Racism in Education among Black Youth in Canada and its Association with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Racial discrimination in educational settings remains a significant barrier to equitable learning environments and is toxic for the mental health of Black youth in Canada. This study employed a mixed-methods multi-study approach to document the rates, dynamics, and mental health impacts of racial discrimination in education experienced by Black youths aged 14 to 24. Quantitative data were collected from two large samples (N = 558 and N = 914) to measure racial discrimination in education, stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additionally, qualitative data fro

Post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression in North African intensive care unit survivors: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of critical illness often face significant physical and psychological challenges, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, which can severely impact their quality of life. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of PTSD, anxiety, and depression among intensive care unit (ICU) survivors 3 months after discharge, and investigate the prevalence and determinants of post-intensive care syndrome-related neuropsychiatric disorders (PICS-ND). METHODS: This is a prospective observational analytical study carried out in a

Cognitive biases: potential behavioral marker for future development of postpartum depression and childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Postpartum Depression (PPD) and Childbirth Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CB-PTSD) are psychiatric conditions that cause significant distress. Yet despite their high prevalence and decades of research, knowledge about causal cognitive mechanisms that may assist in predicting or preventing these conditions is still missing. One characteristic of PPD and CB-PTSD that may contribute to their early prevention is the existence of cognitive biases concerning future parenting. Cognitive biases have been shown to play an important role in the etiology of various other psychiatric disorders, including

The impact of patient choice on uptake, adherence, and outcomes across depression, anxiety, and eating disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Growing evidence highlights the critical role of patient choice of treatment, with significant benefits for outcomes found in some studies. While four meta-analyses have previously examined the association between treatment choice and outcomes in mental health, robust conclusions have been limited by the inclusion of studies with biased preference trial designs. The current systematic review included 30 studies across three common and frequently comorbid mental health disorders (depression N = 23; anxiety, N = 5; eating disorders, N = 2) including 7055 participants (Mage 42.5 years, SD 11.7; 6

Prevalence and associated factors of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder among trauma patients: multi-centered cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Stress-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), are expected to be the leading cause of global mortality and morbidity by 2030. However, there is limited information on the prevalence of depression and PTSD among trauma patients in Ethiopia. Our study was aimed at determining the prevalence of depression and PTSD and factors affecting it among trauma patients. METHODS: A hospital-based, multi-centered, cross-sectional study was conducted among 621 patients who visited the trauma outpatient clinic from April to June 2023. The stratified random sampling tech

Altered thyroid function and neurometabolic features provide clues to understand the comorbidity of bipolar II depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is highly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), leading to poor treatment outcome and prognosis. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying BD comorbid with OCD remain poorly understood. To address it, we recruited 69 untreated patients with bipolar II depression, including 35 comorbid with OCD (BD-II-Depression-OCD) and 34 without OCD (BD-II-Depression-nonOCD), and 38 healthy controls (HC). Serum thyroid hormones levels and neurometabolic ratios, including N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds (Cho), and creatine (Cr), were detected

Association between the functional brain network and antidepressant responsiveness in patients with major depressive disorders: a resting-state EEG study.

BACKGROUND: Recent neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that the heterogeneous antidepressant responsiveness in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with diverse resting-state functional brain network (rsFBN) topology; however, only limited studies have explored the rsFBN using electroencephalography (EEG). In this study, we aimed to identify EEG-derived rsFBN-based biomarkers to predict pharmacotherapeutic responsiveness. METHODS: The resting-state EEG signals were acquired for demography-matched three groups: 98 patients with treatment-refractory MDD (trMDD), 269 th…

Prognostic models for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms following traumatic brain injury: a CENTER-TBI study.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with an increased risk of major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We aimed to identify predictors and develop models for the prediction of depression and PTSD symptoms at 6 months post-TBI. METHODS: We analysed data from the Collaborative European NeuroTrauma Effectiveness Research in Traumatic Brain Injury study. We used linear regression to model the relationship between predictors and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and PTSD symptoms (PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual fo…

Adverse childhood experiences and late-life depression in older Chinese adults: the mediating roles of sleep disorders and chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to depression in later life; however, the mediating pathways in older Chinese adults remain underexplored. Sleep disorders, highly prevalent in geriatrics, may mediate this pathway through chronic stress mechanisms, yet evidence from Asian cohorts is limited. This study examines the mediating roles of sleep duration, chronic diseases, and other factors in the ACEs-depression associations using a nationally representative sample. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 6,585 adults aged 60 years and older, obtain

Esketamine-induced post-traumatic stress disorder flashbacks during treatment-resistant depression indication: is it just a side effect?

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe and frequent affection that is highly comorbid to major depressive disorder. Comorbid PTSD and depression are usually treatment-resistant, with a high risk of functional impairment and suicide. Esketamine nasal spray is a recent validated treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD), but its efficacy on comorbid TRD-PTSD remains insufficiently documented. In particular, flashbacks can occur during esketamine administration and their influence on clinical outcomes is unknown. OBJECTIVES: Our main objective was to describe esket…

An evaluation of the associations among posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and complicated grief in active duty military personnel with traumatic loss.

Between 44% and 87% of active duty service members and veterans who deployed following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks know someone who was killed or seriously injured in combat. Considering the high frequency and known impact of traumatic loss, it is important to understand if and how traumatic loss may impede posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment progress in military personnel. Additionally, experiencing a traumatic loss elevates the risk of developing prolonged grief disorder (PGD), which is associated with higher levels of PTSD symptoms, more functional impairment, and m
