduces acute lymphocyte damage, lymphopenia, and modulates immune signatures.

BACKGROUND: Elective nodal irradiation (ENI) for locally advanced head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (LA-HNSCC) contributes to hematotoxicity and may impair radiotherapy-immunotherapy synergy. We investigated whether delayed ENI, using an upfront boost to gross disease and involved nodes followed by standard ENI, reduces radiation-induced lymphocyte DNA damage and lymphopenia (RIL) while modulating peripheral immune signaling compared with standard ENI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight LA-HNSCC patients assigned for adjuvant (n = 13) or definitive (n = 15) (chemo)radiotherapy were rando

Investigation of YSO-SiPM detector response for alpha spectroscopy applications.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-particle spectroscopy is widely used in nuclear physics, radiation monitoring, safeguards, and environmental measurements. Conventional silicon detectors provide excellent spectrometric performance; however, their application in portable or harsh-environment instrumentation may be limited by mechanical fragility, radiation sensitivity, and operational constraints. Scintillator-based detectors coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) represent a promising alternative because of their compactness, robustness, and simplified integration with modern electronics. Despite the fa

Influence of scan mode, tilt, and radiation dose on CT radiomic metrics.

BACKGROUND: Radiomic features derived from computed tomography (CT) are highly susceptible to variations in acquisition parameters, which can introduce confounding effects in multicenter research and reduce diagnostic accuracy. While the effects of parameters such as scanning mode and dose have been studied, the impact of gantry tilt-despite its routine clinical use-remains underexplored in radiomics literature. PURPOSE: To systematically evaluate how scan mode (axial vs. helical), gantry tilt (0° vs. 5°), and radiation dose affect CT-based radiomic metrics using an anthropomorphic liver phan

Exploring the diagnostic performance of low-dose CT for colorectal cancer assessment: feasibility of artificial intelligence iterative reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced long-range abdominal computed tomography (CT) plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and staging of colorectal cancer (CRC) yet may involve excessive radiation exposure, especially for patients requiring multiple examinations. This raises the need to reduce radiation dose while maintaining image quality. Given the potential of a novel artificial intelligence iterative reconstruction (AIIR) algorithm to improve image quality in low-dose (LD) CT, this study aimed to investigate the feasibility of applying AIIR to LD abdominal CT for CRC diagnosis. METHODS: In this p

Ultraviolet radiation reshapes the transcriptomic landscape of human skin aging: Insights from a multi-age comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Skin aging arises from both intrinsic processes and extrinsic factors, with ultraviolet (UV) radiation being the primary extrinsic cause of photoaging. However, the molecular mechanisms that differentiate these processes across the human lifespan remain incompletely characterized. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to comprehensively compare the dynamic transcriptomic profiles of photoaged (neck, high UV exposure) and intrinsically aged (chest, low UV exposure) skin across three age groups (young, middle-aged, elderly), and to integrate these findings with biophysical skin measurements.

Cardiac Substructure Dose Quantification and Optimization in Left-Sided Lung Cancer Radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: As curative-intent radiation therapy provides excellent local control for lung tumors, patients are surviving longer to experience treatment-associated adverse cardiac events. Patients treated for left-lung tumors are particularly vulnerable due to the heart's anatomical proximity. While the whole heart is conventionally contoured as an organ-at-risk, emerging research highlights cardiac substructure doses better predict cardiotoxicity post-radiotherapy than mean heart dose. METHODS: An institutional dataset of 50 contrast-enhanced CT scans was compiled from patients treated betwe

Can resident-performed POCUS and clinical predictors effectively risk-stratify emergency department patients with confirmed renal colic?

BACKGROUND: Universal reliance on non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT KUB) for suspected renal colic contributes to emergency department (ED) overcrowding and significant radiation exposure. This study evaluates the diagnostic performance of resident-performed point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) alongside clinical and laboratory markers to establish an early multi-modal risk-stratification framework for managing patients with confirmed urolithiasis. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational cohort study of 313 consecutive patients with CT-confirmed urolithiasis at a tertiary-care ED

Neoadjuvant stereotactic body vs conventionally fractionated radiation therapy for borderline resectable and locally advanced pancreatic cancer: a propensity score-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is increasingly used in neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) for borderline resectable (BR) and locally advanced (LA) pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PC), but head-to-head data on SBRT vs conventionally fractionated radiation therapy (CFRT) remain limited. We compared clinical and pathological outcomes of SBRT vs CFRT in BR/LA PC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 312 patients with BR/LA PC who received NCRT followed by margin-negative (R0)/margin-positive surgery at 3 high-volume academic centers (2011-2021). BACKGROUND: The use of the deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) technique reduces cardiac and lung radiation exposure during left breast cancer radiotherapy. However, the optimal beam delivery technique and the effects of patient adaptation during DIBH remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the dosimetric differences between continuous semi-arc and tangent-arc plans in stage I left-sided breast cancer patients using DIBH were compared, and the treatment session duration was descriptively analyzed to characterize treatment-time trends during routine DIBH delivery. METHODS: T

Gallic acid enhances radiosensitivity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma models in association with CRL4-DCAF1-related CDK1 destabilization and ROS-associated DNA damage amplification.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains poorly responsive to radiotherapy (RT). This study examined whether gallic acid (GA) enhances PDAC radiosensitivity in association with CDK1 destabilization and ROS-associated DNA damage amplification. METHODS: GEO transcriptomic datasets and TCGA-PAAD clinical data were integrated to prioritize CDK1, followed by tissue and cell-line validation. Low-dose clonogenic experiments assessed radiosensitization at 50 μM under limited short-term cytotoxicity, whereas mechanistic interrogation was performed predominantly at 150 μM and should

Piezo1-specific deletion in macrophage attenuates radiation-induced lung injury progression in mice.

BACKGROUND: Macrophages play a crucial role in the inflammation and wound repair processes of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI). The mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 is upregulated during these inflammatory and wound repair processes. However, the involvement of macrophage Piezo1 in the pathogenesis of RILI remains unclear. This study aims to elucidate the regulatory role of Piezo1 in the injury and repair process in RILI and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: We established Myeloid-specific knockout of Piezo1 (Piezo1∆ LysM) mice, and the mice were subjected to total-che

No Effect of Ppm1d-Mutant Clonal Hematopoiesis on Atherosclerosis Development in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Clonal hematopoiesis driven by somatic mutations is an emerging cardiovascular risk factor, and the DNA damage response gene PPM1D is among the most frequently mutated genes. Mutations in PPM1D are enriched in cancer patients and survivors, where cytotoxic therapies promote the expansion of mutant clones, a condition termed therapy-related clonal hematopoiesis. Although PPM1D-mutant clonal hematopoiesis has been associated with increased risk and poorer prognosis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in humans, it remains unclear whether these mutations, or their expansion unde
