HIV infection complicated with talaromyces marneffei, tuberculosis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a complex case report.

BACKGROUND: Due to severe immunosuppression, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals are prone to multiple opportunistic infections and malignancies. This report presents a complex case of a 62-year-old male HIV patient who was diagnosed with co-infections of Talaromyces marneffei, tuberculosis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), and ultimately non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma. This case provides valuable insights for clinical diagnosis and treatment. The patient was admitted with complaints of “poor appetite, weight loss, and diarrhea for two weeks, accompanied by fever for

Neonatal tropical infections: A case series and clinical insights.

Tropical fevers can occur year-round but are rare in neonates. These infections, caused by bacteria and viruses, include Dengue, Malaria, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Zika, Chikungunya, Leptospirosis, Scrub Typhus and Influenza. This case series presents five neonatal tropical infections admitted to our NICU: two congenital Chikungunya, two neonatal Chikungunya and one co-infection of Dengue and Zika. The diagnosis was confirmed via polymerase chain reaction serology. In two cases, both mother and newborn tested positive; in three, only the newborn was positive. Neonatal tropical infections are rare

Co-isolation of genetically distinct Burkholderia pseudomallei strains from a single patient in North Queensland.

While investigating colony morphology variation within clinical isolates of Burkholderia pseudomallei (Bp) isolated from a single clinical infection, we identified two distinct strains (based on their multi-locus sequence type) from Bp TSV292. Reports of simultaneous co-infection are un-common, with only two studies in Thailand documenting such cases: (1) 2 out of 133 cases, and (2) 13 out of 59 patients infected with two to three polyclonal Bp strains exhibiting different genotypes. Here, we present the first comprehensive multi-omics characterization of co-infecting Bpstrains isolated from a

A Case of Tuberculous Meningitis With Concomitant Spinal Co-infection With Tuberculosis and Aspergillosis.

Co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Aspergillus in an immunocompetent host is rare but can occur. In this case, we present a patient with central nervous system tuberculosis (TB) and biopsy-proven spinal co-infections with TB and Aspergillosis. We highlight the complexities of treating a TB-Aspergillosis co-infection given drug-drug interactions between standard therapy for both conditions. Using susceptibilities for the Aspergillus and carefully monitoring drug levels of the antifungal agents, we were able to optimally treat the co-infection. This patient was ultimately discharge

Synergistic pathogenicity of novel duck Orthoreovirus and salmonella typhimurium in ducks.

Co-infection with Novel Duck Orthoreovirus (N-DRV) and Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) poses significant threats to duck health. The disease associated with N-DRV is characterized by epizootic outbreaks featuring hepatosplenomegaly, hemorrhage, and necrosis. Ducklings infected with STM primarily exhibit symptoms such as fibrinous pericarditis, perihepatitis, and intestinal hemorrhage. In recent years, China has experienced outbreaks involving mixed infections of these two pathogens in various regions, leading to more complex and atypical clinical manifestations. This study investigated

Establishment of an in vitro co-infection model of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis.

BACKGROUND: The two intestinal protozoan parasites Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum cause infections in a wide spectrum of vertebrates and have also been shown to infect suitable hosts simultaneously. To investigate potential effects between these parasites and on host cells, a co-infection model with IPEC-J2 cells was established. METHODS: Optimal infection conditions and several infection doses of both parasites were tested. The effect of Giardia growth medium on IPEC-J2 cells was analyzed using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction assay,

Bacterial interactions underpin worsening lung function in cystic fibrosis-associated infections.

UNLABELLED: Chronic lung infections are the primary cause of morbidity and early mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF) and, as such, have been the subject of a great deal of research. Subsequently, they have become one of the key paradigms for polymicrobial infections. The literature, however, has traditionally focused on the presence of pathogens in isolation or univariate measures like number of species to predict decline of lung function and ignores large swathes of data. Here, we suggest that looking at the interactions between species identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, rather than at spe

Expression of key cytokines in dog macrophages infected by Leishmania tarentolae opening new avenues for the protection against Leishmania infantum.

The detection of Leishmania tarentolae in sympatric areas where Leishmania infantum is endemic raised questions regarding the protective effect exerted in dogs by L. tarentolae when in coinfection. This study aimed monitoring the in vitro gene expression of pro- (IFN- γ; TNF-α; IL-12) and anti-inflammatory (IL-4; IL-6; IL-10) cytokines in primary canine macrophages infected by L. tarentolae and L. infantum in single and in co-infections. Macrophages differentiated from dog blood mononuclear cells were infected with the L. tarentolae field-isolated (RI-325) and laboratory (LEM-124) strains, wit…

Risk factors for prolonged infection and secondary infection in pediatric severe sepsis.

PURPOSE: Sepsis causes significant worldwide morbidity and mortality. Inability to clear an infection and secondary infections are known complications in severe sepsis and likely result in worsened outcomes. We sought to characterize risk factors of these complications. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of clinical data from 401 subjects enrolled in the PHENOtyping sepsis-induced Multiple organ failure Study. We examined factors associated with prolonged infection, defined as infection that continued to be identified 7 days or more from initial identification, and secondary infection

Reemergence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae disease: Pathogenesis and new approaches.

The review discusses the recurrence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae), a bacterium causing atypical pneumonia, primarily affecting Europe and Asia due to climate change, immunity decline, antibiotic resistance, and genetic heterogeneity. The COVID-19 pandemic initially reduced M. pneumoniae cases due to preventative measures, but its reemergence suggests different transmission dynamics and exacerbates clinical severity with co-infections with other viruses. The pathogenicity of M. pneumoniae is attributed to its intracellular changes, toxin release, and adhesion processes, which can res

Assessment of Culicidae collection methods for xenomonitoring lymphatic filariasis in malaria co-infection context in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Entomological surveillance of lymphatic filariasis and malaria infections play an important role in the decision-making of national programs to control, or eliminate these both diseases. In areas where both diseases prevalence is low, a large number of mosquitoes need to be sampled to determine vectors infection rate. To do this, efficient mosquito collection methods must be used. This study is part in this framework, to assess appropriate mosquito collection methods for lymphatic filariasis xenomonitoring in a coexistence context with malaria in Burkina Faso. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPA

Anemia among malaria patients with and without soil-transmitted helminths in Arba Minch town health facilities: A comparative cross-sectional study.

Anemia is one of the severe clinical outcomes associated with concomitant infection of malaria and soil-transmitted helminths (STH). Since STH infections mostly share similar geographical areas with malaria, the influence of co-infections on the epidemiology and course of Anemia deserves greater consideration to assess the impact of interventions, the adequacy of strategies implemented, and the progress made in the fight against Anemia. So, this study was done to investigate Anemia among STH-negative malaria patients and malaria patients co-infected with single or multiple STHs, in 3 health fa

Neurological involvement in patients with primary immunodeficiency.

INTRODUCTION: Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) are defined by recurrent infections, allergies, autoimmunity, and malignancies. Neurologic symptoms are one of the major components of some immunodeficiency syndromes, such as Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT), Nijmegen breakage syndrome (NBS), and Purine Nucleoside Phosphorylase (PNP) deficiency, which are considered as the primary involvement. Various pathological mechanisms, DNA repair disorders, metabolic abnormalities, and autoimmune phenomena have also been linked with neurological conditions. MATERIALS AND METHOD: We retrospectively assess

Investigating oral human papillomavirus co-infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis.

Compared to cervical cancer, little is known about human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven oropharyngeal cancer and their cofactors. Here, we investigated potential associations between Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) with oral HPV and HPV persistence, which are known cofactors in cervical carcinogenesis, and also play a role in HPV-driven oropharyngeal cancer. Saliva samples (n = 547) from 312 people were tested for CT and NG and whom had previously been tested for oral HPV infection in a longitudinal study. Eight participants were positive for CT (2.6%) and one for NG (0.

Bacterial complications in patients with coronavirus infection, new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities.

We present the case of a young patient who developed pneumonia during the COVID-19 outbreak. The course of the disease with involvement of interstitial lung tissue atypical for bacterial infections, the picture of infection markers could indicate SARS-CoV-2. The patient was tested by PCR method on admission with negative results. Due to the atypical follow-up of the disease, suggesting a severe course of SARS, PCR testing of the material collected by BAL was performed BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Pneumonia plus Panel (bioMérieux). Legionella pneumophilla and coronavirus genetic materials were found. We
