Clinical Quest for Associated Cognitive Impairment in Major Depressed Patients.

Patients diagnosed with unipolar disorder usually experience impaired cognitive functioning during an acute depressive episode. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the association of specific clinical factors with cognitive dysfunction in a group of major depressed patients. 65 subjects diagnosed with recurrent major depressive disorder were evaluated during an acute episode. The cognitive functions were assessed with neuropsychological tests for attention and processing speed, memory, verbal fluency, psychomotor speed and executive functions. Hamilton Depression Rating Scale -

The joint role of impulsivity and distorted cognitions in recreational and problem gambling: A cluster analytic approach.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Pathways Model (Blaszczynski & Nower, 2002) posits that problem gambling is a heterogeneous disorder with distinct subgroups (behaviorally conditioned gamblers, emotionally vulnerable gamblers, and antisocial-impulsivist gamblers). Impulsivity traits and gambling-related cognitions are recognized as two key psychological factors in the onset and maintenance of problem gambling. To date, these constructs have been explored separately, and their joint role in determining problem gambling subtypes has received little attention. The goal of our study was to identify subgro

The Temporal Relationship Between Faulty Gambling Cognitions and Gambling Severity in Young Adults.

Disordered gambling in young adults is hypothesized as being related to mistaken gambling-related cognitions. Few studies have examined the temporal order of this relationship using longitudinal data. The purpose of this study is to understand the directionality of the relationship between gambling cognitions and gambling severity in a longitudinal sample of young adults. Young adults (N = 578), initially aged 18-21 years, completed the Manitoba Longitudinal Survey of Young Adults at two time points approximately 2-3 years apart. Measures of beliefs about randomness related to gambling and gam

Adolescent mothers and their children affected by HIV-An exploration of maternal mental health, and child cognitive development.

BACKGROUND: Some children born to adolescent mothers may have developmental challenges, while others do not. Research focusing on which children of adolescent mothers are at the highest risk for cognitive delay is still required. Both maternal HIV status and maternal mental health may affect child development. An examination of maternal mental health, especially in the presence of maternal HIV infection may be timely. This study explores the relationship between the mental health of adolescent mothers (comparing those living with and not living with HIV) and the cognitive development performan

Cognitive impulsivity in specific learning disabilities.

Many studies on cognitive impulsivity in learning disabled children have been criticized for their methodological limitations, and they have not dealt with the different types of learning disability. The aim of this study was to overcome these limitations and to assess if there was a significant cognitive impulsivity in reading disorder and/or spelling disorder by using the 20-item Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFF20). A total of 110 children (second through eighth grades) were recruited from a cohort of children assessed for the first time in a National Health clinic specialized in the stud

Further evidence for slow binocular rivalry rate as a trait marker for bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Binocular rivalry refers to a situation where contradictory information is presented simultaneously to the same location of each eye. This leads to the alternation of images every few seconds. The rate of alternation between images has been shown to be slower in euthymic participants with bipolar disorder than in healthy controls. The alternation rate is not uniformly slowed in bipolar disorder patients and may be influenced by clinical variables. The present study examined whether bipolar disorder patients have slower alternation rates, examined the influence of depression and expl

Microbiota from healthy mice alleviates cognitive decline via reshaping the gut-brain metabolic axis in diabetic mice.

Diabetic cognitive decline has been associated with the gut microbial disorders, but its potential gut-brain axis mechanisms remain unclear. Herein we transplanted the gut microbiota from healthy mice into type 1 diabetic (T1D) mice and then investigated the effect of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) on cognitive function and the gut-brain metabolic axis. The results demonstrate that FMT from healthy mice effectively improved the learning and memory abilities in T1D mice, and significantly reduced neuroinflammation and neuron injury in the cortex and hippocampus. Moreover, FMT partly rev

Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and Behavior Impairment: Comorbidity or Specific Profile?

INTRODUCTION: Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in perceiving and processing verbal and non-verbal information. It is usually accompanied by impaired academic skills leading to school dropout and emotional disturbances, resulting in significant distress and behavioral problems. METHODS: A cognitive, academic, and emotional-behavioral assessment was performed at T0 and T1 in children and adolescents with SLD. Participants received psychotherapy and speech therapy treatment from T0 to T1. RESULTS: In SLD, the most compromised cognit

Anxiety sensitivity and depression in multiple chemical sensitivities and asthma.

Patients with sensitivities to multiple chemicals report symptoms of cognitive dysfunction, respiratory distress, and mood disturbance. Lifetime and current psychiatric disorders, personality traits associated with symptom reporting, and tests of cognitive function were compared between 30 subjects with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), 19 asthmatics, and 31 healthy controls. Relative to asthmatics and controls, more MCS subjects met criteria for current depression and somatization disorder. MCS subjects and asthmatics scored significantly higher than controls on scales of chemical odor i

Progression of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease.

Change in cognitive function was assessed over 12 months in 110 patients over the age of 65 satisfying National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association (NINCDS/ADRDA) criteria for "probable" Alzheimer's Disease. A highly significant deterioration in cognitive function was observed. Decline in cognitive scores was relatively normally distributed. Patients who died during the follow-up had more apraxia at entry to the study than survivors. A greater rate of decline was seen in patients whose parents suffered f

Effectiveness of cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) in anorexia nervosa: a case series.

We investigated whether cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is effective in improving cognitive flexibility in anorexia nervosa (AN). Twenty AN outpatients were consecutively recruited at the Eating Disorders Center of the Turin University. All participants completed 10 sessions of CRT. Neuropsychological performances improved with CRT. Data showed also a significant improvement of impulse regulation and interoceptive awareness (subscales of the Eating Disorders Inventory-2). CRT was also associated with improvement of reflexive skills and awareness. These preliminary findings are promising, b

[Stress, anxiety, panic. Panic attack and panic disorder. A new psychiatric concept].

Pathological anxiety--painful and incapacitating--can be defined as perception of stress with cognitive distortion. The traditional unitary model of anxiety neurosis is replaced by the american model (DSM III) with "panic disorder" and "panic attacks" representing the cornerstone of the new construct, based on the evidence (by Donald Klein) of the efficacy of so-called antidepressant drugs. Behavioral and cognitive treatments are useful, mainly in anxiety with agoraphobia. "General anxiety disorder" is now considered as a "residual category". Clinical aspects, differential diagnosis, circumsta

Brain derived neurotrophic factor in perioperative neurocognitive disorders: Current evidence and future directions.

An increase in the age of surgical patients as well as the volume of surgeries is associated with a rise in perioperative neurocognitive disorders. These disorders encompass acute delirium and longer-term cognitive dysfunctions. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that plays a dynamic role in a series of neurological functions including neuroplasticity, neurogenesis and synaptic regulation. Given the possible alterations to brain physiology in response to surgery, this review aims to explore the relationship between changes in central and peripheral BDNF concentrations a

De novo fear conditioning across diagnostic groups in the affective disorders: evidence for learning impairments.

De novo fear conditioning paradigms have served as a model for how clinical anxiety may be acquired and maintained. To further examine variable findings in the acquisition and extinction of fear responses between clinical and nonclinical samples, we assessed de novo fear conditioning outcomes in outpatients with either anxiety disorders or depression and healthy subjects recruited from the community. Overall, we found evidence for attenuated fear conditioning, as measured by skin conductance, among the patient sample, with significantly lower fear acquisition among patients with depression and

The Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Screening Test for Patients and Professionals: Validation in Cognitive Impairment and in Severe Mental Illness.

Dysphagia is a symptom that appears with high prevalence in persons diagnosed with dementia, intellectual disability, or severe mental illness. Risk of aspiration pneumonia or even death is very high in these populations. However, screening for dysphagia risk in these patients is complicated by the fact that most of them suffer from cognitive impairments and behavioral manifestations that hinder the assessment process using the existing screening tests. The aim of this study was to validate the Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Screening Test for Patients and Professionals, in patients with cognitive im

Abnormal Cerebral Perfusion Profile in Older Adults with HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder: Discriminative Power of Arterial Spin-Labeling.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aging HIV-infected (HIV+) population has increased vascular comorbidities, including stroke, and increased cognitive deficits compared with the general population. Arterial spin-labeling is a technique to measure cerebral blood flow and is more sensitive than regional volume loss in assessing neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive aging. Previous studies have found global cerebral perfusion abnormalities in the HIV+ participants. In this study, we evaluated the specific regional pattern of CBF abnormalities in older HIV+ participants using quantitative whole-brain
