Evaluating the use of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography in the workup of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia: a cost-utility analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The use of positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in the evaluation of patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia can improve the diagnosis of infectious foci and guide clinical management. We aimed to evaluate the cost-utility of PET/CT among adults hospitalized with Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia. METHODS: A cost-utility analysis was conducted from the healthcare payer perspective using a probabilistic Markov cohort model assessing three diagnostic strategies: (a) PET/CT in all patients, (b) PET/CT in high-risk patients only, and (c) routine diagnostic

Role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in the postoperative follow-up in patients with stage I-III NSCLC: A retrospective single-institution study.

BACKGROUND: The optimal surveillance strategy in patients with resected non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is unknown. Early detection of recurrences by follow-up imaging might improve survival and whole-body 18F-FDG-PET/CT might be the optimal imaging modality given its high accuracy in preoperative staging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from a single-center cohort of 205 patients with resected stage I-III NSCLC and FDG-PET/CT surveillance was retrospectively collected. Patients had preoperative FDG-positive tumors and FDG-PET/CT at 6, 12, 24 months, chest CT at 18 months. Thereafter, annual ch

Comparison of PET-CT and MRI for evaluation of axillary lymph nodes in early breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of axillary lymph node in women with breast cancer is very important as it can change the initial treatment decision. None of the noninvasive methods used for assessment of axilla is accurate as sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) yet. This study compared the diagnostic performance of 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (PET-CT) and Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) in preoperative axillary evaluation of women diagnosed with early breast cancer (EBC). METHODS: The records of 1246 patients operated for EBC be

Systematic endoscopic staging of mediastinum to determine impact on radiotherapy for locally advanced lung cancer (SEISMIC): protocol for a prospective single arm multicentre interventional study.

BACKGROUND: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is established as the preferred method of mediastinal lymph node (LN) staging in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Selective (targeted) LN sampling is most commonly performed however studies in early stage NSCLC and locally advanced NSCLC confirm systematic EBUS-TBNA evaluation improves accuracy of mediastinal staging. This study aims to establish the rate of detection of positron emission tomography (PET)-occult LN metastases following systematic LN staging by EBUS-TBNA, and to determine the utility of

The role of 18F-FDG PET/CT and single isotope 99mTc-tetrofosmin scintigraphy combined with SPECT in diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome.

We present a case of a 47-year-old woman with type 1 multiple endocrine neoplasia, primary hyperparathyroidism, insulinoma, and nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma. In July 2017, the patient was referred to the Department of Nuclear Medicine of St George University Hospital in Plovdiv for a PET/CT scan because of persistent hypoglycemic episodes and high serum insulin levels. A whole-body PET/CT examination was performed 65 min after intravenous application of 188 MBq 18F-FDG on a hybrid PET/CT scanner (Biograph mCT 64, Siemens). We detected a low metabolically active lesion 10 mm in diameter (SU

Intraperitoneal Glucose Transport to Micrometastasis: A Multimodal In Vivo Imaging Investigation in a Mouse Lymphoma Model.

Bc-DLFL.1 is a novel spontaneous, high-grade transplantable mouse B-cell lymphoma model for selective serosal propagation. These cells attach to the omentum and mesentery and show dissemination in mesenteric lymph nodes. We aimed to investigate its early stage spread at one day post-intraperitoneal inoculation of lymphoma cells (n = 18 mice), and its advanced stage at seven days post-inoculation with in vivo [18F]FDG-PET and [18F]PET/MRI, and ex vivo by autoradiography and Cherenkov luminescence imaging (CLI). Of the early stage group, nine animals received intraperitoneal injections, and nine

Early Post-ischemic Brain Glucose Metabolism Is Dependent on Function of TLR2: a Study Using [18F]F-FDG PET-CT in a Mouse Model of Cardiac Arrest and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

PURPOSE: The mammalian brain glucose metabolism is tightly and sensitively regulated. An ischemic brain injury caused by cardiac arrest (CA) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) affects cerebral function and presumably also glucose metabolism. The majority of patients who survive CA suffer from cognitive deficits and physical disabilities. Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) plays a crucial role in inflammatory response in ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Since deficiency of TLR2 was associated with increased survival after CA-CPR, in this study, glucose metabolism was measured using non-invasive [1

COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination-Induced Lymphadenopathy Mimics Lymphoma Progression on FDG PET/CT.

We present here a 72-year-old man with mantle cell lymphoma who has completed chemotherapy and achieved complete metabolic response to the therapy 10 months ago. Series follow-up FDG PET/CT scans have been negative for lymphoma. Current FDG PET/CT scan showed a new cluster of subcentimeter left axillary lymphadenopathy with avid FDG uptake. There was also focal FDG uptake in the left upper arm deltoid muscle and adjacent subcutaneous soft tissue, with no other abnormal FDG-avid lesion or suspicious CT image findings. The medical history revealed that the patient received COVID-19 mRNA vaccine

Visceral adipose tissue glucose uptake is linked to prognosis in multiple myeloma patients: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The use of computerized tomography to opportunistically assess body composition has highlighted abnormalities such as low muscle mass and high adiposity may be hidden conditions in cancer patients. However, the role of skeletal muscle (SM), subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue glucose uptake measured by 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-CT on patient prognostication is unclear. METHODS: Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) with satisfactory image frame for assessing body composition and for semi-quantification of SM, SAT and

Positron emission tomography and single photon emission computed tomography imaging of tertiary lymphoid structures during the development of lupus nephritis.

Lymphoid neogenesis occurs in tissues targeted by chronic inflammatory processes, such as infection and autoimmunity. In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), such structures develop within the kidneys of lupus-prone mice ((NZBXNZW)F1) and are observed in kidney biopsies taken from SLE patients with lupus nephritis (LN). The purpose of this prospective longitudinal animal study was to detect early kidney changes and tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS) using in vivo imaging. Positron emission tomography (PET) by tail vein injection of 18-F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG)(PET/FDG) combined with

Diagnostic value of baseline 18FDG PET/CT skeletal textural features in follicular lymphoma.

At present, 18F-fluorodesoxyglucose (18FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) cannot be used to omit a bone marrow biopsy (BMB) among initial staging procedures in follicular lymphoma (FL). The additional diagnostic value of skeletal textural features on baseline 18FDG-PET/CT in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients has given promising results. The aim of this study is to evaluate the value of 18FDG-PET/CT radiomics for the diagnosis of bone marrow involvement (BMI) in FL patients. This retrospective bicentric study enrolled newly diagnosed FL patients addres

Hypermetabolic abdominal and cervical lymph nodes mimicking Hodgkin lymphoma relapse on FDG PET/CT after adenovirus-vectored COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccine-associated hypermetabolic lymphadenopathy (VAHL) has been reported as a common post-vaccination side effect, especially with mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines. Most VAHL cases present normal or enlarged regional lymph nodes close to the injection site, usually with mild-moderate FDG (18 F-Fluorodeoxyglucose) uptake on FDG positron emission tomography (PET)/CT. Here, we describe the case of a 33-year-old woman with past history of Classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (CHL) who underwent follow-up FDG PET/CT 3 days (d) after the first dose of the adenovirus-vectored Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
