UNLABELLED: One of the most common causes of radiculopathy requiring neurosurgical treatment is a herniated disc. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is still the main diagnostic approach for this lesion. However, MRI does not allow assessing the functional state of the root. Neurophysiological examination assesses the function of peripheral nervous system. These methods are used for differential diagnosis of causes of neurological symptoms and determine the level of the nerve root injury.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of electromyography including paraspinal muscle mapping in diagnosis of radic

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia is common in the older adult, but the cause and mechanism remain unclear. Focal brain lesions allow for causal links between the lesion location and resulting symptoms, and we based on the reported TGA-causing lesions and used lesion network mapping to explore the causal neuroanatomical substrate of TGA.
METHODS: Fifty-one cases of transient global amnesias with DWI lesions from the literature were identified, and clinical data were extracted and analyzed. Next, we mapped each lesion volume onto a reference brain and computed the network of regions functio

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis 1 is a systemic pathology that predominantly affects the central and peripheral nervous system and the skin, although it can potentially affect any organ of the human body. The NF1 gene (Neurofibromatosis 1) is located on chromosome 17q11.2, a gene of great length that encodes neurofibromin, a protein with a tumor suppressor function with a functional mechanism that is not clearly known.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records, radiologic images, genetic studies, and clinical photographs of a patient with confirmed diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis 1 who was attend

The categorical approach to defining schizophrenia spectrum disorders requires meeting established criteria. To advance early identification and intervention in young people, the field has progressed to studying help-seeking individuals who are at clinical high risk based on subthreshold psychosis spectrum symptoms, and criteria have been articulated for qualifying individuals as at risk. A broader dimensional examination of psychosis has been applied to population-based studies on non-help seekers. This review highlights the ascertainment and assessment approaches to such population-based stu

F-box and leucine-rich repeat protein 4 (FBXL4) is a mitochondrial protein whose exact function is not yet known. However, cellular studies have suggested that it plays significant roles in mitochondrial bioenergetics, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) maintenance, and mitochondrial dynamics. Biallelic pathogenic variants in FBXL4 are associated with an encephalopathic mtDNA maintenance defect syndrome that is a multisystem disease characterized by lactic acidemia, developmental delay, and hypotonia. Other features are feeding difficulties, growth failure, microcephaly, hyperammonemia, seizures, hyper

The identification of biological and pathophysiological processes implicated in different forms of dementia is itself dependent on reliable descriptions of cognitive performance and capacities. However, traditional instruments are often unable to detect subtle declines in cognitive functions due to natural variation at the time of testing. Mobile technologies permit the repeated assessment of cognitive functions and may thereby provide more reliable descriptions of early cognitive difficulties that are inaccessible to clinic or hospital-based instruments. This assessment strategy is also able

The lengthened survival of patients with tumours of the posterior fossa has brought awareness of the neurocognitive deficits present in this patient population. In the past, these deficits were thought to be caused by radiotherapy damaging supratentorial structures known to be responsible for cognitive processing. This notion led to the development of new treatment protocols to restrict damage to supratentorial regions by decreasing the radiation dose and the irradiated volume. However, these treatment protocols have only resulted in marginal improvements, sometimes at the expense of long-term

Behavioural findings indicate that the core executive functions of inhibition and working memory are closely linked, and neuroimaging studies indicate overlap between their neural correlates. There has not, however, been a comprehensive study, including several inhibition tasks and several working memory tasks, performed by the same subjects. In the present study, 11 healthy adult subjects completed separate blocks of 3 inhibition tasks (a stop task, a go/no-go task and a flanker task), and 2 working memory tasks (one spatial and one verbal). Activation common to all 5 tasks was identified in

Developmental dyslexia is the most common learning disability in school-aged children with an estimated incidence of five to ten percent. The cause and pathophysiological substrate of this developmental disorder is unclear. Recently, a possible involvement of the cerebellum in the pathogenesis of dyslexia has been postulated. In this study, 15 dyslexic children and 7 age-matched control subjects were investigated by means of functional neuroimaging (fMRI) using a noun-verb association paradigm. Comparison of activation patterns between dyslexic and control subjects revealed distinct and signif…

BACKGROUND: Pelizaeus-Merzbacher-like disease (PMLD) is an inherited hypomyelinating leukoencephalopathy with onset in early infancy. Like Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD), PMLD is characterized clinically by nystagmus, cerebellar ataxia, and spasticity, due to a permanent lack of myelin deposition in the brain. Mutations in the GJA12 gene, encoding connexin 47 (Cx47), were recently reported in five children with autosomal recessive PMLD.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of mutations in the GJA12 gene in, and define the clinical and neuroimaging features of, autosomal recessive PMLD.

The increasing availability of PET imaging in nuclear medicine expands the armamentarium of clinical and research tools for improving diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Nonetheless, the role of SPECT imaging remains critical to both research and clinical practice. The development of rational strategies for guiding the selection of imaging modalities flows from primarily the nature of the clinical or research question and the availability of appropriate radiopharmaceuticals. There has been extensive SPECT and PET work in Parkinson's disease (PD) which highlights the value of

One of the most influential views on the hippocampal function suggests that this brain region is critically involved in relational memory processing, that is, binding converging inputs to mediate the representation of relationships among the constituents of episodes. It has been proposed that this binding is automatic and obligatory during learning and remembering In addition, neuroimaging studies have highlighted the importance of the prefrontal cortex, in learning, memory, and language processing. However, the posited importance of hippocampal-prefrontal interaction remains to be empirically

Dementia and its associated diseases are important causes of disability and morbidity in developed countries, especially in the aged population. As the babyboomers arrive at retirement and individuals over 100 are one of the fastest growing segments of our nation's population, we may realize the substantial cost these diseases bring to society. Dementia is characterized by a significant loss of cognitive function and should be clinically distinguished from an acute delirium or decreased arousal. Its manifestations cause anguish to millions of caregivers and family members, who are pressed to c

The clinicopathologic features of seven paediatric patients with pituitary adenomas (2 male, 5 female; mean age 14.3 years) were reviewed. There were three non-functioning adenomas, three prolactinomas, and one growth hormone producing adenoma. Five patients presented with visual field deficits, and six patients had endocrine symptoms, which included menstrual irregularities in all female patients, pubertal delay in two females, and growth delay and gigantism in one case each. On neuroimaging studies, five adenomas showed parasellar extension, while the remaining two prolactinomas were intrase

Williams syndrome (WMS), a genetic condition resulting from a contiguous deletion on the long arm of chromosome 7, is associated with a relatively consistent profile of neurocognitive and neurobehavioral features. The distinctiveness and regularity of the profile of learning and behavioral characteristics in this genetic condition suggests that underlying neurobiological correlates may be identifiable. In this initial study, we report findings derived from a high-resolution neuroimaging study of 14 young adult subjects with WMS and an individually matched normal control group. Compared to cont

Landau-Kleffner syndrome and related epilepsy-aphasia spectrum disorders are characterized by childhood-onset language regression, sleep-activated epileptiform activity, and frequently refractory seizures. This case report describe a boy with normal early development who developed progressive aphasia and non-motor seizures around age three, with electroencephalographic findings consistent with spike-wave activation during slow sleep, while neuroimaging and metabolic evaluations were normal. Standard antiseizure medications and repeated immunotherapy provided no sustained benefit. Genetic testi

We report the oldest female identified to date with a pathogenic NBEA variant who has been followed longitudinally. She presented with a complex, diagnostically inconclusive psychiatric phenotype extending in adulthood and a suspected mild neurodevelopmental impairment. The 64-year-old patient experienced recurrent episodes of mental state decompensation characterized predominantly by persecutory and health-related delusional ideation and anxiety. Her most recent psychiatric diagnosis was mixed conversion disorder. Although she never underwent formal cognitive testing, mild intellectual disabi

Auditory hallucinations are frequently linked to the onset of psychotic disorders, especially when accompanied by delusions or disorganized thinking. However, hallucinations may also arise from non-psychiatric causes. Hearing loss is often underrecognized as a contributing factor, since reduced auditory input can produce perceptual experiences that mimic psychosis. This case report presents a woman in her 50s with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who experienced persistent auditory hallucinations for more than 3 years. She maintained insight, normal daily functioning, and exhibited no othe

The amygdala is a medial temporal lobe (MTL) structure that processes emotionally significant information. It is strongly interconnected with other MTL regions, including the perirhinal cortex (PRh) which is a site of convergence for different types of sensory information, e.g., auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory and tactile. The amygdala and PRh have been shown to cooperate when processing emotional and sensory information via the amygdala modulating or facilitating sensory processing in the PRh. However, the two regions have also been shown to compete during some types of tasks, raising
