Intussusception is a pediatric abdominal emergency in early childhood involving telescoping of 1 part of the bowel into another part. In most children, the condition is idiopathic with no identifiable lead point. Meckel diverticulum is the most common lead point, followed by polyps and duplication cysts. We describe a case of a boy with intussusception caused by a duplication cyst that was drawn retrograde through the ileocecal valve. The patient presented after a 3-month period of symptomatology and had been considered to have constipation before signs of intestinal obstruction developed. Onl…

BACKGROUND: The management of a septic peritonitis open abdomen is a serious problem for clinicians. Open surgery is associated with several complications such as bleeding and perforation of the bowel.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report a case of a 59-years-old female who underwent a sigmoid resection with an latero-terminal (L-T) anastomosis for the perforation of a diverticulum. After a few days the patients developed a new widespread peritonitis. At the emergency re-laparotomy, surgeons found dehiscence of the posterior wall of the anastomosis with fecal contamination. At admission in I…

In France, upper gastrointestinal haemorrhages have an estimated annual incidence of 143 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Classically, two types of digestive hemorrhage are described: acute and chronic digestive hemorrhages. Upper endoscopy is carried out in case of hematemesis or melena. It requires that the patient has been fasting for at least 6hours for solids and 3hours for liquids. The main etiologies of hemorrhagic hemorrhage of the origin are the vascular abnormalities, inflammatory or drug-induced ulcerations, intestinal tumors, Meckel's diverticulum, and Dieulafoy ulcer. The modalities…

This report describes a two-month-old girl who presented with signs and symptoms of a distal small bowel obstruction. She underwent an abdominal ultrasound that revealed a right lower quadrant cystic mass. A Technetium-99 scan revealed increased activity in the right lower quadrant consistent with a Meckel's diverticulum. Following a nondiagnostic laparoscopic evaluation, a laparotomy was performed to allow direct palpation of the small bowel and colon. Direct palpation of the ileum revealed a soft intraluminal mass at the ileocecal valve. The child underwent an ileocecectomy and anastomosis i…

The present report describes a patient with pseudo-occlusion of the left internal carotid artery accompanied by aortic anomalies consisting of right-sided aortic arch with aberrant left subclavian artery arising from Kommerell's diverticulum. Initial attempt of carotid artery stenting via the trans-femoral approach was unsuccessful because of low origin of the left common carotid artery. Therefore, carotid artery stenting (CAS) via the trans-brachial approach was successfully performed with distal balloon protection. Eight months later, the patient presented with restenosis of the left interna…

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about anterior female urethral masses and their management. Owing to their location, these masses are often missed on physical examination and are diagnosed at an advanced stage.
METHODS: We report on 2 anterior urethral masses, with 1 mass arising from an anterior diverticulum.
RESULTS: Both masses were difficult to identify on examination but were clearly delineated by magnetic resonance imaging. In both cases, a biopsy was essential for histologic characterization of the mass, predicting prognosis and dictating management options. One patient had high-grade cle…

Isthmic aortic rupture or disruption should be systematically sought when there is high kinetic energy trauma to the thorax. This condition … er therapeutic management. The main diagnostic pitfalls of the CT scan are the presence of a ductus diverticulum and post-isthmic fusiform dilatation. Associated lesions must not be overlooked. The most common are ruptures of the aortic root and the thoracic aorta in the diaphragmatic hiatus.

Tetralogy of Fallot without pulmonary valve syndrome is almost always associated with an absent ductus arteriosus. Patients with right aortic arch and retroesophageal left subclavian artery have a vascular ring if the left ductus arteriosus or its remnant and the Kommerell diverticulum are present. We report the cases of 2 infants in whom the role of an absent ductus arteriosus or its remnant is noteworthy. Both patients had a combination of tetralogy of Fallot with absent pulmonary valve syndrome and right aortic arch with retroesophageal left subclavian artery without a vascular ring. The ab…

Inguinal bladder hernia is a rare clinical condition, with 1-3% of all inguinal hernias involving the bladder. Any portion of the bladder may herniate, from a small portion or a diverticulum to most of the bladder. We present a 55-year-old male with an intermittent right scrotal mass of 6 months' duration. The mass lesion protruded through the right inguinal canal before voiding and reduced after that. Scrotal sonography revealed a hypoechoic lesion in the scrotum that stretched cranially to the intra-abdominal portion of the bladder. Excretory urography showed a duplicated system in the left …

Caecal diverticulitis is an uncommon phenomenon in western countries. The clinical diagnosis is often difficult as it mimics other acute abdominal conditions like appendicitis, colitis or neoplasia. Diagnosis is often made at operation. Operative strategy has been controversial and there is no broad consensus emerging. We report the case of a 71-year-old woman, known to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, who presented acutely with right iliac fossa pain. A clinical diagnosis of appendicitis was made. At laparoscopy, a solitary, inflamed, gangrenous caecal diverticulum was found. A lap…

These aneurysms represent a significant risk for thromboembolism and rupture, and elective surgical management should be advised, even for asymptomatic cases.

BACKGROUND: Duodenal diverticuli are present in up to 22% of the population. However, perforation of a duodenal diverticulum with spillage of enteric contents into the retroperitoneum is rare.
METHODS: We report three cases of perforated duodenal diverticulitis.
RESULTS: Clinical presentations varied widely from patients with acute abdominal findings and generalized sepsis to a patient with mild symptoms of abdominal discomfort. CT scanning was the imaging modality used to make an accurate diagnosis. Treatment approaches for the most stable patient included nonoperative management with antib…

An 80-year-old woman presented to our outpatient center with abdominal pain and blood-stained stools. She underwent a colonoscopy, which sho … ir in the subserosal space of the sigmoid colon. The air seemed to have leaked from a 2-cm inflamed diverticulum in the sigmoid colon. The mesosigmoid was also expanded by air. We discuss the anatomical mechanism of the various clinical presentations of extraluminal air following colonoscopy.

Generalized leiomyomatosis of the esophagus and stomach is a rare disease. According to literature data, age of the patients ranges from 9 to 84 years, in men this disease is diagnosed 2 times more often than in women. It is necessary to differentiate this disease with cancer, esophageal diverticulum, achalasia of the cardia, hiatal hernia. In our case a woman of 32 years was ill from 5 years of age. Correct diagnosis was not made before surgery. Endoscopic examination suspected leiomyoma. Only repeated urgent histological tests during surgery resulted in accurate diagnosis (subtotal leiomyoma…

Duplications of alimentary tract are uncommon congenital anomalies that are usually identified during the pediatric age. However, a minority of cases remain unsuspected until adulthood. They may be cystic or tubular in appearance and characteristically arise from the mesenteric border of the intestine. This paper reports a 37-year-old male with a huge cystic duplication of the ascending colon. In facing such a huge abdominal cystic tumor, differential diagnoses including duplication cyst, mesenteric cyst, choledochal cyst, giant diverticulum, and cystic tumor of the pancreas should be consider…
