We present a case report of a man who had an abscess-like lesion on his left foot. The lesion discharged pus, enlarged, and became thicker, so that we could not differentiate the real toes from the out-growths. Moraxella phenylpyruvica and Pseudomonas putrefaciens were identified; direct agglutination tests were postive M. phyenylpyruvica. He was given antibiotics and antituberculosis therapy and had topical treatments. The foul odor disappeared with treatment, and the lesions were removed surgically 3 months later. The M. phenylpyruvica finally disappeared after the surgery. The final conditi…

The effect of rhythmic passive flexion of the foot on femoral vein blood volume flow rate has been investigated in 11 patients undergoing surgery for varicose veins. With rates of flexion varying from 24 to 50 per minute and with amplitudes varying from 20 degrees to 50 degrees it has been shown that the peak femoral vein flow can be increased to twice its normal value and that its pulsatility can be increased elevenfold. These increases are proportional to both the rate and the amplitude of the flexion, the maximum occurring, theoretically, when the foot is flexed +/-28 degrees about a line p…

OBJECTIVE: This methodological study was conducted to evaluate the Turkish validity and reliability of the "Instrument of Self-care for Prevention of Diabetic Foot" developed by Herrera-Guerra and Bautista-Arellano.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research is of methodological type. The study was conducted with 202 diabetic individuals followed up at a university hospital in Türkiye. Translation-back translation was used to assess linguistic validity, and the opinions of 11 experts were consulted for content validity. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied to assess construct validity, an…

OBJECTIVES: To explore the emotional consequences of diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs) and examine the psychosocial factors that influence their progression, management and self care behaviours.
METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's six-stage framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, and reported in accordance with PRISMA-ScR standards. Studies were eligible if they examined emotional or psychosocial experiences of adults living with DFUs.
RESULTS: Forty-nine studies were included: 28 cross sectional, 13 qualitative, 5 prospective, 2…

Non-healing diabetic foot ulcers substantially increase the risk of infection and lower limb amputation, contributing to elevated morbidity and mortality among individuals with diabetes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been widely studied as potential early biomarkers for various diseases. This pilot study assessed circulating miRNA expression profiles in adults with diabetic ulcers (n = 31), individuals who underwent limb amputation due to foot ulcers (n = 20), and 50 control subjects using RT-qPCR. Patients with diabetic foot ulcers and amputations exhibited significantly higher plasma levels of miR…

The Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is a highly contagious pathogen affecting cloven-hoofed animals. Its major structural protein, VP1, serves as a core target that governs viral pathogenicity and the host immune response. The distinctive structure and functions of VP1 are therefore crucial for developing vaccines and effective control strategies. This review systematically examines the multifaceted roles of VP1 in the FMDV life cycle, encompassing RGD motif-mediated viral adsorption, epitope-driven immunomodulation, and mechanisms underlying viral replication and immune evasion. Drawing o…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological profile of births of children with congenital foot abnormalities and their associated factors within the Unified Health System (SUS).
METHODS: This study adopts a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional approach, using secondary data from the Live Birth Information System (SINASC), provided by the SUS Department of Informatics (DATASUS). Data from the years 2014 to 2022, related to the State of Bahia, were analyzed. Births with congenital foot malformations were identified through specific ICD-10 codes designating the main diagnosis.

This study aimed to analyse the microbiome of chronic infected diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) using parallel methods: traditional culture (the culturome), 16S rRNA gene sequencing (the microbiome) as well as the Antibiotic Resistance Gene (ARG) profile of isolated strains. Swab samples were collected in parallel from affected ulcers. The microbiome sequencing results identified that all patients had a polymicrobial flora with the five most frequent genus level OTUs as Escherichia, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas and the anaerobe Anaerococcus. Microbiological culture from the same swabs…

Magnetic resonance imaging is a vital tool in sports medicine for evaluating ankle and foot injuries in athletes, offering detailed insights into bone, cartilage, ligament, and tendon pathology. However, the findings in athletes, especially those who are asymptomatic, can present pitfalls that may lead to misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment. Common findings such as bone marrow edema, joint effusions, and tendon sheath fluid are frequently observed in athletes without symptoms and may represent physiologic adaptations rather than pathology. This article emphasizes the importance of correlatin…

BACKGROUND: There is growing research evidence related to musculoskeletal and sports podiatry published by Australian researchers. This short report presents data from the musculoskeletal and sports podiatry stream of a national bibliometric review which aimed to map all Australian podiatry-related research from 1970 to 2024.
METHODS: A systematic search of the literature was conducted via Scopus until December 2024. Studies were screened for eligibility using Covidence. Study meta-data was analysed using Biblioshiny to describe publications volume, authors, institutions, journals, and resear

INTRODUCTIONS: Foot and ankle arthritis (FAA) in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients is an under-recognized clinical problem. Patients may have FAA in a disease remission state as most of the disease severity calculation consider 28 joints excluding FAA. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of FAA, and to determine its correlation with disease activity and other clinical variables.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2022 to 2023 among 201 RA patients, meeting 2010 ACR/EULAR criteria. Clinical assessment, joint examination (including foot and ankle), laboratory paramete…

The objective of this paper is to compare outcomes for patients treated with healthcare administered Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (H-OPAT) versus S-OPAT (self-administered antibiotics) for the treatment of foot osteomyelitis. This was a retrospective cohort study of 202 subjects with osteomyelitis that were admitted to the hospital for moderate or severe foot infections and followed for 1 year. There were 134 subjects in the H-OPAT group and 68 in the S-OPAT group. Diabetes was prevalent in 157/202 (77.7%) subjects in the study cohort. The primary outcomes were reinfection, woun…

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is one of the most frequent diabetes-related complications requiring hospitalisation and is a major contributor to lower-extremity amputation. Infrared thermography has emerged as a non-invasive diagnostic tool capable of detecting temperature changes associated with inflammatory and infectious processes. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the role of thermography in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic foot infection.
METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was followed. Risk of bia…

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to examine the potential benefits of plantar foot temperature monitoring in adults (18 years or older) with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus without active ulcers at baseline.
INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot ulcers represent a major complication of diabetes mellitus, leading to significant morbidity, risk of amputation, and health care costs. Early detection of inflammatory changes through temperature monitoring may provide an effective strategy for prevention.
