Staff views on overdose prevention in permanent supportive housing.

BACKGROUND: Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is the gold standard intervention for chronic homelessness, but PSH tenants face high risk for overdose due to a combination of individual and environmental risk factors. Little research has examined overdose prevention in PSH. METHODS: We conducted baseline surveys with staff from 20 New York PSH buildings participating in an overdose prevention technical assistance intervention study. PSH staff from participating buildings were invited via email to complete a brief online survey about their knowledge of overdose and perspectives on implementing

The challenges of caring for HDV-positive patients: a narrative medicine perspective.

Hepatitis D is considered the most severe form of viral hepatitis in humans, and chronic HDV hepatitis patients typically show a more rapid progression to cirrhosis and a higher mortality. While awareness of the disease has increased, it still remains underdiagnosed and of challenging treatment. Besides the physical toll that an HDV infection takes, the psychological impact needs to be considered when treating the infected patients. The aim of this work is to assess the psychological course of the disease from the patient's point of view and the clinicians tasked with the treatment of this spe

Malnutrition care in hospitalized pediatric inpatients: comparison of perceptions and experiences across two pediatric academic health sciences centres.

Malnutrition affects up to one in three Canadian children admitted to hospital. Awareness among pediatric healthcare providers (HCPs) of the prevalence and impacts of hospitalized malnutrition is critical for optimal management. The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of malnutrition among pediatric HCP across two major academic health sciences centres, and to determine how the use of a standardized pediatric nutritional screening tool at one institution affects responses. Between 2020 and 2022, 192 HCPs representing nursing, dietetics, medicine, and other allied health were sur

Crazy'App: A web survey on representations and attitudes toward mental disorders using video testimonies.

UNLABELLED: In the international context of efforts to combat the stigmatization of people with mental health problems, representations and attitudes about these illnesses have not to date been widely investigated in France. However, new technologies offer an unprecedented opportunity to collect such information on a large scale and to deploy more efficient action against stigma. OBJECTIVES: The Crazy'App survey was designed as an instrument for studying potentially stigmatizing representations and attitudes towards mental disorders. It asks respondents to react, rather than to standard diagn

Emergency Department Placement and Management of Indwelling Urinary Catheters in Older Adults: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practice.

UNLABELLED: Indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are placed frequently in older adults in the emergency department (ED). Though often a critical intervention, IUCs carry significant risks. Our objective was to examine current knowledge, attitudes, and practice of emergency nurses and other providers regarding IUC placement and management in older adults. METHODS: We surveyed ED providers at a large, urban, academic medical center. We developed questionnaires using items from previously validated instruments and questions created for this study. We also assessed providers' management of 25 uniq

A painful, never ending story: older women's experiences of living with an osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture.

UNLABELLED: Vertebral compression fractures (VCF) cause pain and decreased physical ability, with no known well-established treatment. The aim of this study was to illuminate the experience of living with a VCF. The results show that fear and concerns are a major part of daily life. The women's initial contact with health-care providers should focus on making them feel acknowledged by offering person-centered and tailored support. INTRODUCTION: In the past decade, osteoporotic-related fractures have become an increasingly common and costly public health problem worldwide. Vertebral compressio

Survey of HIV care providers on management of HIV serodiscordant couples - assessment of attitudes, knowledge, and practices.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) serodiscordant couples are at risk of sexual transmission of HIV between the infected and uninfected partner. We assessed New York area care providers for people living with HIV regarding attitudes, knowledge, and practice patterns toward fertility and conception in serodiscordant couples. Data were collected via a survey distributed in October 2013. Seventeen percent of respondents reported prescribing antiretroviral preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for a woman in a serodiscordant couple, and 38% percent of respondents reported having counseled serodiscordant

The DiReCT study - improving recruitment into clinical trials: a mixed methods study investigating the ethical acceptability, feasibility and recruitment yield of the cohort multiple randomised controlled trials design.

BACKGROUND: The 'cohort multiple Randomised Controlled Trial' (cmRCT) design has been proposed as a potential solution to poor recruitment into clinical trials. The design randomly selects participants eligible for experimental treatments from a pre-enrolled cohort of patients, recruiting participants to multiple trials from a single cohort. Controls remain unaware of their participation in specific trials. METHODS: We undertook a mixed methods study to determine the ethical acceptability, the proportion of patients in a routine service consenting to cohort participation, the proportion of th

College students' mental models for recognizing anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

Knowledge about eating disorders influences lay people's ability to recognize individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and refer them to professional treatment. We assessed mental models (stored knowledge) of AN and BN in 106 college students. Results indicated that most students have general, but not specific, information about AN and BN's symptoms, consequences, causes, duration, and cures. They also believe that people with eating disorders tend to be young, White women. These findings suggest that lay recognition of eating disorders may be based primarily on observat

Stability and change in sexual practices among first-year Australian university students (1990-1999).

A questionnaire on sexual attitudes and behavior was administered to first-year students at Macquarie University in Sydney every year from 1990 to 1999 (N = 4295 aged 18-19; 72.5% female). Responses to questions about experience of different sexual practices (tongue kissing, oral sex, and vaginal intercourse) with regular and casual partners were analyzed for trends. Over half of the students each year (on average 64% of the men, 57% of the women) had experience of oral sex or vaginal intercourse. More male than female students reported experience of each practice, especially with casual partn
