The prevalence of previous or current primary hyperparathyroidism in 704 patients (390 male) with proven diabetes mellitus was 0.99% (7 patients, all female). One patient was known to have both disorders when the study commenced and 6 were discovered from the past history or by screening for hypercalcaemia. Diabetes was diagnosed at age 12 years or later, hyperparathyroidism from 45 years. Two patients were insulin-dependent. We describe herein a case of parathyroid carcinoma accompanied with metastatic calcification identified by technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (Tc-99m MDP) scintigraphy in the lungs, kidneys and stomach. METHODS: Sections from multiple regions of the brain were examined with luxol fast blue and hematoxylineosin staining, and selected sections were stained with the silver impregnation technique (Bielschowsky technique) and Congo red. Strategies (both prophylactic and therapeutic) to reduce side effects of chemotherapy are reviewed. In particular, issues concerning proper patient information are discussed which should help to increase patient compliance. Chemotherapy, especially regimens with a curative intent, must normally be administered under the guidance of an oncologist. However, close cooperation with the general practitioner is essential in order to ensure high quality counselling and treatment of the outpatient.

Four hypercalcemic infantile renal tumors were shown to secrete glucagon-like peptides. These unusual tumors were histologically classified as rhabdoid tumors of the kidney (3 cases) and a cellular mesoblastic nephroma (1 case). Elevated G-29 and G-37 glucagon levels were detected in the plasma and tumor extracts as well as in the supernatants of cultured tumor explants. Three of these tumors were heterotransplanted into the nude mice and serially passaged from a mouse to another. The glucagon level decreased in the transplanted tumor extracts with the number of passage.

Thirteen muscle biopsy specimens (mainly the gluteus maximus) from 12 patients with laboratory confirmation of osteomalacia and proximal muscle weakness in 10 were examined by light and electron microscopy.
