[Neurophysiology in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease].

INTRODUCTION: Neurophysiological studies conducted in subjects who it is suspected are suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) are usually aimed at searching for what is called a typical EEG. However, the EEG is a dynamic test and therefore subject to variations in time. Furthermore, there are other kinds of neurophysiological tests that may also be of interest, and the lack of typical traces in the new variant of the disease forces us to explore other diagnostic approaches. METHOD: We performed a clinical EEG correlation in the course of the evolution of the disease, in which we obser

[The event-related potential characteristics of reading disabilities in children under condition of continuous performance test].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of event-related potential (ERP) of reading disabilities (RD) in children under the condition of continuous performance test (CPT) and their possible neurological basis. METHODS: Using ERP technique with CPT conditions, such as semantics, direction and pitch identification, 16 RD boys and their matched normal boys were tested. A comparative study was conducted to analyze these indicators of accuracy, reaction time, false alarm, wave amplitude and latency between the two groups. RESULTS: Among the three kinds of identification tests, RD children h

Distribution of rate-intensity function types in chick cochlear nerve after exposure to intense sound.

Intense sound exposure to the chick ear produces cochlear damage and losses in auditory function. At twelve days post exposure there is considerable structural repair, although a defect on the sensory epithelium remains in the form of an incompletely healed 'patch' lesion. Auditory function significantly recovers 12 days after the exposure, but it, too, is incomplete. In this paper we describe the relationship between stimulus intensity and cochlear nerve discharge rate (the rate-intensity function) in two groups of chicks. One is exposed to damaging sound levels but allowed 12 days to recover

[Analysis of pulsed bioelectric activity of rabbit cerebral cortex in response to low-intensity microwave radiation].

In experiments on 22 rabbits the influence of a pulse microwave irradiation on extracellular activity of separate nervous cells of sensorimotori and occipital areas of a cortex brain is shown. The reaction could consist in activation or in braking frequency of the discharges, that was connected to frequency impulsation in an initial background. The researched mode of a microwave irradiation (1.5 GHz, duration of a pulsed-0.4 microsecond, frequency of their recurrence 1000 Hz, DFEpulsed-300 microW/sm2) had a corrigizing action.

Neuromonitoring in the operating room: why, when, and how to monitor?

This review considers the main principles and indications of EEG and evoked potential (EP) neuromonitoring in the operating room. Neuromonitoring has a threefold purpose: to warn the surgeon that he has to adjust his strategy, to confirm his decision, and to help him improve subsequent procedures. The pathophysiology of intraoperative events liable to alter the EEG or the EPs is first considered. The usefulness of neuromonitoring in preventing neurological complication relies on its ability to detect neurological dysfunction at a reversible stage. This applies especially to ischemia and compre

5-Hydroxytryptamine depolarizes neurons of cat pancreatic ganglia.

Pancreatic ganglia contain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-immunoreactive axons, some of which are extensions of myenteric neurons located in the pyloric antrum and proximal duodenum. The present study investigated the effect of 5-HT on the membrane potential of cat pancreatic ganglion neurons by means of intracellular recordings in vitro. Pressure application of 5-HT evoked a fast depolarization in 29 of 147 neurons and a slow depolarization in 89 of 147 neurons. A biphasic response was observed in 10 of 108 neurons. The 5-HT-induced slow depolarizing response was not altered in a low Ca2+ (0.1 mM

Pathophysiology of sensorimotor cortex in cortical myoclonus.

We have studied greatly enhanced cortical responses to somatosensory stimuli [giant somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) or magnetic field (SEF)] and cortical activities preceding the myoclonus (premyoclonus spike) in patients with cortical myoclonus, using magnetoencephalographic (MEG) techniques. A P1m component of giant SEF was estimated as a dipole positioned on the postcentral gyrus in all giant SEFs. This indicates that abnormally enhanced responses to sensory stimuli originate from the sensory cortex. In most of the patients with cortical reflex myoclonus, a dipole for the premyoclonus

Therapy of myoclonus.

The treatment of myoclonus is mainly based on the pathophysiological origin of the neuronal discharges producing the jerks. Myoclonus of cortical origin responds best to treatment. Drugs commonly used to treat epilepsy are usually capable of controlling action and stimuli-sensitive cortical myoclonus. Piracetam (6-20 g/day), clonazepam (2-12 mg/day), sodium valproate (1,200-3,000 mg/day), and primidone (500-1,000 mg/day) are the most useful ones, often given in combination. Myoclonus of non-cortical origin, i.e. reticular reflex myoclonus or spinal myoclonus, may respond to serotoninergic drug

Neurophysiology of the female pelvic floor.

The neurogenic theory of female pelvic floor dysfunction suggests a common thread for malfunction of pelvic visceral and support activities. Support for the neurogenic hypothesis has been promoted by recent literature showing that more central neuropathic processes, such as in the cauda equina or pelvic plexus, can be associated with the previously described peripheral neuropathies and are linked to pelvic floor disorders. Damage by vaginal dissection has been suggested as another etiologic factor. This concept has further been supported by studying the effects of pudendal nerve blockade. Meth

Neuromagnetic cortical signals in a patient with hydrocephalus.

We studied a patient with a communicating hydrocephalus using a whole-head neuromagnetometer. Auditory evoked fields (AEFs) were elicited with 600 ms tones, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz in frequency. The source locations were more superficial and posterior in the patient than in controls, but still agreed with activation of the supratemporal cortex. Tonotopic organization of the AEF sources was similar in the patient and healthy control subjects. The amplitude spectra, source strengths and sites, and reactivity of the patient's spontaneous activity were normal. Despite apparent decrease of white

Laser microbeam axotomy and conduction block show that electrical transmission at a central synapse is distributed at multiple contacts.

Touch (T) sensory neurons in the leech innervate defined regions of skin and synapse on other neurons, including other T cells, within the ganglionic neuropil. The cells' receptive fields in the periphery are comprised of a central region, innervated by thick axons, and adjoining regions (minor fields) innervated by thinner axons. Secondary branches, known to be sites of synapses, emerge from the thinner and thicker axons. Pairs of T cells appear to make up to 200 separate contacts distributed within the neuropil. When the T cell is hyperpolarized, as occurs during natural stimulation of the c

[Contingent negative variation in normal and dyslexic children].

The most prominent ERP to occur during intervals of preparation and anticipation is the contingent negative variation (CNV) or expectancy wave. The purpose of the study was to distinguish the characteristics of the CNV in a group of children with reading disabilities or dyslexia, and to compare it with a group of normal readers. Nine right handed boys aged between 9 and 13 years with reading disabilities were studied. The children were matched with a group of nine normal readers. Four derivations were used: F3, Cz, P3, and O1, with reference to linked ears. Data were analyzed using multivariat

The pattern evoked electroretinogram in optic neuritis. A combined psychophysical and electrophysiological study.

The electroretinogram (ERG) and the occipital visual evoked potential (VEP) evoked by sinusoidal grating stimuli have been recorded in cases with a past history of optic neuritis. Although a significant reduction in pattern ERG amplitude was found in the patient group there was considerable overlap between the patient and the control populations. The pattern ERG was not found to be a sensitive test in providing evidence of a previous attack of optic neuritis. Reduction in VEP amplitude was considerably greater than was the reduction in ERG amplitude. The residual visual deficit in the patients

Maturation of contralateral brain-stem responses in preterm infants.

Average auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) evoked by left and right ear stimulation of varying intensities were recorded from ipsilateral and contralateral scalp placements in human neonates. Subjects included pre-term infants, healthy full-term infants and high risk, full-term infants. Pre-term infants were classified into 4 age groups ranging from 29 to 41 weeks post-conceptional age (PCA). Significant ipsilateral/contralateral differences were observed. Further, this effect was highly dependent upon age. The youngest pre-term infants were devoid of contralateral activity despite robust ip
