Developing a Community of Practice to Provide Care Coordination and Address Health-Related Social Needs for Veterans Receiving Care in Community-Based Settings: Program Development and Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of US veterans receive care outside of US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration facilities-a proportion expected to rise due to the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act and expanded use of VA-purchased community care. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the structure and impact of the Veterans Care Coordination in Community Settings (VetCoor) program. VetCoor was implemented in 2 non-VA community health centers, and we explored setting, staffing, and treatment targets to enhance veteran care and inform broader dissemination. METH

Community stigma, victimization, and coping strategies among gay, bisexual, and other cis-gender men who have sex with men in slum communities in Ghana. BSGH-003.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and cis-gender men who have sex with men (GBMSM) face severe consequences, especially within stigmatized environments. However, very little is known about the experiences of GBMSM living in slums in SSA and Ghana. This study investigates the experiences of stigma, victimization, and coping strategies and proposes some interventional approaches for combating stigma facing GBMSM in slum communities. METHODS: We engaged GBMSM living in slums in two major Ghanaian cities. We used a time-location sampling and collected data through in-depth individual interviews. Two maj

Engaging community-dwelling older adults in fall prevention programs: a qualitative study on strategies promoting participation in fall prevention programs among community-dwelling older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Fall rates and fall-related injuries among community-dwelling older adults (≥65 years) are expected to increase rapidly, due to the aging population worldwide. Fall prevention programs (FPPs), consisting of strength and balance exercises, have been proven effective in reducing fall rates among older adults. However, these FPPs have not reached their full potential as most programs are under-enrolled. Therefore, this study aims to identify promising strategies that promote participation in FPPs among community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This is an exploratory qualitative stu

Who is accessing community lateral flow device testing and why? Characteristics and motivations of individuals participating in COVID-19 community testing in two English local authority areas.

BACKGROUND: Antigen testing using lateral flow devices (LFDs) plays an important role in the management of the novel coronavirus pandemic of 2019 (COVID-19) by rapidly identifying individuals who are asymptomatically carrying high levels of the virus. By January 2021, LFD community testing sites were set up across English local authority areas to support the management and containment of regional COVID-19 cases, initially targeting essential workers unable to work from home during the national lockdown. This study aimed to examine the characteristics and motivations of individuals accessing co

Tailored Communicating Bypass for the Management of Complex Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysms: "Flow-Counteraction" In Situ Bypass and Interposition Bypass Using Contralateral A2 Orifice as Donor Site.

BACKGROUND: The use of bypass surgery for anterior communicating artery (ACOM) aneurysms is technically challenging. Communicating bypass (COMB), such as pericallosal artery side-to-side anastomosis, is the most frequently used and anatomically directed reconstruction option. However, in many complex cases, this technique may not afford a sufficient blood supply or necessitate sacrificing the ACOM and the eloquent perforators arising from it. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate tailored COMB and propose a practical algorithm for the management of complex ACOM aneurysms. METHODS: For 1 patient with an ane

Forbidden insanity: the systematic denial of mental health issues from a state-run psychiatry.

The authors discuss the issue of psychiatric care and patients during the second half of XX century in Albania, when the country was under an absolute regime of communism. Completely isolated from the rest of the world, the territory remained a prohibited area for scholars, and local authors due to censorship or self-censorship, offered very scarce information. The general feeling of the public was that of a denial of psychic disorders in total, combined with the fear that this kind of disorders has ever since provoked. Nevertheless, insanity defence was a formulation encountered with a certai…

Before the "boom": Readings and uses of Vygotsky in Argentina (1935-1974).

This article analyzes, from the standpoint of reception studies and transnational history, the different ways Lev S. Vygotsky's published work in Spanish, English, and Russian was read, discussed, and used in Argentina from 1935 to 1974. This "early" reception primarily involved 2 groups: writers affiliated with the Argentine Communist Party, and individuals without political affiliations who engaged in discussion with Communists. The article argues that Communism, as a cultural tradition and political organization, played a key role in the reception and diffusion of Vygotsky's work. The ideas…

The role of African Canadian immigrant Midwives: A historical perspective on community homebirth.

PROBLEM: There is limited scholarship on homebirth practices and social networks of African Canadian immigrant community midwives during times of strained healthcare. BACKGROUND: Community care planning left gaps both during Canada's historic nation building phase and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were held with Afrodescendant family members and storytellers who knew community midwives who practiced between 1800-1960 in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Transcripts were triangulated with archival searches and key community informant consultat

Communication-focused interventions to reduce missed nursing care: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Missed nursing care (MNC) is associated with adverse patient outcomes, and communication problems may contribute to care omissions. Evidence on interventions that explicitly target communication to reduce MNC remains unclear. PURPOSE: To synthesize interventional evidence on communication-focused strategies intended to reduce MNC or specific nursing care omissions. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review of six databases and gray-literature sources. Randomized, quasi-experimental, and pre-experimental studies involving nursing staff in health institutions were eli

OpenDVP: an experimental and computational framework for community-empowered deep visual proteomics.

Deep visual proteomics (DVP) is an emerging approach for cell-type-specific and spatially resolved proteomics. However, its broad adoption has been constrained by the lack of an open-source end-to-end workflow within a community-driven ecosystem. Here we introduce openDVP, an experimental and computational framework for accessible and scalable DVP. OpenDVP combines open-source image analysis tools (MCMICRO, QuPath and napari) with scverse formats (AnnData and SpatialData) for multiomics integration. It provides two workflows: a fast-track pipeline requiring no image analysis expertise, and an

Unpacking associations between trauma types and schizotypy dimensions in a community sample.

Interpersonal trauma (IT; intentionally harming another individual), is an established risk factor for psychosis-spectrum symptoms. However, few studies have investigated whether differential risk based on trauma type (IT versus non-IT) extends across major dimensions within schizotypy. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether increased risk associated with IT reflects the nature of the trauma or a 'dose' effect from accumulation of trauma, as IT occurs more often. Aiming to inform risk assessments, we employed a large community sample (N = 506) to address these gaps. A schizotypy measure disti

Implementing Community-Based Medication-Assisted Recovery for Opioid Use Disorder.

Background: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a significant problem facing many Americans. In Chicago, approximately 67,000 suffer with OUD and the city noted a 40% increase in overdose deaths in 2022. Community based recovery homes for formerly incarcerated people often encounter residents with OUD. Frequently, OUD services are only available off-site. Objective: Following baseline symptom reporting and OUD assessment, participants began buprenorphine-naloxone treatment on site. Drug and alcohol counseling continued. Improvements in symptoms and behaviors were key targets for this intervention, re

Resolving metabolic interdependencies during chlorobenzene dechlorination in a Dehalobacter-containing community.

Chlorinated benzenes are persistent groundwater contaminants whose anaerobic transformation can depend on organohalide-respiring microorganisms embedded within metabolically interconnected communities. Here, we asked which microorganisms and metabolic functions characterize a Dehalobacter-containing dechlorinating community, and whether bioinformatics and genome-resolved metabolic modeling could identify candidate interactions supporting organohalide respiration. To address these questions, we integrated dechlorination data from related Dehalobacter-containing enrichment lineages with genome-r
