Association between a large change between the minimum and maximum monthly values of solar insolation and a history of suicide attempts in bipolar I disorder.

BACKGROUND: The rate of suicide attempts by patients with bipolar disorder is high. In addition to patient and country specific factors, environmental factors may contribute to suicidal behavior. Sunlight has multiple diverse impacts on human physiology and behavior. Solar insolation is defined as the electromagnetic energy from the sun striking a surface area on earth. We previously found that a large change in solar insolation between the minimum and maximum monthly values was associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts in patients with bipolar I disorder. METHODS: The association…

Relative associations of behavioral and physiological risks for cardiometabolic disease with cognition in bipolar disorder during mid and later-life: findings from the UK biobank.

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic disease risk factors are disproportionately prevalent in bipolar disorder (BD) and are associated with cognitive impairment. It is, however, unknown which health risk factors for cardiometabolic disease are relevant to cognition in BD. This study aimed to identify the cardiometabolic disease risk factors that are the most important correlates of cognitive impairment in BD; and to examine whether the nature of the relationships vary between mid and later life. METHODS: Data from the UK Biobank were available for 966 participants with BD, aged between 40 and 69 years…

Previous strength training attenuates ouabain-induced bipolar disorder-related behaviors and memory deficits in rats: Involvement of hippocampal ERK/CREB and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathways.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a central nervous system condition that is typified by fluctuations in mood, oscillating between depressive and manic, and/or hypomanic episodes. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that strength training may act as a potent protector against behavioral and neurochemical changes induced by BD. A strength training protocol was performed with adult male Wistar rats, and seven days following the conclusion of training, a single ouabain injection was administered. Following ouabain administration, the animals were subjected to behavioral tests after the …

Thiol-disulphide homeostasis, ischemia-modified albumin, complete blood count-derived inflammatory markers and C-reactive protein from acute mania to early remission in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: There is much recent evidence that inflammation contributes to the pathophysiology of acute mania in bipolar disorder (BD). However, no study was evaluated in which the change in thiol-disulphide homeostasis, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), complete blood count-derived inflammatory markers (CBC-IMs) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in bipolar patients was followed-up from acute mania to early remission. METHODS: Seventy-seven bipolar patients in acute mania and ninety-one HC were enrolled. We measured levels of thiol-disulphide parameters, IMA, and CBC-IMs such as neutrophil-t…

Cortical and subcortical structural differences in psychostimulant-free ADHD youth with and without a family history of bipolar I disorder: a cross-sectional morphometric comparison.

Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a family history of bipolar I disorder (BD) are associated with increased risk for developing BD, their neuroanatomical substrates remain poorly understood. This study compared cortical and subcortical gray matter morphology in psychostimulant-free ADHD youth with and without a first-degree relative with BD and typically developing healthy controls. ADHD youth (ages 10-18 years) with ('high-risk', HR) or without ('low-risk', LR) a first-degree relative with BD and healthy comparison youth (HC) were enrolled. High-resolution 3D T1-wei

Methodology for rapid assessment of blood lithium levels in ultramicro volumes of blood plasma for applications in personal monitoring of patients with bipolar mood disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a common mental health condition, characterized by extreme changes in mood, energy, and behavior. BD is often managed through mood-stabilizing medications, of which lithium formulations remain the most reliable and effective at reducing the risk of suicide. To achieve adequate and consistent efficacy, lithium concentrations need to be maintained within a narrow therapeutic range (0.4 to 1.2  mmol  /  L). Because of its narrow therapeutic index, long-term lithium therapy is associated with serious side effects and risks of toxicity. It is believed that the availability …

Adverse effects of obesity on cognitive functions in individuals at ultra high risk for bipolar disorder: Results from the global mood and brain science initiative.

BACKGROUND: The burden of illness associated with bipolar disorder (BD) warrants early pre-emption/prevention. Prediction models limited to psychiatric phenomenology have insufficient predictive power. Herein, we aimed to evaluate whether the presence of overweight/obesity is associated with greater cognitive decline in individuals at high risk (HR) or ultra high risk (UHR) for BD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis to investigate the moderational role of body mass index (BMI) on measures of cognitive function. Subjects between the ages of 8 and 28 years with a positive family his…
